ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I do dislike what some posters do here where they pick the team to contend, which by definition means you think they're a good team, but then s*** all over the organization when the very team THEY picked to contend shits the bed. Same with the Gomes situation, some didn't like the trade, but not specifically because of him, yet they play the "I'm just a dumb fan" card and s*** all over the organization. I guess since we're fans and have no accountability, we can claim we would do this or do that so much better and when we're wrong, who cares, we're not getting paid anyway. Full disclosure: I'm as dumb as they come, I picked this team to win between 86-92 games last year.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I feel like our front office kept JPA because they expected improvement from him and not because they were really pleased with what he had done. That's just a guess though. I think they expected him to improve too. And yet they seemed to do little to help him actually do so.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 My comment was much more to do with the statement the Jays let Gomes go because of awareness that this isn't acceptable. jays let Gomes go because they are epically bad at managing and evaluating talent (period)
Caper Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I've always been a baseball fan.... But only became more then casual around 2010..... In those few years I've seen just so many guys become very useful major leaguers after being almost completely written off... Edwin, jose, Loup, Gomes, Napoli, Gattis, Delabar.... And I'm sure there is a tonne more.... Anyway. I just can't understand how people can so confidently and completely right guys off.... and yes I'm thinking of Goins.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I'm not sure if it's wise to totally dismiss a late bloomer like Sierra when the thread concerns how many of you ( and the Jays ) totally wrote off Gomes. It would almost be better if Bautista becoming one of the leagues best hitters didn't happen. Because now every retard fan thinks every player can be a late-bloomer. O....M....G lets keep everyone, because maybe when they're 45 they'll be good.

O....M....G lets keep everyone, because maybe when they're 45 they'll be good. the fans thinking it is only a small part of the problem. the biggest problem is that the FO thinks this true and AA has spent the last years digging through other teams port-a-potties for the next diamond in the rough.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I'm not sold on Sierra, but I'm not completely writing him off...he has natural athleticism..good bat speed. He has too many moving parts in his swing, but he could make adjustments and progress. He hit well enough this spring and good last year in his call up. I would most certainly sign drew...but I don't know the budget constraints... I'm still amazed at how recklessly stupid he is on the field.

Not so sure. He also (rightfully) gave up on Snider, Thames and Arencibia after (correctly) realizing they were never going to break out and be good players. He guessed wrong with Gomes but I think most people would have. Gomes never looked better than a decent utility player when he was here.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 If you are taking 60 or 70% of at bats at a position you're not a bench player.... So he started a lot..... I hope you're not implying he's a good player because of that. His career bat is below avg and his fielding career wise at all the positions he's played, mostly 2B is meh..... So in the grand scheme, he was at best a decent Util guy.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I think they expected him to improve too. And yet they seemed to do little to help him actually do so. Sometimes you have to help yourself.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I'm still amazed at how recklessly stupid he is on the field. it has gotten better. his footwork in RF has been better. His throws have been to the right person and online as well. If he can hit well enough and with a bit of power, I think he's possibly a big asset off the bench. Izturis is really the only completely unacceptable player on the 25 man. Diaz or Kawasaki would be better options and if f***ing mental AA hadn't throw out a 3 year deal to a guy who no one else wanted, the jays would have had better options. I really hope they try to slide Jeffress through waivers next week and bring in another bench player. need another bat.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Sometimes you have to help yourself. For sure. And offensively he may have be a lost cause. So unaware of his own deficiencies. But the lack of help in terms of coaching WRT to his defense was the most glaring thing.

Not to mention...Bautista as a 24 year old put up a .280/.360/.490 line in the minors and his worst minor league season was as good as Sierra's worst.

