PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- San Diego Padres pitcher Josh Johnson is expected to be out four to five weeks with a strained right forearm.

Padres manager Bud Black made the announcement Saturday after a 3-all tie with the Chicago White Sox.

The oft-injured Johnson was projected to be the team's fourth starter. He figured to pitch the first game of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on April 4.

Johnson, who spent the first eight years of his career with the Marlins, led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010. He signed an $8 million, one-year contract with San Diego after going 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 starts for Toronto last year.

Black announced the injury to Johnson after saying Ian Kennedy and Tyson Ross will follow No. 1 starter Andrew Cashner in the rotation.

100% supported Alex not giving him the QO.

This overgrown POS is made of glass.

I'll admit I really waffled on it

Can you imagine the s*** storm on here right now if we had promised him 14.3M this year and this was how his season was going to start? Yikes...

I was all for offering him that QO. I'll admit it. We all knew he was a huge injury risk though. Mind you, I didn't expect it this quickly.

Perhaps AA really did know something?

We more or less be left with the same team we have now less 14.3 million. I think the right decision was made regarding JJ even though his talent is better than most on the staff. The guy just can't Dodge injury

Hutch will make everyone forget about the glass wonder that is JJ. Unfortunately for us we have another SP made of glass in Morrow and possibly another in McGowan if he somehow ends up in the rotation. I'm glad AA never QO JJ.

Redmond may end up providing more value.

Oh really? Because from where I'm looking the money was pocketed.

They offered it to Ervin Santana. He chose to go elsewhere.

He's not out for the season. There's no reason for these knee-jerk over-reactions.

It works both ways, if he started the first 4-5 weeks pitching well, you know some would be rubbing it in the Jays' face.

Yes. It's bad enough they complain that we didn't add a pitcher this offseason, but none of the options were actually impressive at all outside of Tanaka, who's unproven.

Yep. He was even quoted as saying after signing with Atlanta that he really thought he was going to Toronto until the Braves come a-knocking. I didn't really follow the Santana thread, but I doubt he would just say that if it didn't have some meaning.

Yeah I'm not sure why 'we' care about Rogers making an extra $14M this year.

Also, this shouldn't validate anyone's opinion about the QO. You can't evaluate stuff in hindsight. I'll be thinking they shouldn't extended the QO no matter what happens this year.

You can't? Well, I'm sure many fans thought the team would contend last year only to be s***ing on the organization at the end of last season for putting it together...lol.

In all seriously though, I agree with you. I'll admit I was for making the QO and I can only hope the Jays medical staff didn't like the look of his medicals.

At the end of the day, the FA market thought he was only worth $8M for 1 year so I was probably wrong in thinking the QO would be worth it.

D-Mac may provide more WAR lol (he was close last year).

Quite possible. I'm just hoping someone steps up. We have several options, it would be nice to get lucky with one.

Right! Btw, I meant to type "should've." lol

I've been careful about not criticizing AA's ability to built a good baseball team for 2013, but I was always against the Dickey trade and was always worried that last offseason would hamper the franchise's future. So that's what I go back to this offseason. The 2013 team should have won, but it didn't and AA should have been more prepared for that scenario, but not mortgaging so much of the future.

Oh no doubt, I raged against the Dickey trade. I know many consider the Marlins trade to be worse because so much value was given up, but I consider the Dickey trade to be the worse of the 2. I would've been fine with taking a step back in 2013 to keep the prospects. The organization would be in really good shape for the future. That's the key though, they had to be willing to accept a likely 90+ loss team in 2013 and it seems this franchise doesn't want to go into a season expected to lose 90+ games.

I think it's our year to get lucky with injuries. I almost fell off of AA's jock last week but I'm right back on riding away like a whore. This is our year, time to get excited. McGowan is getting me hard, I'll take him over JJ any day. I'm popping wood over hutch daily. Dickey's makin my dicky move. The offence is solid!

Baseball in just over a week! I'm pumped, sick of the pessimism.

Standing pat is going to be the story of the year.

Syndergaard will for sure

What does that have to do with JJ? I get that dealing Syndergaard sucks, but he is gone, time to move on and not make similar mistakes.

Nothing wrong with some optimism even if it's highly unlikely to occur. This forum is a breeding ground for depression sometimes.
