Spoonovic Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 AA gets a lot of criticism and most of it is deserved. But there is no doubt that he has made some good decisions. -Signing Bautista to one of the best deals in baseball. If he waited till the end of the 2011 season to extend Bautista instead of spring training, it would have probably cost the team another $50 million. -Signing EE to one of the best deals in baseball -Rasmus Trade -Santos trade (Molina is worse). -Getting rid of the Wells contract -Not extending a qualifying offer to Josh Johnson even though everyone wanted him to. -Trading for Yunel Escobar -Brett Wallace for Gose (Gose is a 4th OFer at worst right now while Wallace isn't a major league player) -Marcum for Lawrie AA used to trade rape other GMs.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Miguel Olivo for draft pick trade was neat It's pretty much been confirmed though by some insiders on here that AA had several of those deals fall into his lap. If those people want to confirm this then they can.
Convo Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Sending JPA packing was a wise decision. http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/086/0/4/captain_obvious_by_paratheses-d3cmwa3.jpg
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Getting that 2nd year for Melky's contract. Actually that worked out for both sides. Jays actually get something out of the deal, since the 1st year was crap due to tumor. Melky, had he signed a 1-year deal, wouldve been a free agent after spine surgery to remove a tumor. That doesnt exactly scream multi-year contract...and he probably wouldve ended up on a 1-year deal making less than the $8M now.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Little things this year and a year ago have helped. Since he got burned so bad with his pen of Frankie Francisco, Jon Rauch and Francisco Cordero (2012)... he has worked pretty hard to keep arms in triple A and at the big league level he can call on.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 He hasn't got much credit for it this year, but he's built a pretty good bench to. Francisco, tolesson, Kratz, pillar/Gose... Not bad.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Actually getting pieces of value for Halladay, after Doc had made it clear that he had no intention of staying in Toronto.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Yeah. He's definitely not the worst GM ever like some on here would make you believe.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Hiring EE as super scout and signing Francisco.

I like the Lawrie/Francisco/Tolleson platoon. I like the offense this year. You mention most of the big positive AA moves, Bautista and EE etc.. Those were good.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Optioning Hendriks to Buffalo to let Stroman stay a while

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I'm pretty sure the Francisco/Lawrie/Tolleson platoon is all Gibby I don't know, gotta give him credit for getting Francisco and Tolleson. And if you think this is all Gibby, you also have to think Goins is Gibby a big part since Seitzer is his buddy and they thought they could get him to hit better. Over all, what you can do is give them both credit for maximizing the roster they have put together. We'll see how it plays out.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I'm an AA defender. But he got lucky on two guys not being here. Maicer Izturis and Mark DeRosa not blocking guys from coming up from Buffalo, helps a lot.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I'm pretty sure the Francisco/Lawrie/Tolleson platoon is all Gibby I guess no one really knows the Beeston/AA/Gibby dynamics. Maybe it was Beeston's idea. Beeston - "So I was on Netflix and there was this movie "Moneyball", it's a few years old... it's about this guy Billy Beane... anyway it blew my mind so I got these books by this other guy Bill James. This Bill James guy is like from my generation, but he was all into numbers and s***. Anyway I've been up 72 hours straight reading this s***. NOBODY f***ING TOLD ME ABOUT THIS BEFORE?? I'M AN ACCOUNTANT FOR CHRIST SAKES!! I LOVE THIS KIND OF s***! NUMBERS!! NOBODY BOTHERED TO TELL ME?? THAT'S YOUR f***ING JOB FOLKS!! TELL ME THE s*** THAT'S GOING ON! Sorry for the rage, but you guys really should of told about this 25 years ago. Anyway all this stuff got me to thinkiing. This on base percentage is pretty important right?? And the platoons. Left handed hitters hit better against righties. And defense, the scouts over rate it at times. So what about this... Lawrie shifts to second against righties to let Francisco play?? What do you guys think?? Gibby??? AA??? Not a bad idea for a washed up accountant I say."
Jonzo Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Should we revive the All Hail AA thread? or was that the old board..

FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 AA is still a terrible GM. Just because his bad process has lucked out with some good results so far doesn't make up for all the bad decisions he's made, his lies to the fans, his complete inaction all last offseason, his phobia of advanced metrics, etc. He deserves props for dumping a couple bad contracts and the Bautista deal, that's it. AA doesn't even deserve praise for Encarnacion because he let him go to the A's and got lucky that Beane screwed up and got rid of him. And his three panic trades (Napoli trade, Marlins trade, Dickey trade) will haunt this franchise for a long time. In short, just because we have a winning record in June doesn't mean it's time to start sucking off AA. I'd still fire his ass today if it were up to me.