I don't mind trying to squeeze talent out of players. But because Bautista broke out, every idiot f***ing fan thinks that every player has a chance to break out. My mindset of hope for players succeeding when chances are slim are for guys like Mark Prior & Grady Sizemore. Guys who were studs before, suffered injuries and tried to or are resurrecting their careers.
McD Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I've read through this thread, and I still can't find one person who claimed to have seen Gomes' "breakout" or saw last season's performance coming. However, fans have every right to pick apart this trade. It's not up to the fans to come up with scouting reports on every player and then to analyze the trade for the organization. That's on the org. But fans have the right to look back on a trade and decide whether it was a good trade for the org when all things are considered. It's the FO that is leading this team through drafts, signings, extensions and trades. And fans can create opinions whether or not this FO is leading this team in the right direction. And looking back, trading TDA+ and letting JPA assume the catcher's role only to rightfully release him, while Gomes' "breakout" occuring... it doesn't look like the Jays made the right move at all when it comes to the catcher position. And having this gaping hole at catcher during our "window of contention" while letting go a player that could have really helped us, does look pretty f***ing awful for the Jays' FO. The pressure is on. great point well made. f***ing...this.

Gomes never looked better than a decent utility player when he was here. still cant believe we got Delabar and his weighted balls for Thames. Bumfiasco got way too many games last year. we knew very quickly he was a self absorbed sack of s***. Gave up on JPA? no, they let him run out of options and refused to give him an offer. Snider was broken after years with Cito. If Snider had come up with the Cards he'd probably be a superstar. and let us never forget the starts that JoJo got week after week even though everyone in the free world knew he couldn't pitch. I'm still not convinces that Thole is a better option than Kratz. at least Kratz would have given than a power bat off the bench.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 8 posts in a row style. Now you f***ed up that for him
Caper Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Why would you look at the career numbers of a 33-year old? He isn't the player he once was, and the decline started in 2012. When you're a career bench player, it doesn't take a whole lot of skill erosion to render you useless. Guy just doesn't hit the ball hard anymore, and has lost a step in the field. It happens at that age. You loved the signing.
Caper Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I dunno, the fact there isn't a single useful player on the bench seems like a pretty legit gripe two days before opening day. Sierra's arm is an absolute weapon.... I think he'll be ok at the plate as well. If there is a sac fly in a close game... there's not many other guys I would want receiving it then Sierra.

Because now every retard fan thinks every player can be a late-bloomer. O....M....G lets keep everyone, because maybe when they're 45 they'll be good. But the problem is... that isn't happening. That's just what a few of you guys say... and then just suck each others dick a bit and declare it true. No one thinks Ryan Goins... or Jim Negrych.... or Yan Gomes is the next Bautista. Yeah.... it's ALMOST better that we don't have Bautista... because now people want Yan Gomes or Ryan Goins to get a look... yeah... that's it... what a f***in' retard.
Caper Verified Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 It's annoying. Like every AAA player who happens to find himself in Buffalo should be given 300 PA in the majors because Bautista broke out that one time. What? It's annoying when people ask if Yan Gomes is any good, you auto toss him and he turns out he is actually good.... and then that annoys you? Ok....

You mean... like Brandon Morrow? Yeah that sucks. Or like Texas did with us in Napoli? Or Gomes with Cleveland? Or Arizona with Aaron Hill?
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Just shows the calibre of internal talent assessment with Gomes is let go for essentially nothing (Aviles alone is plenty for Rogers) We sure could have used (misused?) Gomes last year

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I'm not picking on BTS here. Just pointing out that even good posters here mostly thought Gomes was organizational filler before he got traded and blossomed in Cleveland. I cut AA some slack here.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 But the organization is supposed to know more than even the smartest fans. Well of course. And they guaged this wrong in retrospect. I think most teams would have not predicted MLB success for a player with the minor league numbers Gomes had produced. Players surprise, for better or worse. It happens. And I like Rogers, he's useful to have. Though obviously, knowing now what a bust JPA turned out to be, and how devastating it was to lose Reyes last year, having Gomes and Aviles last year would have been very valuable.

I also think Sierra will be a decent PH option for Thole, Navarro and Goins The problem is I'd prefer more versatility from my 4th OF. We have little to no speed on the bench at all Edited March 30, 2014 by G-Snarls
