jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Author Posted September 2, 2014 As for why Delabar didn't get a callup, it may be due to his continued control issues in AAA (5.9 BB/9IP), and he's a non-tender candidate(if he has 3 years of service time)
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Tough question to answer.. but he has little to prove in the minors, and considering he's already in AAA with dominating numbers, why not give him a chance? Waiting to add him would be OK if he were in A+/AA, but his strong numbers would've likely had him get called up sometime in 2015 anyway. I disagree that he has nothing to prove in the minors, dude has thrown 40 innings at AA or higher. He lacks strikeout stuff doesn't walk a lot of guys and generates a ton of ground balls... In the minors. Seeing how that translates against big league hitters is huge, especially without strikeout stuff.

I think he's got plenty to prove. Even so, he didn't need to be added to the 40-man for a while and is hardly a sure thing. It's not like he's an elite prospect, not to take anything away from him. Anyway, what's done is done.

Of course, considering the rotation for next year, he'll likely be in AAA as rotation depth anyway, or in the bullpen, depending on what he does in September and in Spring Training next season.

And that's why bringing him up now is puzzling. Why add him to the 40 man now, which means if he is projected as SP depth in AAA next year, you burn an option year next year if you dont have to? I'm thinking it means they want to get a look and see if he can be a legit 5th starter, which means Happ could be dealt.

I can see Buehrle being dealt because of his expiring contract after 2015, especially if the Jays kick in some money.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I would of like the team to maybe sell high on Graveman in the offseason similar to Nestor Molina. I think he is going to get exposed in the big leagues . Don't understand the move since he didn't have to be on the 40 man. I am scared for this offseason. If AA picks up Mcgowan's option and non tenders Delabar I will not be thrilled.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Surprised Drabek isn't given a chance to see if he's an option for the pen next year. Also, I wonder if Nolin will be given more then one inning to show his stuff. With these call ups I guess I might have to start watching again, f***in jays always pull me back.
torontofan Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 I don't see how both Sanchez and Norris can be on the rotation with innings limits that would be in the 160-170 range if the Jays FO are still expecting to be contending. They could probably get away with 1 of them and skipping the odd start to try and keep the innings down, but wasting them in a pen role when they need to be building innings would be hilariously stupid. The Cardinals do this with just about every pitching prospect before they have the opportunity to start with the team and it works out well for them.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Why stop watching, don't you like baseball? Love baseball, watched a lot of s***** blue jays baseball for the last twenty years...but the last 2 years are breaking me. I only managed to miss about 1 weeks worth of games though...and I'll be back watching tomorrow.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Getting rid of Delabar would be dumb. on one hand I understand what you are saying as he was good for us. But on the other hand, I can't stand keeping relievers on the 40 man who aren't in the majors. It's been one of my biggest pet peeves of AA's. So if the Jays don't think Delabar can get it back enough to start in the majors...sorry he should be gone. Why wait until March to dump him?

Shelby Miller did it in September after putting in 140 innings in the minors. He was starting the next year. Wacha was in the pen for 6 games only as well. Carlos Martinez ended up back in the minors to try and build up his strength to start, and he's struggled to last more than 5 innings a start. Rosenthal never made it out of the pen. The only recent guy I can think of that made a nice transition from a full year of being a late innings guy to starter is Chris Sale. The longer anyone is in the pen...the tougher it will be to get them back to starter.

kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Pompey I can see but Norris and Graveman is blind stupidity. The only reason I can see for this is the rebuild is coming . Not that that would be a bad thing.

I think getting called up in Sept or starting the year in the BP for a month isn't a bad way to transition. I thought the cardinals had better success doing it actually, they have done it with Wainwright, Lynn, and Kelly.
