During the first series vs BOS this year, I sat in the box next to him and can understand why he might rub some people the wrong way.

 

Still, I can't imagine the people at Rogers are too impressed with the technician that leaves their HOFer's installation partially completed only to have him tweet about it.

Johan Santana close to signing with a team

 

Once a dominate pitcher, Johan Santana has battled injuries and it has caused his career to not be as promising as it once seemed. Since 2010, he has pitched in 316 innings. He last pitched in 2012 and is now looking to comeback this year.

 

Santana is close to signing with a team on a minor-league contract, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

 

He says that there has been speculation that it could be the Minnesota Twins, as he grew up in Fort Myers, Fla., where they play Spring Training. Other teams who have shown interest are the Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees and New York Mets, according to Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York.

 

With the Mets in 2012, Santana went 6-9 with a 4.85 ERA and a 111/39 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Any team that signs Santana knows that he won't be the pitcher he once was, but still is a solid option for them if he makes the team.

That`s interesting. Having seen guys throw in the upper 90s with no movement get squared up with relative ease I`m guessing movement accounts for more than 15%.

I'm confused by where the percentages would even be coming from.

 

Are they just arbitrary percentages that represent importance?

 

Or is it, X% of run prevention can be explained by velocity, in general, and only X% can be explained by movement. But if that's the case, why are they summing to 100% - where is control?

 

I'm pretty sure I've read that the order of importance in terms of effectiveness is: Velocity >>> Control >>> Movement

 

But, the specific importance ratio is probably different for every pitcher. For Mark Buehrle, fastball control is a f***ton more important than it is for Aroldis Chapman.

I'm not sure I even understand what you're asking. The percentage of what? By velocity, I assume you actually mean speed, since velocity is a vector, and would include what I think you mean by movement.

I don't think movement variance within the 2-seamer bin would have any more effect than movement within the 4-seamer bin.

 

If movement from a 2-seamer has an impact on pitch value, then, generally speaking, it probably matters when looking at that movement relative to 4 seam movement. Just like a changeup plays off a fastball, a 2seamer plays off of a hitter expecting a 4seamer.

 

So I guess it would depend on how you did the analysis here?

It does, huge difference. I didn't do it comparatively to fastball since that would also depend on frequency of the pitch. For example, Buehrle never throws a fastball.
