8IP 6K/0BB 3H 0ER is the final line for Santana.

Fantastic start to his season.

I'm going to the Jays game tomorrow night; Hurl is as well. Should meet up for beers before the game haha.

Tanaka does seem to have issues with the HR ball, however. He's already giving up 1 per start. Tonight's one against Schoop actually did hurt him, otherwise, he could've actually have won this game.

Oh, and regarding that HR.. it was a splitter WAY up in the strike zone. Wonder if teams are taking notes on Tanaka regarding this..

Poor Lincecum... how the mighty have fallen

His xFIP was 3.94 today.

Not as bad as it seemed.

According to Tanaka he threw a slider, but I guess you know more than him.

Good thing the dealt Fister for Krol!

Yeah, beyond idiotic. Losing Rondon for the season really hurt them though too. Krol may very well end up the closer by the end of the year.

Nathan is funny when he gives up runs. He keeps pawing at his beard like he's trying to rip it out. It's not the beard's fault Joe!

Looks like he's kinda good. He also dominated ST. Whelp.

The stats are nice but give the hitters some time. Control is good though.

I never cheer for injuries to opposing players, but it's about time a Rays starter need TJ....or am I just forgetting other cases?

Jeff Niemann had it last year, which was their first in quite a while. They've enjoyed remarkable pitcher health.

I just looked at his declining velocity and it said it may be coming lol, didn't expect immediately.

Hopefully he gets the velo back after surgery. Matt Moore used to be a blast to watch.

You're a strange guy.

5 K, 1 BB, 4 IP. How is that bad?

I didn't say he had a bad start, I said he's not that good anymore. It's decidedly convenient that you left out the 2 HR, and 4 HR in the last 2 starts.

Better than ERA off one start...

Did I ever refer to ERA?

Why get so defensive about Lincecum not being that good anymore?

Poor, sweet AB2014...what have they done to you?

This thread always derails. That's part of it's nature.

But I like the discussion.

I find the notion that the pitcher has a negligible impact on the chance of a hit per ball put in play VERY hard to swallow.

In other "almost MLB" news, Henry Owens has 18 Ks in 2 starts in AA. He had a 6 inning no-hitter (game called due to rain) with 9 Ks and 2 BBs, and followed that up with 9 Ks and 0 BBs in 6.2 innings (6 hits, no runs).

It appears he might be one of those few gawky guys with command issues who is figuring it out. If the kid ever adds mass and MPH, and actually has found his command ... yikes.

Many here told me that Owens was a bad or "very early round" pick.

He's a stud

Orioles OF Adam Jones after striking out twice against Yankees SP Masahiro Tanaka: "Nothing special"

Video --> http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/10760769/adam-jones-baltimore-orioles-not-buying-hype-surrounding-masahiro-tanaka-new-york-yankees?src=mobile

I defiantly hate the O's more than the Yankees. They just seem so f***ing douchey Jones leading the way. Yanks and Sox are just whatever and the Rays are probably liked MLB wide. I just can't stand the O's and I want to see them back in the cellar.

Here's something I was wondering. If BABIP off a pitcher is mostly luck, you would expect no relationship in the stat between good or bad pitchers. If it is largely influenced by pitcher skill, you'd expect there to be a big difference. As a quick and dirty check I looked up the 10 pitchers with the highest and lowest BaBIPs on Fangraphs:

10 pitchers with lowest BABIPs in 2013:

1 Jose Fernandez 0.240

2 A.J. Griffin

3 Travis Wood

4 Clayton Kershaw

5 Madison Bumgarner

6 Hisashi Iwakuma

7 Scott Feldman

8 Max Scherzer

9 Jarrod Parker

10 Miguel Gonzalez 0.260

That's a mostly quality list of guys by any measure, but...

10 pitchers with highest BABIPs in 2013

1 Bud Norris 0.333

2 Joe Saunders

3 Doug Fister

4 Edinson Volquez

5 Edwin Jackson

6 Justin Verlander

7 Rick Porcello

8 Lance Lynn

9 Jeff Samardzija

10 Felix Hernandez 0.314

Some very good pitchers on there too. This doesn't answer the question, and I do agree there HAS to be some luck involved in pitcher BABip. How much of it is luck? 50%? 80%? 99%? Can't tell. But it's interesting.

A lot of those low BABIP guys play in BABIP-friendly parks (all but Gonzalez and Wood). You have to normalize for that.

Anyway though, there doesn't seem to be any relationship between BABIP and talent based off of those two leaderboards.
