Tired of people who class an ace as a Team's best pitcher or creatively use the Top 30 to deem someone an ace.

Lame.

Classifying the definition of an "ace" is a stupid argument in general. I was just curious because I thought he was implying that Fister isn't a top 30 arm. Now I know that by ace, he meant a top 10-15 pitcher (and I agree that he isn't in that range). Case closed.

It is a conceptual issue, like Radiohead video "just"

Law definitely didn't like the trade:

I can't believe the Tigers couldn't get more total value than this for Fister, who is easily a top 25-30 overall starter in the game; they may have traded more to fill needs than to maximize their return.
A lefty reliever, a backup at second, and a non-top 100 prospect is just not a good return for two years of one of the top 30 starters in baseball.
Awful return for two years of Fister. Surprised AA couldn't beat that.

The fatass was so exhausted from signing Navarro that he had to take a nap. Missed his chance on Fister.

Sometimes things are cut and dry... accept it conspiracy theorist.. Jesse is that you?

They did a sloppy job with the asset. Not sure what about that is a conspiracy. (For the record, I loathe Jesse Ventura.)

By definition of the term you are using, you're saying you don't consider Fister a top 30 pitcher for next year. Do you or do you not consider him a top 30 pitcher?

In my opinion, these are some of the pitchers who I'd take over Fister:

Kershaw

Grienke

Bumgarner

Cain

Wainwright

Miller

Lynn

Cole

Bailey

Latos

Cueto

Cingrini

Strasburg

Zimmermann

Gonzalez

Fernandez

Lee

Hamels

Teheran

Minor

Medlen

Harvey (when healthy)

Price

Cobb

Sabathia

Lester

Peavy

Verlander

Scherzer

Sanchez

Shields

Sale

Hernandez

Darvish

Holland

Weaver

Like I said, I think Fister is a great starter so I don't know what the point of arguing is. I just don't view him as a No. 1 starter.

Fister is projected to make $6.9M in 2014, which is WAY under his market value. So the salary-dump angle some are raising doesn't make sense. I don't get it.

This is mind boggling from Detroit's perspective. I'm shocked they never held out for more, especially with the cost of FA starters this offseason. Fister on the open market would get a sweet deal.

A no. 1 starter is by definition a top 30 starter (not necessarily tops on his team just a player who would be one if talent were distributed evenly), an ace is probably something like top 10, top 15 at most. I don't think you can use the terms interchangeably.

Fister is not close to the best, like Kershaw, Hernandez, Verlander, Wainwright etc. There are so many other starters who'd I consider closer to them than him. He's a solid pitcher and I think he's been great the past three years, though he's not close to their playing field.

It's quite ridiculous. Seeing the word "ace" and Fister in the same sentence just struck me as odd. He's a great pitcher and all, though seriously? Thanks for the support! Seemed like all the members of the Fister fan club were all ganging up on me lol.

I think in my posts I made it clear on what I meant when using the definition of "ace" or "No.1." Regardless, that was the point I was trying to get across. Fister is a great pitcher and I'm a huge fan of his, no doubt. As for rating pitchers, everyone's rankings will be different. Do I consider Fister a top 30-40 pitcher in the game? Sure he's definitely in that range somewhere. There are still other pitchers who aren't "No.1's" that I consider better than Fister. Though when I saw the phrase "borderline ace" I thought we were talking about being a top 10-15 pitcher in all of baseball. Case closed though!

Nats tried for Price...wouldn't move Rendon. Settled on Fister...who knew they'd be able to steal him as the Tigers were desperate for a utility infielder. I like Ray...but he's a mid rotation guy best case scenario.

Would have loved to add Fister. If we end up trading for a guy like Jeff Samardzija for a similar package I will be pissed.

You're gonna be pissed then

But I'd trade the equivalent for any mid-rotation starter

What would be our equivalent to the package the Nationals send to Detroit?

Aaron Loup (lefty reliever), Sean Nolin (decent non top 100 pitching prospect), Maicer Izturis (Utility infielder)???

Obviously an awful trade for Detroit. Really bad.

Seems like they panicked because the arb deadline was getting close which is dumb because they might be the only franchise in baseball that didn't want to go to arb with Fister.

Forget that. That's actually a positive scenario. What should get you pissed is the very real possibility that AA give up a far far superior package for an inferior pitcher.

The obsequious lapdog is at it again I see.

You were being completely ridiculous using some nebulous definition of an ace as the basis for your argument. The facts are that Fister has been a top 10 pitcher over the past 3 years and projects to be in the top 20 by both Steamer and ZIPs. Whether that means he's an "Ace" is highly subjective and pretty irrelevant.

I know this is revisionist, but if this is true it's disappointing that either a) we were not willing to have beat this or B) we did and the Tigers inexplicably took this instead

If the Jays were in on Fister, could you imagine the Tigers wanted Janssen for Fister and the Jays said no?

People that use the term ace when describing Fister are ridiculous.

Goins, Nolin, Cecil.

Hell I would have kicked in a piece bigger than all those three to get it done.

Basing any sort of argument off of a term without any real definition is far more ridiculous.

Jeff Passan tweeted something to the effect that the Tigers were openly shopping both Porcello and Fister for relief help. I hope he's just making stuff up because if true the Jays (and to be fair pretty much the whole league) should be kicking themselves for not pouncing on that.
