Yes, Wagner and Loup are super cheap, but 1M for McGowan and Rogers and less than 1M for Cecil are all cheap too.

Rogers is a non-tender, He's not cheap.

Are you Dayton Moore? Or Amaro?

I'd take Melky every time over Byrd.

Why?

Career:

Melky: .287/.337/.409

Byrd: .280/.336/.425

UZR has them both as neutral defenders.

Give me the guy coming off a 4 win season, not the guy who just got a growth removed from his spine.

MelByrd: Tons of steroids, fake website and Chimichangas with mother cells.

Ya, that and a very deep free agent market for relievers with no draft pick comp attached. Relievers are best dealt at the trade deadline imo.

Yeah thats very true. Need to catch a contender struggling for late inning help at the deadline. Going into a seasen most teams are going to sign FA and see whats happens with their own guys. DET would be pretty s***** to take a guy like Janssen as any big value (main piece) for a Porcello

Lind

Infante

Chooch

Izzy

Thole

Sierra

Gose

Dickey

Garza

Buehrle

Morrow

Happ,McGowan,Rogers,Hutch,Drabek,Redmond,Romero,Nolin,Stroman,Jenkins,McGuire,Sanchez

Stacked bullpen 1-7

I couldn't even invision that not being a playoff team.

That's still a very average rotation. #4-5 spots are massive question marks. I have zero faith in Brandon Morrow being effective until I see him holding up into June.

The lineup and BP are very good

That rotation could be good (if we get 2-3 step up performances) or bad again (if we don't or if Buerhle/Garza have mediocre years)

Our fortunes in 2014 depend so much on the starting rotation and some luck that it isn't even funny

(And there's no guarantee we get a Ruiz and Garza caliber upgrade either)

But I agree this team isn't nearly as bad as some on here seem to think it is. As long as AA comes through on at least 2 line items (catcher, mid rotation caliber starter, league average 2B) I like our chances in 2014.

Question mark. We need men who can withstand +200 innings

btw Deck McGuire was drafted over Sale for that reason............. "+200 IP horsepower"

Disagree

1M expected arbitration for a 6th starter/long man/swing man? I'll take it.

I know you don't like him, but be objective

Posted
Our Payroll is increasing even without adding outside help due to arbitration

But we get to (presumably) delete JPA and Rajai Davis

Posted
We're at about $138 million right now without adding anyone, and were at 120 last year.

Man that is bad after how 2013 went.. lol.. How is AA's a$$ not on the line?.. It HAS to be

Just looked and Steamer projects an 84 win team approximately (with our arb players).

Being uber pessimistic about the team seems to be the 'in' thing on the board right now. We're not in a great spot by any means, but its not an end of the world type situation.

The big question right now is how does AA deal with the current challenge? Do all the limitations being put on him force him to be sensible (much as he was in his early tenure) or does it make him more desperate and foohardly (as he increasingly seems to be). There's certainly reason to be nervous but we can't discount the possibility that AA will find opportunities to improve the team in the short term that, unlike last year, won't have major long term consequences.

Steamer projects 39.2 WAR and team IP and PA checks out.

That is more optimistic than I would have thought for sure. Upon reading your post I assumed Steamer was still drastically over estimating pitcher health on aggregate but after looking, it seems to be far better than in years past.

Back up the dump truck, lets sign Cano!!

Posted
Lets not lose sight of the main point though: $150M and no farm for a 84 win true talent team is still pretty bad.
Posted
Pitching is a few IP low actually.

Substitute in a few innings from unknown, replacement level scrubs and voila!!

Posted
I kind of wish we knew how bad JPA's framing was so we could project the impact of adding a new C.

Don't worry about that. Whoever we add will be equally bad.

That's because you aren't being objective and you have a hate on for AA. This team isn't far away from contention and is as healthy as it's been since Alex took over.I'd bet on this team over your precious Rays next year.

Being a member of the irrational Toronto betting market (Jays preseason WS favs, any Leafs future), of course you would.

It has to do with age and future value potential. Either value via future trade, or signing a further extension (hypothetical). Byrd will be 37 next year and Melky 30.

Hypothetical, future, team friendly contract extensions don't count towards an asset's value.

Wow, more than I expected although if you count framing, he's probably more than worth it from a $/WAR perspective. If money wasn't so tight, I wouldn't mind the Jays paying that at all but as it is, there's only so much money and a lot of items on the grocery list.
