TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 51% of pitchers that throw more than 25% curveballs end up on the DL the next season (39% of all pitchers who threw 120 IP end up on the DL). Pitchf/x had Jose Fernandez throwing 33.6% curves last year.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 It makes you look at guys like MB and wonder how they continue to go out there year in and year out and throw 200 innings no problem. I know he does not throw near as hard but after 13 seasons you would think that would wear an arm down.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 He's more of an exception to the rule They guy is a very valuable guy to have in a rotation,....... Just not at his price.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 I'm increasingly of the opinion that targeting guys with clean records of health is the way to go when adding veteran arms. If I'm making an investment, I'll take a guy with clean mechanics and no history of elbow or shoulder problems. Give me a Mark Buehrle every day over a Morrow or Johnson. It just boggles my mind. 13 years of 200 innings pitched and is well on his way to 14. Happy to have him even when he does come down to earth.....20 game winner lol.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Guy is just a machine. He's going to end up being well worth the 3/52 or whatever it is we'll pay him. If the team is trying to compete next year, give me James Shields or Jon Lester and buy Morrow, Happ, and McGowan out. Lester/Shields Dickey Hutchison Buehrle Stroman Two very good young arms and three vets that are virtual locks for 200 innings. No way they'll pony up for either. Subside your pitcher boners
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Realistically, they'll probably buy Morrow out, sign Wandy Rodrieguez to a minor league deal, and replace Melky and Colby with Gose and Soriano. I see them picking up Morrow's option. No on Soriano. They are not that dumb.

I would like to see them bring melky back (Dominican team lol) let Colby walk bring in Gose providing he has not slept with AA's wife, then bring in Franklin. That is a very solid lineup. Then with Hutch, Stro, MB, and Dickie bring in another guy that can be reliable/healthy does not have to have sexy numbers as long as he can give you quality innings.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 If Wandy Rodriguez can pitch close to 200 innings again this year. Not a bad deal especially if they can get him on a minor league deal.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Next year is going to be very interesting. the following lineup costs about $105 million: C - Navarro 1B - Encarnacion 2B - 3B - Lawrie SS - Reyes LF - CF - RF - Bautista DH - Lind BN - Izturis SP - Dickey SP - Buehrle SP - Hutchison SP - Stroman SP - SP - Romero Add $2.5 million for buyouts for McGowan, Happ, Santos, Morrow, Thole and the team is at ~$107.5 million with at least one rotation vacancy and no 2B, LF, CF, bench, bullpen. It's going to be tough. Trade Rasmus, Reyes and Buehrle
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Trade Rasmus, Reyes and Buehrle Why trade Rasmus when he is a UFA after this season, Reyes is going to be stupid tough to trade due to a huge contract. And MB is probably the most valuable guy in our rotation right now. Only guy that provides innings and quality ones at that since about august of last year.

I like how you write this as if it's happening...3 of those 5 guys are probably here next Spring Training lol.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Trade one of Bautista or Eddy along with Buehrle for young studs
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 This injury really is bad for baseball. I agree. Practically every hard thrower is going down with injury. This is not sustainable. Eventually pitching is going to go to hell because parents are going to see the high injury rate for these athletes and steer their kids away from it into something that doesn't mean a 50% chance of destroying a body part after a few years in the pros.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Trade one of Bautista or Eddy along with Buehrle for young studs I haven't been around this forum for a while...so does EVERY thread end in this conclusion now?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 I'd be surprised. Santos = $6 million team option with 750K buyout - f*** you McGowan = $4 million team option with 500K buyout - Exercise the option Happ = $6.7 million team option with 200K buyout - f*** you Morrow = $10 million team option with $1 million buyout - Exercise the option Thole - Exercise the option If you're constructing a team with a $135 million payroll cap I don't see how you can pick up any of those. Possibly Morrow's, but that would severely hurt the team's ability to address the OF, 2B, and improve the rotation. .....y despedir a Alex.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Add $2.5 million for buyouts for McGowan, Happ, Santos, Morrow, Thole and the team is at ~$107.5 million with at least one rotation vacancy and no 2B, LF, CF, bench, bullpen. It's going to be tough. Call it a 140m budget and that's 32.5m for the 4 starting spots and the bench/bullpen. 2B: Jed Lowrie is a free agent. Maybe he gets $8-10. Him or Drew will sign for around that and be good options. LF: Aoki seems like the kind of guy that's going to be a bargain if he went for a reliever on the trade market. 2/12? CF: Chris Young won't be expensive. 1/4 or something. SP: With the remaining $12.5, you could probably nab Liriano or Peavy, maybe Masterson. McCarthy is a guy I really want to look at. BP: Please. It's a bullpen. Stilson/Loup/Cecil/Delabar/Drabek is a solid 5, and then there's maybe Mike Adams, Joba, Frasor, Lindstrom, Neshek, etc. There'll be guys in the rule 5 draft too. Relievers are replaceable, after all. Bench: Gose/Kratz/Muni is a solid 3, and then there are guys like Johnny Gomes, Nate Schierholtz, Tyler Colvin, Seth Smith, maybe even Kevin Youkilis. Alternatively, we could trade Navarro for one of the spots and sign Russ Martin. There are options.

Who's good enough?

Why would Jed lowrie come to the Jays to play second when he can go to the Yankees to play shortstop. Let me help you here NOT HAPPENING
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 This team DESPERATELY needs Jed Lowrie

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 This team DESPERATELY needs Jed Lowrie Jeter is retiring, the Yankees will pounce and probably overpay too. Something last like 4 years 50
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Lowrie used to play for the Red Sox so eh Hardy is out there too for them
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Trade Reyes, free up 20 million, sign Lowrie for SS, trade for Franklin/Ackley Its combination of money, position and playing grass. Jed lowrie is entering his thirties, he wants to look out for long term health. I say target one of Texas's mifs
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 What about Jorge de la Rosa. Free agent, Good arm, decent stats
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 IF options Hardy to short, Reyes to 2B Headley to 3B, Lawrie to 2B OF Denorfia, Aoki, Markakis SP Hammel, Lewis, Liriano, Peavy As always, there will be some decent opportunities to buy efficiently. I just don't trust the FO to recognize them. YES YES YES to Denorfia. Very under rated player

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted May 13, 2014 Posted May 13, 2014 Also, Brandon McCarthy, Brett Anderson, Floyd, Beckett All depends on the deal they're looking. Base salary is everything with these guys.
