ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Lawrie brings additional value to the Blue Jays because if his "Hockey Player Mentality!!!" i.e. his Canadianness. Beeston and others at Rogers are praying Pompey does pan out 'cause imagine how much they'd milk having 2 legit Canadian starting everyday players. Now, if they would use their brains and sign Russell Martin....
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Anybody else see Hanley as the biggest landmine in this year's free agent class? Do not want, at all.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 JD, doesn't do the team any favours by having a declining asset, getting paid. 28 y/o with 4 years of control? Must be a declining asset getting paid.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 28 y/o with 4 years of control? Must be a declining asset getting paid. Donaldson is interesting because he'll hit free agency entering his age-33 season which should prevent a 7-8 year mega-deal. If you acquire him, you count on superstar Donaldson over the next 2-3 arb years, but there's also the possibility that he extends for a palatable amount of money given his age. It's an opportunity to add a franchise talent for close to a decade if things go well.

As much as I hate to think this. With the insight Hurl has given on ownership looking to sell the team more than trying to win, is so true. Lawrie's "Canadianness can't be measured, it's off the charts for importance. Beeston and others at Rogers are praying Pompey does pan out 'cause imagine how much they'd milk having 2 legit Canadian starting everyday players. The FO would mimic the catholic church by having tercet walking up & down the aisles with a collections plate looking for handouts from the fans to sign Martin.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Anybody else see Hanley as the biggest landmine in this year's free agent class? Do not want, at all. I see Asdrubal, VMart, or Sandoval in the vicinity.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 We don't know what they have going into 2015, since there are plenty of guys with options which may or may not be exercised, pending FAs, and guys who may or may not be offered arby. He (Donaldson) is getting paid the same way Lawrie will be getting paid ... very poorly. What do you think he'll make in his first arby year? Around 4 They very well may not be a bigger bargain. They may not do anything going forward. Possible Getting actual premium performance for well below market value is a good thing. Being stuck with a couple lottery tickets and a guy who can't stay on the field, or progress with the bat, is not. Agreed. This didn't make any sense, either. I thought someone said your IP came back Ferguson MO?? I just figured the citizens of Ferguson were similar to Oakland. Amirong?
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 28 y/o with 4 years of control? Must be a declining asset getting paid. That's what the numbers show
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 He also didn't progress as one would expect according to the cookie cutter average. Not everyone adheres to the Bell Curve o' development and decline. Can you imagine if all the players who sucked for years panned out at 28 & 29 and had a burning desire to play in front of an entire baseball crazy hotbed of fans in Toronto?? My god, the world might explode.

A 3B/DH playing SS.. and one who will not be back with the Dodgers as that team is planning to cut payroll after losing the NLDS and to pay off losses from their bad TV deal with TWC. Any team that signs him to play SS would be stupid.. he's been falling off a cliff defensively.. 16 errors at SS this year.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 The point was that Stanton is not better than Donaldson. Trout is better than Donaldson. I'll take Stanton over Donaldson everyday of the week.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I'll take Stanton over Donaldson everyday of the week. If we're talking purely 2015, it's Donaldson for me. I wonder who the better long term asset is. Stanton will obviously likely be more productive over the next 5 years but he hits FA sooner and is gonna get f***in' paaaaaaaaaid
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I'll take Stanton over Donaldson everyday of the week. So would I. There's a bunch of players I'd prefer over Donaldson all things considered.

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 ooooooooooooo 4 years of control >>>>>>>> 2 years of control With their 2015 projections basically a wash, there isn't an argument for Stanton.

I hate quoting Steamer to back my argument, though even they are projecting Stanton will be more valuable in 2015 and are projecting a decline on Donaldson next season.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 All things considered, clearly Donaldson right now. What if Donaldson continues to decline every season over the next 4 years?
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 What if Donaldson continues to decline every season over the next 4 years? What if Stanton gets hurt again? What if Donaldson gets better?
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 What if Donaldson continues to decline every season over the next 4 years? He'll still be the best player in baseball.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 He'll still be the best player in baseball. Nobody has said anything worth mocking.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 In the short term I would take Donaldson, but long term obviously Stanton when considering age. That being said Stanton can't stay healthy and if were talking about who is more likely to be the better short-term asset I'll go with Donaldson who has more WAR in his past two seasons compared to Stanton's past three seasons combined.

Stanton's fault that he got hit by a pitch in the jaw I assume? In terms of moving forward, Stanton is a better asset. Donaldson has peaked and won't likely be a 6-7 WAR player again. Even Steamer has him down for a considerable regression next season.

I really don't understand how you can just disregard two years of team control. Even if you think Donaldson is a 4.5 win player and Stanton a 6-win player.

Stanton's missed time the past couple years aside from the beaning.

Even if you think Donaldson is a 4.5 win player and Stanton a 6-win player. It would be like ignoring the possibility of signing either Donaldson or Stanton to extensions. I'd rather be paying a player huge money in his prime opposed to pretty big money in his 33-38 years.

The difference being that a Donaldson extension is actually feasible for this org, while a $300 million Stanton extension probably isn't.

That being said, facts are Donalson has been the better player the past two seasons and has out produced Stanton's past 3 seasons combined during that span. I've already stated Stanton is the better long term asset, but if we're talking short term I'd take Donaldson. We can just agree to disagree.
