EnglishJay Verified Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Bob, I read on the Sanchez trade thread that you're a Darlo fan. I'm a Chesterfield fan who has been to Feethams many times, and the Reynolds Superdome! Heard they were playing up at Bishop Auckland...is that still the case?
EnglishJay Verified Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 I've been looking at the BBC cricket site...it says Toronto have a cricket team representing in the Canadian t20. Do we need to make a cricket thread, lol? Anyone been to watch?
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Bob, I read on the Sanchez trade thread that you're a Darlo fan. I'm a Chesterfield fan who has been to Feethams many times, and the Reynolds Superdome! Heard they were playing up at Bishop Auckland...is that still the case? Haha, it’s a long story that involves two administrations, the chairman George Reynolds being pulled over and arrested by police with £50k in the boot of his car, being kicked out of the league, starting again from the bottom of the league pyramid, moving from the arena to Bishop Auckland, 4 promotions in 6 years, and now back in Darlington sharing a small stadium with Darlington Rugby Club!
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Honestly though, it’s been fun being a Darlington fan the last few years. As a league two team for most of my life - the first game I ever went to was in the old division 3, we went down that year and stayed in the same division for 20 years until relegation - exciting football was rare. At that level the defenders are infinitely better than amateurs, but any attackers who are any good are snapped up by better teams in higher leagues. When we were in a bad run I once went nearly 4 years (about 10-15 games) without seeing us score! But in lower non-league where the teams are part time and leagues are regional, us as a “real team” can attract crowds of 1,500 compared to the 100-200 average for most teams. So for a builder (for example) who is good at football but doesn’t want to give up his real job for a risky short career as a lower division professional footballer, if he lives in the North East he’s obviously going to want to play in front of a proper crowd. Means we normally have some of the best part time North East players. And at this level the defenders and goalkeepers aren’t very good (if they were they’d easily have full time jobs in the lower divisions) but the attackers are good - so you see lots of goals!
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Our first season in the Northern League we got 100 points, 100 goals, and were breaking attendance records at every ground we went to. It was great!
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 13, 2019 Posted August 13, 2019 Unfortunately the closer we get to league football, the more money is an issue. We had to sell our best striker last season to balance the books.

Anyone been to watch? 20/20 should be more popular in North America, it’s a more exciting sport than baseball if you strip away all the history and just watch the game. It’s all about the Ashes right now though, and even I admit you’ll never get North Americans following Tests as anymore more than a curiosity!

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 Soccer question: If you can only make 3 subs in a soccer game what's the point of having more than 3 players on the bench?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 16, 2019 Posted August 16, 2019 Soccer question: If you can only make 3 subs in a soccer game what's the point of having more than 3 players on the bench? You sub either based on injury or strategy. If you're losing you're likely to put in an attacking player, if you're winning and need to hold you might sub in a defending player (e.g. sub out the striker for a defensive midfielder). If none of those are true you might still sub out one player for another with better stamina, or you have what they call a "super-sub". There's also the second keeper.

I guess this makes sense but the benches still seem excessive. Ps. Davies got into Bayern's first game today!
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2019 Posted August 19, 2019 Thanks. I guess this makes sense but the benches still seem excessive. Ps. Davies got into Bayern's first game today! Players tend to be specialists and formations are important. You wouldn’t normally want a natural right back playing left wing for example. If that did happen, the other team would consistently attack that weakness for the rest of the game.
Ex Player Verified Member Posted August 24, 2019 Posted August 24, 2019 Soccer question: If you can only make 3 subs in a soccer game what's the point of having more than 3 players on the bench? Because you're never sure which player in which position might get injured or needs to be subbed. For example, if you were to just keep 3 subs on the bench (a striker, a midfielder and a keeper), then what would you do if one of your wingers got injured, or one of your fullbacks?? You would have noone to play that position
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 26, 2019 Posted August 26, 2019 Soccer question: If you can only make 3 subs in a soccer game what's the point of having more than 3 players on the bench? a 25 man squad, plus a full unlimited roster of u21 players is the biggest waste of cash ever. Most teams 17 or 18 play all season

