http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/injured-cabrera-says-he-wants-to-stay-in-toronto/

Probably mentioned a number of times, I didn't see it posted, but he said last night he wants to say in Toronto. Who knows if they'll pony up the cash or what he might want to stay. If he wants to stay then maybe not as much money but with how this team handles FA he could ask for a cup of coffee and free dinner and they'd probably let him walk and make up some excuse.

next year is gonna be our year. we're gonna sign shields, martin, melky, trade for zobrist, and delabar and the pen are gonna become good again.

err my bad we're prolly gonna waste 10 mil on a 2 year deal for grilli and call it a day

Well if the numbers are right I hope they do, 3/35-39 million

That is the #,s I was thinking but Money talks and if you look at the free agents bats out there Melky will be in demand. Just turned 30 so a team may offer 4 years plus he gets off the turf. Turf screws us with free agents.

That seems about right. If push came to shove I'd begrudgingly give him a 4th year if that was required to keep him. He may up as a DH by then though.

It'll come down to what he's offered, wants and what some other team might offer. Maybe the injury drops it a little bit maybe not. Hopefully the Jays can use the remainder of the year and their exclusive window to negotiate something and get it done before other teams get their bids in. I'm sure AA puts an option year or two to kind of help the process or make up for some years.

It's funny how everyone wanted Melky gone after his 2013 season and now everyone wants him back after the season he had in 2014. I likely wouldn't go 4-5 years on Melky, since he's going to be on the wrong side of 30 and I'm not sure he'd hold up in the outfield in the latter part of the deal.

What else is he going to say? "I really f***ing hate canada and can't wait to leave" I don't really read anything into this. He most likely goes where the dollars are.

I would add a option year that would be vesting if he makes the all star team or has 600 abs

Exactly. Burnett said the same garbage a month before he signed with the Yankees.

Money talks, ******** walks.

A Frank Catalanotto/Reed Johnson platoon worked very well in 2005 and 2006 and costed the Jays hardly anything. Cabrera will likely cost + 12M AAV over 4-5 years. He's not a special, elite type player. You can easily replace his production and value much cheaper, though we need a smart front office that could realize that.

Take a long look at the FA class of OF this year. We are already platooning to fill all the other holes . CF, DH and 2b will likely need to be platoons. I don't give Melky more than 3 and some one probably gives 4 but it will be a hole.

As for not wanting him back , Who expected him to come back this good from serious back surgery. Tumor on the spine, gotta give Melky a lot of credit . maybe it wasn't as bad as it sounds but that was ugly s***

I'm uninterested in signing him to 4-5 year deal. 2 would be ideal and 3 can be discussed. But defensively he went from an average CF to a passable LF before age 28 I don't trust his body moving forward. He was in great shape this year but will he put that work in during a non contract year? No question he can hit but I don't see him hitting for the kind of power he hit for this year if not in great shape.

Offer QO and see what happens.

Completely agree. I'll take a one year 14 mil deal or the pick. A 4-5 year deal is crazy talk.

Isn't that a good thing. If he signs with the white sox for 4 years and 50 million, you wouldn't want the jays to match that. I say if he isn't gonna give a hometown discount then goodbye

Posted
Id go 3/45 but not any higher. Offer the QO and use some money to find a legit 2nd baseman. LF isn't the hardest position to fill and you can usually get a 2 Win player pretty cheap there. Any chance Headley would sign here? Haven't really head much about him returning to NY

Cabrera isn't going to the Yankees, especially with the Yankees having more significant needs at SS, SP and at closer, as David Robertson is due a massive raise via free agency. Besides, the Yankees already have Gardner/Ellsbury/Beltran.

Everyone's talking like the jays are World Series contenders and have managed their payroll so intelligently that we're afraid of getting fleeced by melky by paying him 16/yr.

Guys, there arnt too many options out there in the market, who else can you get for that price that will be an improvement over melky?

For a team paying Half of oakland's payroll on Reyes and MB alone, and constantly pay $10mill+ on pitchers that are riding the pine, why are people talking like we're too good to pay melky?

Stop debating, you only need three words to this question:

Bring him home.

Depends on the Yanks budget and A-Rod. They already have $180M (with benefits) committed to the 2015 roster, and may not be able to significantly raise payroll if the team fails to make the postseason. Keep in mind the Yankees have bond payments on the stadium to worry about, and lost revenues due to no postseason and declining attendance/TV ratings make it increasingly difficult to justify $200M+ payrolls along with huge luxury tax payments.

Is there any way the Yankees will actually have Arod on the roster next year? Without roids he is probably a replacement player. Yankees really just need to buy him out as there would so much of a distraction if he is on the team.

Yanks don't have a choice, especially with $64M left on that contract next season. No payroll relief is coming until 2017, when Tex, Sabathia, Beltran and Prado come off the books.

On Roundtable last night they were saying his stats up to 30 years old are similar to Darin Erstad and Mark Kotsay. Both players after 30 their game started to fall off. They also said where Melky is big name outfielder in a thin free agent market some team a player away could spring for 5-75m. Way they talked he is all but done in Toronto

The Yanks owe $1.34B in debt on their bond payments for the stadium, and they are under pressure by bond rating agencies to contend. Multiple seasons of no playoffs and increasingly inflated payrolls, along with declining attendance could affect their ability to pay it off. That's why it may be difficult to continue sustaining these payrolls.

Their outlook was cut by Moody's back last November.

But Toronto holds the cards, because of the QO that will be put on him.. it is uncertain if anyone will want to give a draft pick for a player like this, even at $15M.

And it's US media.. what do you expect?

Chris Denorfia is a FA this offseason and he'd be a decent guy to bring aboard for some OF depth. Utilize him in the right situations, he could provide great value. Nick Markakis could also be a FA, and would be an intriguing guy that I'd love to bring aboard. I doubt the Orioles pick up his option.

There's also the trade market as one poster alluded to before. Even bringing in someone like Seth Smith to platoon with someone wouldn't be all that bad.

SS Reyes

LF Smith/Denorfia

RF Bautista

1B Encarncion

DH Lind

3B Lawrie

2B ????

C Navarro

CF Gose

BN Valencia (platoons with Lind)

BN Izturis/Kawasaki

BN Thole

Trade for Ben Zobrist to play second base and occasionally other positions when needed (likely Rays pick up his option).

I'd rather do a platoon of Smith/Denorfia or bring in Markakis as a FA along with Denorfia than sign Melky to a 4-5 year deal.

Seth Smith signed a contract extension with San Diego. I have my eye on a guy like Norichika Aoki. I don't think he will cost to much and hits lefty pitching really well.

Yeah I know about the Smith extension, though do you think San Diego would consider trading him? He's going to be 33, a platoon bad and really doesn't fit into their long term plans. I like Aoki as well.

It goes to show you that its not necessary to sign Melky as some people are making it out to be. You can easily replace him with the above suggestions/names we've thrown out at a fraction of the cost.

Pillar and Gose are going to be the outfield going forward and if that is the OF next spring cue the rebuild.

Exactly. Players like Melky who's value comes purely in his bat tend to get overpaid. You can find 2-3 wins in LF more efficiently. I'm more then happy to take the draft pick and move on.
