Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 No, it's not. When you have a complete douchebag like Lackey, it's not even close to guaranteed. He retires and they're screwed. I doubt he retires, he begrudgingly plays and gets a new contract in 2016. Way too good
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Seems like Cherrington is the Anti-thopoulos, off first impressions we thought we was a dumnass GM when he was trading for guys like Hanrahan and Bailey, and he's been pretty frugal since then. The greek god of gyros has been the exact opposite. I agree, I thought he was the biggest moron after the 2012 offseason. Was penning Victorino's contract as the worst of the year at the time. But he's doing something right.

The greek god of gyros has been the exact opposite. That is true, odd how that worked. AA is the weakest GM in the A.L East

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Author Posted July 31, 2014 They get an extra year of minimum salary, how is not that not great value. Its guaranteed It's not guaranteed when he can just retire
Freeman50 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Nah, Craig isn't very good. Even though his career wRC+ is better than Justin Upton, Alex Gordon, and Cargo. I like the continuous "career numbers" reference from a guy who has declined every season... perhaps he doesn't take care of himself, doesn't train effectively, going to be the next Tim Lincecum
over500 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 If a player gets underpaid, "we have to re-negotiate" If he's overpaid, "tough luck" He signed a contract, live up to it.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 They should have put a clause in there that if he just retires he has to pay them a million or honor the contract
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I agree, I thought he was the biggest moron after the 2012 offseason. Was penning Victorino's contract as the worst of the year at the time. But he's doing something right. People tend to salivate a little too much over prospects at times (not that I want to lose any of ours mind you, I love them too). When GM's trade older guys for hyped prospects, everyone considers them genius. When they make a now move instead of perpetually rebuilding, they're idiots. We're seeing it this year with Beane (Jim Johnson anyone?). He's the same GM he was before, just in a different phase for the organization.

I know what you're saying, and I feel that way too. But players can retire at will at anytime, and as part of that they can give up their salary for that year. Lackey would say to the Cardinals "I'm going to sit out for the 2015 season and retire..unless you sign me for 3 years $25 million"
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 (edited) I like the continuous "career numbers" reference from a guy who has declined every season... perhaps he doesn't take care of himself, doesn't train effectively, going to be the next Tim Lincecum Don't think anyone saw how dramatically Lincecum would decline. A lot of people thought Hernandez would decline as well (looking at you Nox) cause his velocity went downhill, but for some reason, he's still a Cy Young contender. Of course you're trying to predict the fickle bitches that are pitchers. Completely different from position players. Edited July 31, 2014 by Captain Adama

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Or perhaps it's a typical down season that every player experiences. Did he just compare a pitcher losing substantial fastball velocity to a hitter having a bad year?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Did he just compare a pitcher losing substantial fastball velocity to a hitter having a bad year? Unfortunately.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Did he just compare a pitcher losing substantial fastball velocity to a hitter having a bad year? Also, "declining every year" = 134 wRC+ in 2013? Wow, what an awful hitter he is.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Also, "declining every year" = 134 wRC+ in 2013? Wow, what an awful hitter he is. Easy there I think you made your point. Trolls aside, rational thinking people assume its a down year
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Man, I thought Craig was a True Cardinal. I guess he forgot how to aim his line drives
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I like this deal for the Sox. Craig will be a great fit at Fenway. Great buy!
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I like Kemp, I just don't consider him a superstar at this point in time.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Red Sox have a good core offensively now heading into 2015 Pedroia, Holt, Ortiz, Napoli, Cespedes, Craig, Boegarts, Victorino, JBJ - not bad.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I like Kemp, I just don't consider him a superstar at this point in time. Kemp has been a monster these past two days!
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Kemp has been a monster these past two days! You bet. Hopefully it's a sign that the shoulder is getting back to normal.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Great offense? Allen Craig having a horrendous year and they are gonna be banking that it's an outlier. It's just a bunch of meh traded for meh and meh John Lackey is old but he's still a good pitcher.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 John Lackey is old but he's still a good pitcher. If what Rosenthal says is true and Lackey is honoring his contract, it's truly a great trade for the Cards.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 John Lackey is old but he's still a good pitcher. Lackey is putting together back-to-back years with an xFIP- under 90. Jon Lester is having his first such season since 2010.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Guess this explains why they were "stunned". At least John Lackey is a super likable fellow who will fit right in.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 These poor millionaires need to learn that they are in the middle of a business. It's not like they'll never see each other again.
Freeman50 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Or perhaps it's a typical down season that every player experiences. This is third season in a row he's dropped-off offensively, albeit the previous were less drastic it's still may be an indication of something.