Most teams 17 or 18 play all season Haha, utter nonsense. Teams need a big squad to cover for form and injuries. Football players get injured all the time, all modern teams rotate players (the first choice 11 basically no longer exists and hasn’t for years), and the wages for squad players are significantly less than the transfer fee you’d have to spend on a new player when your 1st choice left back gets injured and you don’t have anyone else because you’ve got a tiny squad so you don’t “waste cash”.
Madkenstalin Verified Member Posted August 27, 2019 Posted August 27, 2019 Absolute disgrace that two historic efl clubs are faced with extinction. One is in debt to the tune of just under £1m. Its wrong that the rich Premier league clubs were able to each contribute £250k for the former league chairman's retirement fund, but they can't chip in with £40k each to save Bury. The balance of money in the sport these days is shocking It was just ten years ago when Bolton were competing in Europe. Today they could be wound up. How clubs can be allowed to rack up such ridiculous debts and be ran so badly is awful. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk Unfortunately running a team is expensive and both Bolton and Bury have owners that don’t want to lose money by selling, but aren’t prepared to bankroll their teams either. I do think there should be a fund that PL teams should have to pay into to act as a failsafe for teams in danger of going out of business. This could fund teams that are then compulsory taken over (instead of being expelled from the league) while searching for buyers. I’m not sure how long that could go on for though, the FA would be worried about encouraging irresponsible spending, and the PL isn’t run by the FA.

If these clubs are bailed out, it wouldn't be a deterrent for other clubs to not overspend. I couldn't imagine what would happen if my team who I've had a season ticket for since the 90s would cease to exist. I know it's "only sport" but it is the livelihood of many people that are in jeapordy. Almost happened here on my doorstep with Notts County. Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk

Just like my team (Darlington) they'll have to change the name (we added 1883 on the end), go part time, find somewhere to play, and get used to playing in division 9/10 (for them in the North West Counties League) against the likes of Runcorn Town.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 27, 2019 Posted August 27, 2019 It seems insane that a league that is set to make £9 Billion in TV deals this year could have teams going under. Even if they have dropped tiers. Is every tier it's own Financial entity?
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2019 Posted August 27, 2019 Well that’s it for Bury - they’ve been expelled. 14 day extension for Bolton.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 27, 2019 Posted August 27, 2019 A sad day for football. I’ve only been to Bury once, to watch my team play them before we went out of business. A good lower league traditional stadium - 4 classic stands and right next to a housing estate!
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 28, 2019 Posted August 28, 2019 and people are pushing for a relegation system in North American pro sports. It is crazy though that the Greater Manchester area has 2.8M people and 8 professional clubs (now 7). Then you have another 15 Semi-Pro clubs in Div 5 thru 9. Forget about coverage and attendance, how do you get your share of Sponsorship money?

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 Hey JFL, Davies scored for Bayern yesterday! If they don’t buy Leroy Sane by the transfer deadline tomorrow, Davies should get quite a bit of playing time this season.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 Hey JFL, Davies scored for Bayern yesterday! If they don’t buy Leroy Sane by the transfer deadline tomorrow, Davies should get quite a bit of playing time this season. Yeah, i watched the game. Sportsnet has the rights to the Bundesliga games so they show all the Bayern games and Dazn has the rights to the Champions League games so i have lots of access to the Bayern games. The goal was just a tap in but he was incredible when he was on, blowing by players 1 on 1. He set up Lewy who should have scored, and blew by a player 1 on 1 in the box and almost scored again. Bayern is not in on Kane anymore after the I. Perisic and P. Coutinho signings. They played Davies a lot at left back and it appears that's where they view him long term and with rumors this off season of a David Alba transfer they could be looking at him as the long term replacement. I don't really get that as Davies pace and dibbling makes him so unique and exciting as a winger. (Kovac often has sprinting challenges in practice and it's been reported Davies is the clear cut fastest player on Bayern) His goal vs Tottenham is probably his best goal at Bayern: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tG_HjRP_k2I <-- he hit that ball with his weak foot. In terms of playing time it's still a bit dicey. S. Gnerby and K. Coman have established themselves as some of the top wingers in the Bundesliga and now you have Perisic in the mix too. He's gotten significant mins in 2/3 Bundesliga games so far though so that's nice and Bayern appears to be comfortable playing him multiple positions so that opens things up to. My ultimate wet dream would see Davies get loaned out to my fav team Ajax but i have since learned part of the reason Davies took less money to go to Bayern was because they promised not to loan him and promised him first team mins right away which is something Liverpool and Manchester United while offering more money would not promise anything. So it appears Davies will stay on Bayern for the foreseeable future. In other news, i really like Arsenal this morning in a high scoring game.
