Governator Community Moderator Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Jays have been soul searching for a solid offensive left fielder since like... Frank Catalanotto or Shannon Stewart days... it would be ridiculous if they let him walk, they just can't fill that hole.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Pillar has one of the ugliest, loopiest swings I have seen in a long time. You can't actually like him as a prospect, right? You sure you are watching the same guy. He drops his hands a lot but mostly because he's looking to go the other way a lot. His swing became a little long in his big league stint as he started to look to pull the ball (wonder who put that in his head). He has a short-ish swing though and yes I like him as a pure platoon player 4th OF. I'd still take him over any Jays hitting prospect other than Nay (although Dwight Smith is a guy I've always liked and is getting some early results this year). I never get why people get down on the low upside bench pieces that can thrive in the right scenario like Pillar and Schimpf. They are currently the two best bench options we have and should have been up here from day 1.

I'd take Barreto, Nay, Smith Jr, Pompey, and maybe even Andy Burns as likely to contribute more in their careers. Pillar could be a nice 4OF though.

shortstop Verified Member Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 from what I understand, he's made adjustments at all levels except for mlb in a rather short period of time...we need more info on him at the mlb level...watching him at the plate last night reminded me of him last year at the big club - this level is a little ahead of him...but he might figure it out this time up or his next time up with the big club...
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Yea at the minor league level. Hes facing major league pitches now. Hes an AAAA guy. Nothing to see here. You can't just give up on a guy like that this early, give him some time. The guy is good defender and baserunner as well so if he can ever get on base enough he'll have quite a bit of value.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Can Kevin Pillar stick? 31K/4BB so far in his very short stint in the big leagues. Not a promising start.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 (edited) What do you feel they are both worth? If you were to get deals done with them? Neither is worth much mid season in large part because the team acquiring them can't qualify them and get draft pick compensation. Teams will pay sometimes for SP rentals, not very often for good outfielders What did Hunter Pence get a couple years ago? Can't think of any other similar cliber OF traded mid season recently. TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 ECJF is correct. First off, you don't drop your hands to go the other way ... at least if you want to be a successful hitter you don't. There isn't much difference at all of video of him in the minors before his call-up, and during or after. I hate his swing ... it's not the length (that's what she said), it's still short AND loopy. It's horrible. He starts with high hands, drops the crap out of his back shoulder, dips his back elbow into his body and his hands flip all over the place as a result - drastically down, then back up. His bat isn't even near level at POC. Video from back in the day in Lansing, and now, shows the same thing. Maybe he makes it work, but in terms of teaching a swing, it's a horror show. I'd cover my boys' eyes if he was on TV when they were looking. Pablo Sandoval or Carl Crawford without the big leg kick...Jason Giambi without the exaggerated follow through. They aren't pretty swings but they aren't the worst of the bad swing habits. Short and Loopy is much better than long and loopy or even long and straight in most cases. What I do say is that generally guys that drop their hands will be susceptible to the high fastball and in the majors he will be but that hasn't been Pillar's problems to date. It's chasing breaking pitches out of the zone...and right handed pitchers. As I said give him 70% of his AB's against lefties and he is going to be successful as a bench player. Jays won't do this (and hopefully he doesn't attempt to pull everything this time) but some team will see it some day.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Just want to state that I'm not comparing Pillar to any of these hitters I believe he's a 4th OF.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 15, 2014 Posted May 15, 2014 why do our players end up injured? http://instagram.com/p/oCCBibmmFQ/?igref=ogexp Pretty amazing hand eye by Reyes though
