Wtf was that? Just saw him wig out like a baby after Gose PH for him last night (banging his bat in front of Gibbons and then throwing it down the stairs). Does this kid actually think he's entitled to such behavior?? Thought he was way more respectable (and smart).

I'm thinking lesson learned here.

On the other hand, he was right. Gibby made a mistake there.

Yeah, didn't get the move but still.... kid ruining his own chances doing dumb s*** like that. Unless his tactic was to make the org want to trade him... then he might be a genius.

Pillar MiLB wRC+

2011 - ~139

2012 - ~122

2013 - ~126

2014 - ~138

MLB - ~51

The guy knows he was born with the talent to hit (A LA Kalfus), but he hasn't been able to do it in the majors. The poor performance in the bigs make him to act like a douchebag.

With pillar's numbers in the minors compared to gose's in the minors and with Colby back, why do we still have gose on the roster.

Hopefully you aren't asking that question next year.

Good theory, so he's frustrated

Pillar hasn't been given a long enough opportunity. He's a cerebral player makes adjustments over time. Gose makes Rajai look like Einstein.

That doesn't make any sense. Gose is not dumb, he's just a bad hitter.

Pillar has a 34 wRC+ on a .300 BABIP. I didn't even know that was possible.

He strikes out all the time, has yet to walk and has no power. Not exactly an appealing package.

Didn't realize his MiLB numbers were that good. He's clearly a better hitter than what were seeing and knows he's a better hitter than Gose.

that is probably more of the reason why he is in AAA than his power

He's Ichiro in the minors and Delmon Young in the MLB.

Toronto Blue Jays’ Kevin Pillar bounced back to Buffalo after dugout tantrum

John Lott | June 25, 2014 | Last Updated: Jun 25 5:53 PM ET

More from John Lott | @LottOnBaseball

TV footage showed him returning to the other end of the dugout, where Gibbons spoke to him briefly. During that conversation, Pillar turned and tossed his batting gloves away.

TORONTO – Kevin Pillar apparently hastened his departure from the Toronto Blue Jays by angrily throwing his bat into the tunnel leading to the clubhouse after he was pulled for a pinch-hitter Tuesday night.

“It didn’t help him at all,” manager John Gibbons said after Pillar was optioned to Buffalo. “This is a team game, you know. There’s no room for selfish play.”

Gibbons stopped short of citing Pillar’s behavior as the sole reason the Jays sent him back to Triple-A. In Pillar’s place, they called up Brad Glenn, a 27-year-old outfielder with no major-league experience who was batting .381 in 30 games for Buffalo.

Pillar, a right-handed batter, was due up with the bases loaded in the eighth inning of a 6-6 tie with the New York Yankees. Gibbons sent up Anthony Gose, a speedy left-handed batter, to face right-handed reliever Dellin Betances.

Pillar demoted a day after he tosses bat down dugout steps after being replaced

GREGORY STRONG / THE CANADIAN PRESS

JUNE 25, 2014 03:43 PM

TORONTO - Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar was sent down to triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday, a day after tossing his bat down the dugout stairs after being replaced during a game against the New York Yankees.

In Tuesday's 7-6 win over New York, Pillar was scheduled to bat in the eighth inning with the game tied and the bases loaded. He walked to the batter's box area as the Yankee infielders gathered on the mound with reliever Dellin Betances for a coaching visit.

However, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons decided that Anthony Gose would enter the game as a pinch-hitter and Pillar had to return to the dugout.

Once there, Pillar briefly chatted with Gibbons before walking to the other end of the dugout and casually tossing his bat down the steps. It wasn't an overly aggressive display, but it was rather unexpected.

Gibbons was asked whether it was a factor in his demotion.

"It didn't help him at all," he said. "This is a team game. There's no room for selfish play. But we've been thinking about (calling up Brad) Glenn for a while anyway."

Glenn, who has split the season between the Jays' double-A and triple-A affiliates, arrived in time for Wednesday's series finale against the Yankees. He has a .381 average with four homers and 22 RBIs in 30 games this season for the Bisons.

Pillar, who had just been recalled from Buffalo on Monday, was given a rare start in right field Tuesday with slugger Jose Bautista out of the lineup with a strained hamstring. Pillar went 0-for-3 on the night.

In the first of his two pre-game media availabilities, Gibbons was asked about Pillar's reaction but kept his reply pithy.

"He wasn't real happy, I know that," he said.

Gose ended up grounding into a forceout for the second out in the eighth and Munenori Kawasaki struck out to end the inning. The Blue Jays went on to score a run in the ninth for the walkoff win.

Pillar has played in 26 games for Toronto this year but his backup role has limited him to just 40 at-bats. He has driven in two runs and has a .225 average.

Gose got the start in right field Wednesday night with Glenn available if needed off the bench.

"We're looking for a little more sock from the right side," Gibbons said. "We've got three left-handed pitchers coming in from the (Chicago) White Sox (this week). Glenn's been on fire down (in Buffalo) as well so this is his opportunity."

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays also designated infielder Jonathan Diaz for assignment before the game.

like I said... Gibbons has to make sure he sends a clear message, especially when a fringe player does this sort of s***.

I'm pretty sure that Reyes was benched because he was lazy, but they didn't say it publicly. Reyes said openly that he wasn't tired. he only got into the game because jose got hurt.

Yeah, maybe. But in this particular year I care more about winning and less about "messages being sent".

it's easy for things to get out of hand on a team and they wont win if the clubhouse isn't kept in check. it can be a hard balance. didn't Gibbons have Shea in his last time around, as well as his dust up with Lily`? I'm sure he's running a tighter ship so it doesn't get back to that again.

If it was Lawrie,

"That's just the way he is. He has a fire, wants to play all the time. You like to see that in a player."

4 walks in 142 career ABs.

Guy was a 32nd round pick. He should be thankful that he has even been given a look.

They won't re-call him until September for this incident.
