G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 How do people feel about him this season? I'm curious. I think he's been better than expected. Quite a better than expected. and not just lucky, but legitimately good, better than the average 5th starter. Will it last? Don't know. He had a good 1/3 season last year before his injury than was never the same. But this has been a good run and I'm happy about it for sure. Thoughts?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 There's been so much Happ hate over the last 2 years. But I now find myself legitimately excited to watch his starts and see if he can carry the streak of decent starting pitching he has provided so far. Am I the only one who looks forward to his starts? LOL
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 5.00 FIP 4.58 xFIP Not sustainable. With that said, he's been fine as a #5. Ideally, he's in the pen as a swing man/spot starter (he'd likely go full-diva on us if that happened though).
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 He's sort of average so far. But guys like Happ are useful on a high run scoring team. He's pitching to about his career averages. So I think it could last. He's always had a high strike out rate so he could do a bit better.
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I'll go ahead and say he's been better than expected. I still have little confidence when he takes the bump, but he's been going much deeper into games which I give him credit for
shortstop Verified Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I've been wrong on Happ past 5-6 starts...ever since Kratz has become his catcher...he pitches 92-93mph so has decent velocity...if he can locate, he can get you to the 6th/7th and give the team a chance to win...a solid #5 if he keeps it up...we're all waiting for him to get back to old Happ so he's gotta keep showing the consistency
flafson Verified Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Clearly the extra zip on his fast ball helped. Last year he had a hard time putting guys away and this year even though he still has that problem, it's a little bit less noticeable because of the extra velocity.

For a #5 it's hard to complain. Getting deeper and hitting spots better. It ain't always pretty or perfect but he's done decent

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Samardzija please. Happ is poo. I'd rather Nolin. If we could pick up him or Shields I'd be thrilled. Hoping Stroman sticks and gives us mid rotation caliber performance. But if he falters, it hurts less if we have Shields or Shark in the rotation. Happ as swingman (which he likely becomes if we pick up a starter) is better than Hendriks or Redmond IYAM. So I'm happy with what Happ is doing but would NOT use it as an excuse to not try and upgrade.

I love our team but we are drinking kool-aid if we think this rotation is good enough for 162 gms and post season. Happ has been better than expected. I'm too lazy to do it but I suspect if we broke down 5th SP across MLB his numbers would be in the top 3rd. He has the gift of low expectations because I assume he will get shelled every start and he hasn't been. He is ok.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 http://www.reactiongifs.us/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/thumbs_down_gladiator.gif ....Happ says "et tu Brute?"
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 His success lately has been due to his increased usage of his fastball. When hitters/scouts start recognizing that, Happ will get destroyed. His fastball isn't all that special, and when you throw in his s***** command... Passable 5th starter.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Samardzija please. And who are you willing to give up?
bzapple Verified Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I'll wait until tomorrow to judge him, because tonight is definitely his most important start to date and will be looked back on for years to come.
kgm1 Verified Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I was one of his harshest critic calling him happless all off season and was pissed when we didn't keep him on rehab for the full 30 days. Facts are he has been a seviceable 5th starter and with Nolin hurt, Morrow on the DL, Hendriks being what we saw, and Mcgowan,s value obviously in the BP it is damn lucky for us AA kept him and had the faith. Not saying it will last but the depth he has added when we needed it was great. With Nolin back he hopefully can be effective IF we need him.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Samardzija please. Happ is poo. I'd rather Nolin. Samardzija will add a run and a half of ERA coming over to the AL East (heard it on PTS). I don't get the appeal. We have to look at AL starters.

I can't trust this organization to make the right decision between Stro and Happ, I would fully expect Stro moving to the pen

For a lot of people JA Happ doing good is in direct contradiction to how they felt about the trade to get him. They hated the trade..... so they hate him. Apparently trading 5 complete scrubs who you will never here of again for a serviceable major league pitcher is a bad thing. He does have quite the rat face though.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 http://www.reactiongifs.us/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/thumbs_down_gladiator.gif pretty funny.... That's also what I picture you looking like.

I hated him, and Izturis, before the season began because they seemed below middling, and we're taking up valuable roster spots logjamming other potential player options. Happ is 5-2 and has pitched really well. for a #5 guy, this is fantastic. He's looked really, really good. So, yeah, if we pick up another starting pitcher before the deadline, I'd rather not bump Happ unless he shits the bed. I'd rather we bump Dickey to be honest.

I've seen 96 mph a few times. That was nice.

He has a 4.58 xFIP, but he has a 5-2 record so he's pitching well!!1!!! pitchr winz1!!!! He's replacement level. Lolllll @ bumping Dickey
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 I lol'd I know Because Dickey's ERA went up 1.5 runs after his magical Cy Young season to the AL East while he was slightly injured, we should expect the same to happen to ALL NL starters. Pffft
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Through 43.67 IP he has 0 WAR. He's projected to have 0.3 WAR in his next 80 IP. Yayyyyyy!!! He's pitching really well for a 5 guy /s
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 5-2 oh god He could win 15 games this season "15 game winner" JA Happ will be quoted for years. When he's terrible in 2015 Buck and Tabby will wonder why... "What's the matter with Happ? HE WAS A 15 GAME WINNER LAST YEAR> OMG what is the matter" etc etc
