Convo Verified Member Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I have had countless arguements with people who think every stadium in baseball should have the same dimensions so they all play the same. Like all the other team sports. They don't understand that playing in a different climate will effect the way the ball travels. It is also one of the great unique things about baseball seeing how different every ballpark really is. How utterly boring, reminds me of most other sports.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 You could argue that the dimensions in baseball are limitless. Theoretically, as long as your ball is between the foul poles, it is fair, even it it goes all the way to China. There is also no theoretical limit on the time of a game. A tie game could theoretically go on for years. Baseball is infinite both in time and space.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Exactly. For some reason they feel its unfair and the Yankees and Red Sox are cheating. It's actually in the rulebook that no ballpark that was created beyond 1968 or something (forgot) cannot have a wall below 320'. Yankees have 2 (left and right field). In a way, it is cheating to play in that park 81 times a year.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Cheating would be hitting in that park and pitching in another. Cheating is building a park that is in blatant violation of the rules. Y'know, like Yankee stadium. And Fenway is still a shithole.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I think they made an exception because they wanted it to be just like the old stadium. Which is a s***** reason to give them an exception. The only valid reason I could possibly think of is "there isn't enough space to build a stadium with these dimensions..." and even then, they'd have to have a great reason for not finding a different location. If old Yankee stadium was such a historic place, why is it a parking lot now?

I hate the Yanks as much as the next guy but I get this. And I highly doubt it's caused much of an issue.
Caper Verified Member Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Cheating would be hitting in that park and pitching in another. No you are wrong. You can certainly design a team that maximizes the effect of playing 81 games in the same park.

If old Yankee stadium was such a historic place, why is it a parking lot now? If you were there in the last few years of its existence you'd realize it didn't have anything close to a historical feel. It felt like a ballpark built in the 70's (reno). Sitting with the "creatures" though, a 2nd to nothing fan experience. Tiger Stadium had a historical feel..... Fenway has a historical feel. I was just at Wrigley for the 100th anniversary game and that doesn't feel all that historical. McDonald's & other fast food joints around the park, just doesn't feel right.

My point is that it WASN'T historic. Which was the excuse given for copying the (illegal) dimension... Because all good things must come to an end. It was old and needed to be replaced. I hate the Yanks as much as the next guy but I get this. And I highly doubt it's caused much of an issue. It was a rhetorical question. It's a parking lot because it was just a generic stadium, not some sort of landmark that needed to be duplicated.
