149 wRC+ in the minors this year, the guy is killing it. You'd think the least he can do is provide slightly above replacement production at the majors, which is more than we can say for several of our current guys.

Not only is he an upgrade as Adam Lind's platoon partner at DH, he's better than Glenn and Mastro on the roster. Just don't play him in the OF.

Solid years in 2009 and 2011 and was off to a hot start in 2012 before getting injured. As a platoon bat to hit against LHP, he's a great pickup.

Depending on how long EE is out for, though you could be correct he'll likely get playing time against RHP as well.

Reimold is not a platoon bat. He's a DH-type with some decent pop, passable plate discipline, and the ability to give you reps in the OF in a pinch (so that you don't end up with f***ing EE in LF -- whether completely irrational or not, I blame his sprints in LF as the reason for his f***ed up quad).

 

Put him in the lineup and let him loose. See if any of the minor league success translates.

 

Last year, he was abysmal at the majors with a 52 wRC+, but he had the same 52 wRC+ in Double-A as well. This year he's got a 149 wRC+ at Double-A in a similar sample, so you would think he's definitely improved somewhat. He's also looking a lot better in terms of plate discipline, something he has rarely ever shown, at any level.

If Reimold magically became healthy, the potential value he could contribute, along with the amount of potential Orioles schadenfreude to be had, could result in a very hilarious outcome. And if he doesn't get healthy, you lose absolutely nothing for it.

 

I agree AA needs to make a real deal (I'd take it further and say that he needs to make at least two "real deals"), but waiver wire moves like this are what often separates pretenders from contenders. Zero risk, huge possible rewards.

This is a fantastic move. He's even arbitration eligible next year. Sure everyone wants a stud bat, but this dramatically strengthens the bench, at least offensively.

Actually, pre-injury Reimold, as he was progressing through the higher levels of the minors, and into the majors, was a high OBP guy. Even when his quality of contact dipped in 2010 and 2011 (following his achilles issues and ankle surgery), when his BA went into the pooper, he was still posting high BB totals (minors/majors). It wasn't until he started really breaking down that it all fell apart.

 

The reason the DH platoon is mentioned is pretty obvious. He has obvious injury concerns, so keeping him off the field as much as possible is in a club's best interests if they want to see him healthy ... and that leaves DH. He's a RHB, and can often times hit LHP adequately (even if it's at the same level as he hits RHP). The Jays have a DH who can't hit LHP adequately.

 

So, perfect fit.

 

Now, with all the positional craziness with a weak bench and a possibly hobbled/DL'ed 1B, that confuses the issue as to who plays where and why ... but if Edwin can return, or if they can find another 1B option, Reimold and the Jays might be best served by letting him platoon with Lind at DH ... possibly using Reimold to give a corner OF a day off here and there, rather than just throwing him out there in the OF full-time and saying "don't break."

Yeah I see that side of it, and I know that that's probably how he's going to be used, but unless he's going to shatter his ankle jogging out to the OF, I think he'll get a not-insignificant amount of reps in the OF as well.

I think you're confusing yourself, and what I said.

 

First, I stated he was a plate discipline guy (pre-habitual injuries) ... when you had stated he has rarely shown that ability, at any level. Your statement isn't true.

 

Second, I stated Reimold makes perfect sense as a DH platoon bat, for the reasons given, when you're stating he shouldn't be platooned at DH. People were stating he makes sense as a DH platoon partner for Lind ... and you accused them of "spamming" the term platoon bat for suggesting he works there.

 

Third, I said it wasn't smart to put him in the OF as any more than a spot relief guy, when you want to run him out there until he breaks.

Regardless, you do realize the guy is just now attempting to return from his SECOND spinal fusion surgery, right? Not sure why you flippantly mention him shattering his ankle running out to the OF, as if it's not realistic that he's a severe re-injury risk and should be babied, when the guy has serious, serious chronic back issues. His injury concerns are a thing.
