Oh s***. That's not good. Not sure if they should send him out anymore, you don't want to burn that arm. I'd prefer McGowan as a killer man out of the pen. A Santos that can go multiple innings. 95 mph fastball as a starter, bump that to around 97 out of the pen, with that killer slider and other breaking pitches, he'd be great in the back end.

 

It's so sad to read this though. I wanted him to succeed so badly

He's not starter quality. Shows some nice pitches but a guy who's capped at 80 pitches most nights isn't very useful. It's sad but we have to face the reality. I think it's time to give Stroman a shot IMO.

I'm willing to cut him some slack as he was rushed into the rotation on the back of a sliver of a spring training. There seems to be little harm in the experiment at this point, anyhow. Redmond and Happ haven't distinguished themselves, and I think most would want Stroman to have a bit more seasoning in the minors. At least McG's arm is feeling strong, so we know we've got a good bullpen arm there if the starting doesn't work out over the next two or three weeks.

His option is for $4 million and he's a true talent 4+ ERA guy who hasn't thrown more than 25 innings since 2008. We might as well just set the money on fire.

Those are two enormous ifs.

 

Let's see if he can hold it together as a pen arm for the rest of the year. If not, let's wipe our hands clean. You can only hold onto a reclamation project for so long.

Why would he be 4+ ERA? I find him very similar to Santos with less walks if anything. Fastball in the high 90s with decent control, and a great slider too. He does well early on usually but his arm dies out. Having him for short outings - like a Santos/Delebar/Loup/Cecil would produce better results than him as a starter. Is he not projected for a 4+ ERA as a starter? It seems logical that it will go down if he comes in late in ball games

Why wouldn't he be? He has parts of 7 seasons in the majors and his one year with an above-average xFIP- was 2007 when it was 85. He throws hard and has a good breaking ball, but his command is bad and the overall package isn't something I'd want to give more than a minor league contract to.

 

Exactly! Imagine how effective that is in the late innings? Especially if Dickey or Buehrle was pitching earlier. He's not as effective as the other people in the pen, correct, but he's a safer bet to go to than people outside of the main core of the pen and it saves innings thrown by the main crew. He could be a sneaky arm where he comes in in the 6th or 7th before the big guns come in, his fastball/slider combo is pretty good. Not good as a starter because his arm dies out and he's forced to hold back on velocity to preserve stamina, but I can see him doing really well as a 1-2 inning dude

 

Santos' slider might be the best pitch in baseball.

McGowan is out of options so it's more practical to swap him with someone already in the bullpen than to call someone up. The bullpen makes more sense with a hard thrower like McGowan replacing one of the long men anyways.

 

No one really likes Happ or his gripping about the rotation but when the guy who essentially took his job flat out states that he doesn't have the stamina to be a starter, his gripes start to sound pretty legitimate. If Happ is here then it should mean he's healthy because as many have pointed out, he still had rehab time to work with (which by the way a team should not use for any reason other than rehab unless they like attracting legitimate union grievances). A healthy Happ in all likelihood isn't the 20 ERA gas can we saw in the spring and more like a 4.5 ERA 5th starter. If he's less than that well the team might as well find out what's it's paying for regardless. The team has enough depth at the moment that it doesn't have to feel tied to one option in the 5th starter. Might as well hold try outs until you find someone who can eat some innings whether that's Happ, Redmond, Rogers or whoever.

McGowan is destroying our bullpen and in the end of the season that is reflected in the standing. The Jays organization doesn't owe favors to McGowan; the best for the team is to put him back to the bullpen and give the #5 spot to 1-Redmond, 2-Happ or 3-Rogers.

What is there to judge? By his own admission he doesn't have the stamina. Shouldn't that be case closed?
