L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Does this give the Jays a better chance? It seemed evident AA would never put an aggressive posting bid in, but now that it's only 20 million to negotiate, he should be inclined to at least bid that and give himself a chance. Teams that are close to the luxury tax may shy away, since I'm assuming a larger AAV will be given to players. Probably just all wishful thinking on my part.

At this point, I'm not confident AA has 20 million to spend much less 20 million plus the price of the contract.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 At this point, I'm not confident AA has 20 million to spend much less 20 million plus the price of the contract. Sadly, probably true. FFS if he can't add one #2 at least, there is virtually no point in trying to compete. Blow it up. I have confidence in a guy like Hutch, but who knows how many innings he can realistically throw. Until I see Drabek throw strikes at the ML level I see no reason to believe he can start, Morrow is glass and Happ is Happ. Watch our pen get taxed this year, and all of our ace relievers get injured because of the workload.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Bidding, and being serious about a contract will be two different things. What's he worth? 5/70?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I'm assuming lower posting fee ups the total money for the player
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Sanspo.com says that Tanaka will be posted. C'mon AA! https://twitter.com/dylanohernandez/status/412695419349504000 Their owner has flip-flopped about a dozen times in the past week, probably just to get attention. I won't believe Tanaka is being posted until he's posted.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 I'm assuming lower posting fee ups the total money for the player More money for the player, but likely a similar number for the overall player + post amount. In the old system, a team would decide "We believe this player is worth $80M over 6 years." They would then calculate that $50M was required to sign the player after acquiring the rights. Their post would then be $30M. In this system, the same team coming to the same conclusion will post $20M and then offer the player $60M over 6 years. It's not really going to save MLB much money.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Not the MLB per se, but the Jays I was referring to. If Darvish is worth 110, I'm assuming we will see roughly the same for Tanaka (because of hype, and Darvish's success). 5/75?

Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 The Jays will bid for Tanaka, it's a no brainer. Bidding and bidding to win are two separate things. I'm sure AA puts in a bid, but I doubt he will be willing to pay Tanaka the contract he will command.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I'm not staying up for 24 hours waiting to see the bids come in this time.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Hmmmm......I don't know about that. The real question is does Tanaka want to play here? I sure as f*** hope so for all our sakes. Honestly, there isn't any real indication AA will seriously be in on Tanaka. I hope he is, but I get the feeling he has tunnel vision on the trade market.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 I forget who it was, either Chisolm or Davidi, said Alex will be in on him. So there's that. I hope your right.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Kevin Gray!!!! Guys career went down the shitter Yeah but he did it in epic style.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 If I'm AA I'm getting Kawasaki on the phone with him to let him know how much Toronto embraced him and how he enjoyed it here. ....not that i think that would carry much weight? Couldn't hurt though.

If Darvish is worth 110, I'm assuming we will see roughly the same for Tanaka (because of hype, and Darvish's success). 5/75? Possibly a bit more actually. Tanaka may not project as highly but several factors will drive up the cost I believe : 1. Teams less fearful of Japanese pitchers after the Darvish success compared to Matsuzaka 2. Much lower posting fee means more money a team can offer player if desired 3. More money in the game this year thanks to TV revenue increases 4. Lack of quality in the free agent starting pitching pool this year 5. Tanaka, if posted can bargain with MULTIPLE teams instead of just one. This will surely drive up the contract. 6. More teams think they have a shot at playoffs these days putting more teams in the hunt for pitching

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2013 Posted December 17, 2013 Honestly, if he's that high (and don't forget there's 3M - 4M / year on top of that in posting fee), I don't think I'd want him.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 17, 2013 Author Posted December 17, 2013 Dude! Tapatalk!! JonHeymanCBS 1 GM who wont be bidding for tanaka: "i dont think theres any doubt" he'll get more than $100M and Jays get Shark for Sierra, Drabek and Wagner
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2013 Author Posted December 19, 2013 Rakuten is reportedly ready to offer Masahiro Tanaka $8M to stay
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Tanaka won't be coming after all??? Fox Sports: - UPDATED DEC 19, 2013 9:26 AM ET Days after expressing his interest in joining Major League Baseball, it appears Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka will stay in Japan, according to multiple reports. AROUND THE HORN Rosenthal | Morosi | Buzz Several Japanese newspapers reported Thursday that the Rakuten Golden Eagles -- which control the rights to Tanaka until the end of 2015 –- will not allow major league teams to bid for him. Rakuten will, however, double or triple Tanaka’s current salary of approximately $4 million a year. The increase would make him the highest-paid Japanese pitcher in history. Tanaka, sources tell Fox Sports 1 Insider Ken Rosenthal, is the No. 1 target of at least three clubs - the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Rangers - and probably others. His lack of availability would lead some of those teams to redirect their money elsewhere; the Rangers, for example, could renew their pursuit of free-agent outfielder Shin-Soo Coo. Rakuten could post Tanaka after next season or keep him for two more years before he becomes a free agent, eligible to negotiate with any team in any league. If Rakuten does not relent with Tanaka, MLB’s decision to pressure Japanese baseball into accepting a maximum $20 million posting fee likely will draw increased scrutiny and criticism. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/japanese-pitcher-masahiro-tanaka-not-joining-major-league-baseball-121913

Well imagine that, a team might look to improve by signing a position player when they can't get the pitching they want. It's almost as if the goal is to add wins not a particular type of player.

Naw... better to just keep hoping someone will trade a top of the rotation starter for scraps
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Yeah, this may not be the end of it, for sure
kgm1 Verified Member Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 I think they feel if they can keep Tanaka for one more season , Do a goodbye tour thru the league with him then post him next year they can generate enough extra revenue to afford the 8 mil they would pay him . Ball is in the Teams court . I think he plays in japan this year and they post him next year .
