Young didn't "hypothetically shut down" the Jays.

 

But he sure did actually shut them down.

 

In terms of what he can control and his own skill, he sure as heck didn't "shut down" the Blue Jays.

This is a ridiculous way to look at the term "shut down".

 

Btw, would you say Santos shut them down when he blew saves but had a low xFIP?

Agree that he should have got lit up. BUT HE DIDN'T. Agree he is due for some big time correction and only a matter of time.

 

But the fact remains, we had less than a base runner an inning against him and scored 1 run. He shut us down.

 

This isn't a stat argument as much as it is a language one. You don't seem to comprehend what shutting a team down is. You stated yourself that a no hitter that involved 27 straight hard hit outs is not shutting a team down. Thats right - you said a no hit shutout is not shutting a team down.

 

Think about what you are saying.

 

With regards to a pitcher, I only care about what he can control on the mound. If the guy is giving up a bunch of line drives that require his defense to make numerous run saving defensive plays, than that isn't called "shutting down" the opposition.

Too bad Kawa didn't get on, he was uncharacteristically impatient there that AB. Would've been bases juiced for JoJo Bats.
