jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 What do you guys think? He was a closer in college and he has posted a 12.95 K/9, 2.55 xFIP and 1.1 WAR this season. His walk rate is a bit high at 4.81 BB/9, though if he struggled with control in the first half and in the second half of the season his BB/9 rates have been in line with his career averages. I think Cecil has the stuff and makeup to be an elite closer. Look at some lefties like McGee and Doolittle this season. Even BJ Ryan made a successful transition from a 7th-8th guy to a closer. Screw Casey Janssen and Sergio Santos. Cecil for closer in 2015. Discuss...
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 He's the only good reliever under control next year anyway unless Sanchez is kept in the pen.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Maybe they'll sign someone. I wonder how much Robertson is going to get but he'd obviously be an ideal target. I can see the Red Sox going hard after him though.
immature Verified Member Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 This is the first year he used his curveball more than his fastball. Also his wfb was - 0.6 compared to last years 2.6. Could mean nothing, or could mean he is on the track on relying too much on one pitch. We don't need another Santos.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 Oh God, I could totally see a team overpaying for Robertson, hopefully that isn't us. Or I could see AA going after some veteran arms like a LaTroy Hawkins, or Jason Grilli for cheap, kind of like how he signed Francisco Cordero, Jon Rauch and Kevin Gregg a couple of years ago. Hopefully that's not the case though.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 Sergio Romo is an interesting target...his season in 2011 was amazing. Doubt he ever repeats that performance, though he'll provide solid K/9 rates and BB/9 rates. I'd rather go after Romo than pay a premium on David Robertson if I were a GM.
Vincent Verified Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Cecil as closer......... no. I'd rather use him in key situations not just automatically in closer situations. Sanchez for closer. /Thread
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I don't think he looks intimidating enough. Maybe if he grew a stache.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 He was the most intimidating closer...coming out to Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise blasting the speakers at the Rogers Centre! http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/711644/miguelbatistaheadshot.jpg
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Crain, Neshek, Gregerson, Hochevar, Fujikawa and Adams are all interesting to some degree.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 closer by committee I hate anointing someone the closer... just go with matchups and who has been pitching well

Gregerson is interesting, even as a setup man. I'd definitely take a chance on someone like Crain, Adams, Hochevar or Fujikawa for the 7th/8th inning - they shouldn't be that expensive.
comeon sense Verified Member Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 I also nominate Brandon Morrow. With a little work he could be great. 100 MPH fastball...90MPH slider etc.. He is just not cut out to be a starter-IMO.

I hope they try and do something like they did with McGowan a couple of years ago.

I really hope guys like that on small contracts are how they fill out the pen. As things stand, it's Cecil, Loup and maybe Sanchez. They're going to be adding multiple major league arms this offseason and I hope they don't invest heavily.

BTS Community Moderator Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Wade Davis? Don't see the Royals picking up that 7 mil option I don't think there's any chance they decline that option. One of Davis/Holland will be traded.

Relievers being volatile aside, Davis has been worth 2.8 WAR, dude has been downright filthy this year. He could easily be worth the 7 mill for one year.

Cecil, Loup, Redmond and Jenkins will be there next year. Drabek will get a shot but he has no options left so I can't see him making the team. I have a bad feeling Sanchez is headed to the pen. I see them signing one good pen arm. Hopefully more cause the pen was bad this year.
