jays76 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 The thing is, it would cost BOTH for Price. And yes, we know what we'd get from Price, we also know we'd get 40 expensive starts and then he'd be gone. I'm not so sure, if we threw our farm minus Stro at them for Price I think they might bite. I could live with the outcome over the next 2yrs of chasing the title as opposed to having a team that was so close but didn't go for it when the window of opportunity was there.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Alternatively, and hopefully not, Price's arm could explode and Stroman could end up going on a multi season run of dominance. Pitchers, man. Hopefully yes, Price's arm exploding is icing on the cake.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 What about Sanchez, Norris, Pompey, Nolin, and Smoral for Price? Basically it amounts to this year and next of playoffs and going for it in the Bautista, EE, Reyes, Lind all in their prime window. Meh that kind of package is for guys like Jorge de la Rosa, too much for Price.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I actually like this deal for Oakland (and for us for that matter). I'd much prefer Cespedes going to the Sox for 1.5 years that they're unlikely to seriously compete during (and no QO) than an elite young player we'd be facing for the next decade going there. The A's have had a great offense all season, so they can likely take the hit of losing Cespedes. They basically turned a competitive balance pick + ~2.5 to 3 WAR (over a full season) Cespedes for 4 to 5 WAR Lester and probably 1 WAR Gomes. Just watch them go out and sign Rusney Castillo now to replace Cespedes.

DH12 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 They could save time and just award the WS championship to the A's now.
DH12 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 That's exactly where I'm at with the exception of trading Stro, I love his will to win and competitive spirit. We need him in this rotation for a magical run but as far as anyone on the farm goes they're all uncertainties for 2 years of trying to win a title! Price is a top of the game CY winning pitcher, I wish people would wake up!! We're in a pennant race here and this is the window, the time is now!!! Hitters like Bautista & Encarnacion don't come around that often and I'm tired of investing in tomorrow, this is their time. We have the team right in front of us we just need a serious piece to say a few years from now when looking back that we took a shot! If not then tear it all down and let's twiddle our thumbs for another half decade or longer.. Now that Oakland is head and shoulders better than any team now, it wouldn't be worth it to add any more players this year. It's Oakland's year
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Does this deal make it tougher for Deck McGuire to make a huge push for a starters job with A's?
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 This is mental. Cespedes?!?!?! Totally admire this deal both ways with 2 organizations who know exactly where they want to go. A's unequivocally going for it and Bosox knowing when to fold em and loading up. A's have enough pitching now to make their own deal to soften loss of Cespedes. This is exactly why 2014 is our best chance to get a sniff in the AL East and we have/are f***ing it up royally.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 wtf is the Beane thinking? Cespedes is a huge part of that team. really dumb trade. good luck winning the WS with that offense.

"That offense" has a 108 wRC+, and that's with Reddick having a down year and they just acquired Gomes who has hit well against lefties in his career.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 They have the best offense in the Majors, lol. Angels say hi
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 They have the best offense in the Majors, lol. not anymore they don't considering Cespedes is arguably their best hitter.. lol

JFD Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Josh Donaldson. WHAT? Moss? Crisp having a better year Cespedes is leading the team with 102 hits, 2nd in doubles, 3rd in HR's and RBI, 2nd in batting average for anyone with 400+ plate appearances. good luck Oakland.

BTS Community Moderator Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I don't really understand what he means by this, assuming "tomorrow" means beyond this season. This move really, really helps their 2014 run, but indisputably weakens them in 2015 and beyond.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I don't really understand what he means by this, assuming "tomorrow" means beyond this season. This move really, really helps their 2014 run, but indisputably weakens them in 2015 and beyond. I think he looks at the win distribution like: 2014.5: 1.5 (Lester RoS) 2015: 2.0 (Cespedes) 2016: 0 (Either will have left) So he could value current year at $7.5m per win and next year at $5.625m per win. Which would be break even on surplus value. He assumes Cespedes is leaving and notes that he's replaceable with a Gomes/Fuld platoon, which is greater than the difference of the pitcher Lester will be replacing versus Lester himself. So based on his win valuations of this year > next and the WOWYs, he figured it was worth it. That's just me trying to replicate the thought process, though. Idk.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 A's may also be trying to help their chances of getting a stadium built by their city by winning it all.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I wouldn't trade stroman for price straight up at this point. Guys are WAY ahead of themselves on Sanchez and Stro. Who doesn't love Stro and Sanchez so far, but very SMALL SAMPLE SIZE. Sanchez value might have been at an all time high yesterday - like a junior mining stock on a roll.

I wouldn't trade Stroman for Price right now because of the simple fact that Stroman is contributing currently. If you pull Stroman out of the starting five (instead of Happ) and replace him with Price you're not getting as much of an upgrade (obviously, still an upgrade simply based on the known v/ the unknown). Price makes sense if he doesn't cost someone who is currently contributing to the team.

Price would have cost a lot more in $ and talent given up in deal, but you would be banking on his track record to be worth 1-2 ish more wins which could be critical. And you are in playoffs you get a proven ace SP. Its a tough call to be sure. We erred on side of caution and future. Its all moot if Bosox and NYY come back like I think they will next year. Doesn't get any easier than this year for the Jays IMO.
