Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Sounds good. A schedule would help to keep some interested who want to win but may not be free every game to participate. Any ideas for a bonus? So far we have: - Pick 2 players - Pick an opponent player as well - Pick which pitcher will give up the most home runs that week (+1 bonus) - Guess how many home runs that day (+1 bonus) - Which team hits one first (+1 bonus) - Double points - Picking a player from the AAA team.

Looks good. You don't want too many options as well, so this should be good. Not sure about picking a AAA player though, but I guess it serves a niche. My only issue with that is the vast majority don't watch enough if any AAA games.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Furthest home run that week? The occasional time with all home runs counting is kind of nice too

If we did choose it, I'd post the stats or something for people to look at. But you are right, not many people follow the AAA enough to care.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Furthest home run that week? The occasional time with all home runs counting is kind of nice too As in whoever had picked that player during the longest home run of the week gets the points? I like that idea!
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 You could add a category for the team that hits the most HR's that week? Just so it's not only focused on individual players so much.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 As in whoever had picked that player during the longest home run of the week gets the points? I like that idea! Yup. One of the things from last year that stood out was that a home run early in the game gave people in the competition nothing extra to cheer for the rest of the game. The extra points for things like 2 in a game, etc help that a little. Maybe something like bonus for walk offs, home run in extra innings or late in the game, etc.

The first post of the thread has a list of standard bonus points.

Just so it's not only focused on individual players so much. The teams the jays face or any team in the league? There are so many different things we could do, but the only thing I'm a little worried about is making it too complex. Would be kind of cool if we had another board contest for different weekly predictions or something. Stuff like picking the team that scores the most runs, team with the most hits, giving up the least amount of hits, or even picking players around the league to have the most hits etc.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 I'm going to own this year. Last place?

Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 These won't be available each night to choose, maybe one of these will be a bonus day every few days or twice a week. I get that, I'm just saying adding too much can be a bad thing as well. The contest is fine as is, some tweaks can help, but too many might not.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Ready to come out of forum retirement for another run. Welcome back! You did really well last year coming in 3rd, this year should be more competitive and better.

The contest is fine as is, some tweaks can help, but too many might not. Right now I have bonus days for all weekend games except the first and last weekends of the season. Saturdays are question based, and sundays are option based. Do we think that is too many and should do every other weekend?
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Playoff Format: Season divided into 2 sets First Half: March 21st-June 8th. (64 games) Second Half: June 9th - August 20th (63 games) - Top 14 members from each half move on to the playoffs - Winners from each half get a bye to the final playoff round, - 2nd/3rd place from each half get a bye to the second playoff round. - Playoff ties go to the member with the most overall points during the season. - Top 14 members in the second half move on, does not include those who made it during the first half. - Still important for those who make playoffs in the first half, to increase overall points during the second half. Playoffs Round 1: August 22nd-September 4th (22 Members, not including 6 byes) Round 2: September 6th- September 17th (Top 12 members from round 1, + 4 2nd/3rd byes) Round 3: September 15th-September 28th (Top 8 members from round 2, + 2 Byes) Thoughts?
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 We are starting in spring training? March 21st? March 31st* my bad.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Thinking that was a mistake, but it would be good to have some pre-contest spring training games. Maybe the ones that are televised. I don't think ST would be much fun, maybe as a test for some of the bonus options though to see how they work. There's so much turnover of players in a ST game...

Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 No clubs do until the final week We didn't even during the last week, last season. I hope they do this year to give the people of montreal a better game to watch.

Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 If you pick Melky Cabrera for literally every game, you will likely win. He's a very safe bet to go deep at least 10 times this year. At 5 points a pop, that works out to at least 50 points.

Maybe bring Melky down to 4 points. Or maybe we impose a limit to picking players to 4 times a week or something? That seems like a lot of work though
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Yes, we limited the amount of times you could pick a player during playoffs last year IIRC. It's a lot of extra work keeping track of how many people picked who, and how many times. Especially if there are 30+ members playing each week. Might be better to just evaluate the point values?
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 It's a lot of extra work keeping track of how many people picked who, and how many times. Changing Melky to 4 points would help.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Would "Pick a Buffalo Bison (or lansing, Bluefield, Dunedin whoever the team is) player" on Jays off days work better? I like this idea, since lots of people don't follow Buffalo, maybe having it only worth 1-2 points is the best way to go.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted February 1, 2014 Posted February 1, 2014 Kratz/Navarro Platoon is probably way better. Steamer says 20 dingers between the two at 5.5 points. 110 total. Yeah that would do it. I wasn't aware Dioner went deep 13 times in only 266 PA last year, where did that power spike come from?
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 1, 2014 Author Posted February 1, 2014 Yeah it would be a lot of extra work and you already put a lot of work into this as is. Changing Melky to 4 points would help. Unless we just trust members to being truthful, or make members keep track themselves, and when they make their picks do somehthing like Monday - I picked Rasmus Tuesday - Bautista Wednesday - Bautista Today i pick Navarro. But this might be making things too complicated, and unappealing to most.. thoughts?
JoJo Parker Dunedin Blue Jays - A SS On Tuesday, Parker was just 1-for-5, but the one hit was his first professional home run. Explore JoJo Parker News >
