Holden Caulfield Verified Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Coming out of the steroid era, where pitchers are now dominating a little more, this isn't such a bad idea to have a few of these guys around. It used to be much more prominent in baseball than it is today. Imagine throwing a knuckler in there when we need a spot start? Could throw the opponent off. And maybe we do find another Dickey at a much cheaper price this way.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 I see no downside to turning failed prospects and wash-outs into knuckeballers. You get one back-end starter out of it and it more than justifies the experiment. In fact I assume the only reason this doesn't happen more often is that there are very few instructors who can teach it. The only downside with this is the one Dickey brought up, the demands on his time. He's not a player/coach, he needs to focus on his own preparation not that of others. This would probably work better with a retired knuckleballer working as roving instructor (Candiotti?).

Dickey in the starting rotation and Tomo Ohka in the organization on a minor-league deal, the Blue Jays have more knuckleball pitchers than most. But they might not be done adding knuckleballers yet. “To be honest, we’ll look to add some more guys if we can. We’re looking to see if we can delve into that area a bit,” Anthopoulos said. “We may look to get some other guys that we think can be guys to convert.”
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 Oh man. Didn't read the replies but sure AA and co are getting torched..but really it's a decent idea if the premise is to restrict it to the org guys that clearly can't make it on their own merit. Throw some s*** at all the wall with guys like that, see if one in a hundred sticks. Doesn't seem like it can hurt anything
