McGowan demoted to the bullpen -Redmond/Stroman as replacements

Everyone was telling me there was uber-depth in the organization, in terms of SP. Where is it, again, since we're all complaining about how bad the options are?

 

Its a shuffling of cards right now. No reason to be promoting and demoting guys and losing them for nothing.

Like I said before the season started, and which still holds true today ... they don't have the bolded (and earlier in the year, it was asserted it was more than just a collection of #5's). They have miscast bullpen arms and minor leaguers not yet ready to contribute (if they ever will be).

 

And most other teams are trotting out 1's and 2's?

Id rather go with Rogers than Stro or REdmond. At times last year starting he was unhittable with that hard sinker ---- other times not so much. The guy has a good arm but his value is nil at this point in mop up and long role.

I just remember one Nolin start when he came up and he looked really bad. As in, not major league material whatsoever. He's 24 and I believe spent most of last year in AA with good but unspectacular numbers for AA. Rogers would be a much better option than Nolin IMO.

I'd like to see Happ moved for a C prospect and Nolin promoted to take his spot.

Not worried that Stroman cant figure it out but his spring and time so far in relief says to me he needs to work on it in AAA some more and come back up with some more confidence in a starting role. In the meantime Id give Rogers another shot as SP.

Yup. This is one potential positive of Happ in the rotation. If he pitches somewhat well, there may be a that offers something for him. Sadly, I think AA may choose to keep him and even pick up his option for next year.

As much as I'd like to see Stroman start, I prefer Rogers over all the other options, not that it'll be him taking McGowan's spot.

 

I'm just not sure why you think Nolin deserves a rotation spot. He was putting up very good but not great AA numbers at 23. Maybe you think he looks good this year but I still don't buy it.

Are you Alex? Lol @ writing a guy off because of his 1.1 inning stint in the MLB. He had fantastic numbers at AA.

 

He's absolutely shredded the minors everywhere he has played for a significant amount of time. Except for AAA this year, where his K's are down and walks are up.

 

So he shredded AA when he was 23 and now in AAA his K's are down and his walks are up. Are you seriously using this as your argument?

He was 1.6 years under the average age of all players in AA, it's not like he was old for the level.

No. I'm not only using 1.1 IP as my argument. I'm saying above AA he hasn't had particularly good numbers, so saying he shredded the minors up until he reached AAA is a pretty bad argument for saying he deserves a rotation spot, if that is what you believe?

 

As for the 1.1 IP, I'm just saying he looked like he just flat out wasn't major league material. That could obviously change with more innings so it's not my main point... It's like when you see Goins at the plate. I see him take 5 ABs and to me it's obvious he can't hit at the MLB level.

 

As for the average age comment, 23 is not young for a supposed prospect to be in AA.

I think everyone agrees Happ should be traded if possible. I'm just saying all of Rogers, Stroman, and Redmond are better and more deserving of a rotation spot than Nolin. IMO Rogers is the best option of the 3, but it would of course be more exciting to give Stroman a shot.

It's not about Nolin deserving the spot, because an argument could be made for a bunch of guys. But from my perspective it's about youth, financial flexibility, results and make a determination on whether Nolin is in the future plans. He's already past the relevant age for me, but as a #5 to be used as a buffer who cares. The Jays pushed their payroll close to the brink this year and still aren't a contender. The team is an old team and isn't getting better. So using Nolin as a #5 to eat a bunch of innings at LG MIN is my optimal suggestion. Then Sanchez as our #5 next year and Nolin could be moved to the 4 slot if he's shown promise, or into LOOGY role, long man out of the 'pen or traded.

 

Rogers is what he is. He's a 28 year old #5 at best. His numbers away from Coors & Rogers Centre aren't good. His numbers split as a SP or RP aren't good. I'm not sure what you're expecting from him.

I'm the same way with 28 year old pitchers who've been beat up wherever they've pitched.
