KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I got optimistic about Darvish and last season lol. I will never get excited about anything in the offseason again. Yeah... It's hard not to be a cold hard realist when you've been rooting for the Jays for any length of time.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Yeah... It's hard not to be a cold hard realist when you've been rooting for the Jays for any length of time. I was also a teeny bit optimistic that AA was going to upgrade our pitching. Reality has set in that A.A may just sit on his hands, even if it is the best move.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 I think he just might be... But I still don't see him choosing Toronto and I don't see AA outbidding the teams he'd rather play for by 20-30% Would love to be wrong but... Do we have any accountants on here that would be able to shed some light on the taxation differences for Japanese nationals if he were to sign in Canada vs the US (preferably a low tax state like TEX).

Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 We need a pitcher so go for the best available

I don't have a lot of hope on Tanaka . 1) the risk is huge , 2) ,It will break AA,s 5 year contract rule 3) Darn Sure Tanaka would rather pitch in a Seattle/LA and 4) I just don't think AA has the money plus he never went and scouted him personally . I have sat Seattle many times and watched all their Japanese fans idolizing Ichiro . I,m sure he knows this and the fact they have the largest Japanese population in North America . I really expect him to sign in Seattle . Now if one pitcher was the missing piece then I would not be adverse to giving Jiminez a 3/15 deal but we have 4 holes not 1 and Jiminez will likely get 4 years .

Agree on Tanaka But I think Jiminez is worth signing. Just because you need to plug 4 holes doesn't mean you don't start with one. And I think it's more like 2 holes. And if Stroman or Hutch can't plug that second hole you trade for someone in July.

I don't really agree with the logic behind that. I'm not too optimistic about this team myself and not too crazy about Jimenez but I don't think AA can make the moves he made last offseason and now just take a defeated approach and not do anything to improve the club. The payroll being as high as it is simply doesn't justify that - You either improve the club or you blow it up and we both know that he's not doing the latter. Besides, I think you're exaggerating a bit about the number of holes on this team. I don't have a doubt that Melky will be better, the catching spot is obviously improved and there's much more depth at the back of the rotation which killed the team last year. Gaining 3-5 wins in the offseason (SP+2B) could make a big difference if other things go well and possibly get the team to 90 wins. I know the chances of that are slim but Alex has gone too far to stop now. This should pretty much be his last chance to redeem himself to some extent and I definitely think he'll do something... Let's just hope it wont be a big f***up like last year.

If the Jays are still looking for pitching in July they should look to blow it up, not compound their failures.
Smokey Verified Member Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 Yup. Now that he's gone this far, not adding wins is just more of the horrible mismanagement that got him here in the first place. The team is old as s*** and ha a $130 million payroll. If you're going to sit on a ~85-win team in that situation you f***ing fail at your job. Well the previous two offseasons have been major failures so maybe we should be expecting the worst lol. However, I think him recognizing that his job might be at jeopardy will make him do something... whether something stupid or not shall be seen though.

There really is no difference aside from the GST/PST you pay at Canadian stores.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 9, 2014 Posted January 9, 2014 There really is no difference aside from the GST/PST you pay at Canadian stores. Shouldn't be a factor then.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I think right now the falling Canadian dollar is our worst enemy.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Nothing stopping the Jays from negotiate a salary in USD if they really wanted to.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Nothing stopping the Jays from negotiate a salary in USD if they really wanted to. I would think, All agents will deal in US dollars
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I would think, All agents will deal in US dollars Yep, any deal with any player the Jays (or any team) makes is in US Dollars. The problem is that all of their revenue comes in Canadian Dollars so if there's a big discrepancy they get screwed.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I would think, All agents will deal in US dollars Right The team could get hurt if the CAN $ falls, but the player won't.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Right The team could get hurt if the CAN $ falls, but the player won't. The team hedges so it would take awhile to have an effect.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I'm pretty sure all contracts are dealt in US currency. Yes they are. I'm pretty confident that it appears in the mlbpa rules
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 I'm pretty sure all contracts are dealt in US currency. yes, it was put into the mlbpa book because players were worried when the canadian dollar was shite. it is good to have a single currency to make all deals comparable and safe. I'm sure there will be a time when players will fight to get a different currency when the american dollar crashes and dies. lol

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 No matter who gets Tanaka I just really hope it doesn't take until the last minute to get a deal done
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 No matter who gets Tanaka I just really hope it doesn't take until the last minute to get a deal done Why not? That would keep a lot of teams out of the Jimenez sweepstakes and he seems to be our best realistic target.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 Why not? That would keep a lot of teams out of the Jimenez sweepstakes and he seems to be our best realistic target. Maybe... Yeah you may be right I guess I'm just getting impatient

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 bnicholsonsmith #BlueJays keeping tabs on Tanaka per Gibbons, who says the RHP is about to get paid "a lot more than you and me"
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2014 Posted January 10, 2014 We need to jump on Jimenez ASAP (get negotiating). I see some big value there. Yep. It is said that $14M per is the new asking price... if so something like $12M per is a realistic price. 4/48 is a very reasonable deal IMO. We need to get Jimenez locked up before one of the five teams that lose out on Tanaka gets desperate and blows their load. If that process drags out until February, Jimenez will get restless and may sign. If Tanaka signs in the next week, we're likely locked out of Jimenez.
