Add to that the first round pick cost and the budget contraints and this just makes no sense.

After AA does nothing this off season he will need a fall back we tried position. Martin will be one of those fallback players. Jays will offer him something, of this I am sure but it will be the second best deal. what better way to get the rumor out there than use your own media arm lacky
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 I still see AA,s plan as improving the defense, adding team speed and building a better bull pen. While Martin would fit the better defense plan his cost in a prospect plus huge dollars just doesn't fit. I'm sure he didn't see Smoak and Dirks falling into his lap but that still leaves only 19 or so mil to spend and 8 rosters spots to fill. I also think AA discussed all major free agents like this board has and like this board discarded them because of costs.
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Giving up a draft pick won't hurt the Jays as they'll get one back when Cabrera walks.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 So could we do a trade even though he has been qualified and gain the week to talk to him and his agent and sign him? Say Dickey and his platoon partner, Melkey to balance out draft picks in case neither player signs with thier new teams. And we get Martin and tony Watson Can such a deal be done? Does anybody know the answer?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Giving up a draft pick won't hurt the Jays as they'll get one back when Cabrera walks. We'd be giving up a better one than we'd be getting... But Martin might (probably, but not 100%) be worth it.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 What would it take to get Valbuena from the Cubs? He seems like a good fit, but not sure how the Jays and Cubs line up in terms of need. On that second thought, I don't want AA trading with those guys. Nevermind.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 With my Romero money deferment to Martin. We could non tender Estrada and Mayberry as well as trade Happ and then free up enough money to go for Asdrubel Cabrera ~$50 million over 4 years to play 2B and backup at SS as well as offer $33 million for 3 years to Aoki. Doing this would drastically improve the teams defense by shoring it up behind the plate, at 2B and in LF. It would also arguably allow us to carry Gose as the teams CF full time for his defense and speed alone since the lineup from 1-8 would be pretty well balanced. C: Martin 1B: Smoak 2B: Cabrera 3B: Lawrie SS: Reyes LF: Aoki CF: Gose RF: Bautista DH: Encarnacion All average to excellent defenders with Reyes being the exception. It would also allow Sanchez to slot into the rotation for Happ’s spot as well as leaves us future flexibility with Buerhle’s $19 million coming off the books to handle re-signings and future additions. This plan would leave us at $138 million with room for some minor tweaks to add another free agent pen arm or two. Rotation would then consist of P/Dickey P/Stroman P/Buerhle P/Hutchison P/Sanchez With Nolin, Redmond, Jenkins, Graveman available as depth. Why do you want to give Aoki 33mill? He's not very good.

I wonder if we could see the Jays trade Buehrle and add multiple free agents that cost picks, then go nuts in the IFA market next year instead?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Why do you want to give Aoki 33mill? He's not very good. That seems like a LOT of money for Aoki... I don't see that on the table from anyone else.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 That seems like a LOT of money for Aoki... I don't see that on the table from anyone else. With Dirks , Mayberry, Gose, Pillar, and Pompey on the roster I don't see a need for spending that kind of money on Aoki when the existing holes at 2nd and bull pen are pretty glaring . I still see CF as Pompey,s job to lose . Think of the hype AA can create if he wins the CF job in ST which he could easily do. Thing is everything changes if they resign Melky .
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Unless you offer a top prospect, what motivation do they have to part with a 1st round pick? They would still get one if Melky walks, balances out does it not?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 So once you have been you receive a Q.O you can not sign a long term deal or be traded? Think you are missing the point. Is there a rule that doesn't allow such a transaction to be made? I they are both going to be free agents! Thanks tips! Lol
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 So once you have been you receive a Q.O you can not sign a long term deal or be traded? Think you are missing the point. How can you trade a contract when there isn't one?
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Fallback trade target - Luis Valbuena. 2 years of control left Projected by MLBTR to make 3.1M in arbitration this year 2.7 fWAR in 2014 Projected for 2.4 fWAR in 2015 In his physical prime Plays 2B and 3B with varying competency Infield in Chicago is absolutely clogged with Bryant/Baez/Russell/Castro. Alcantara is an infielder by trade too. And Olt can backup 3B with pinch hitting pop. Cubs could conceivably compete with more pitching. Proposal - JA Happ straight up for Luis Valbuena.

Cubs will actually save their trade assets, and use free agency to bulk up their pitching for the most part. How it should be done.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Steamer says that Valbuena is about as good a 3B option as Prado or Aramis. I feel like the market wouldn't value him as even close to being in the same tier as those guys though. By market value he would be closer to bench / UTIL rates... I think.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 TheHurl's been saying he'll be a Jay for sometime now. I could see it. well if thehurl thought it was a good idea then it'll never happen and I should be ashamed.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Do you really want AA trading with Epstein/Hoyer? Valbuena would be a great fit but knowing the Cubs they will get Sanchez and Pompey in return.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Do you really want AA trading with Epstein/Hoyer? KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 They can want whatever they want... There isn't a GM in the game dumb enough to make that trade. I think his point is that the Cubs established a pattern of holding out for the best offer with the way they handled the Samaridzija trade. It might not be possible to obtain Valbuena from them without overpaying.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Happ comes with more than double the salary and one less year of control, and LV is projected to put up better WAR. Not to mention positional scarcity in the FA market favors low end pitchers like Happ over above average/average infielders. I think you could eat half of Happs salary and they probably still don't bite. Toronto "wins" on paper, sure, but the fact is that most MLB trades have one side winning paper due to the simple fact that there are a finite number of players, sellers, and buyers - and thus a finite number of options available to teams. Ideal trades where the scales line up perfectly are incredibly rare.
Gorlak Verified Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 I assume this means he will give out low ball offers before other teams give out their competitive offers.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 They're not just gonna lead the league in waiver claims... they'll f***ing LAP the league! Waiver claims yeah!

I have had no problem with any of AA,s waiver claims so far this year. The Hendricks deal pissed me off because he eats a roster spot but really the 40 man has some room .
