Brett Cecil made the American League all-star team as a reliever in 2013, but midway through the left-hander’s breakout season, the Toronto Blue Jays briefly considered moving him back to the starting rotation.

General manager Alex Anthopoulos joined Prime Time Sports Tuesday, explaining that the team had some internal discussions about changing Cecil’s role when the team badly needed starting pitching this summer.

“We never talked to Brett about it, but we kicked it around for a brief moment because obviously he had success and we had holes that had come up,” Anthopoulos said.

Cecil started 28 games for the 2010 Blue Jays, posting a 4.22 ERA in 172.2 innings with a 15-7 record. The 27-year-old started 20 games in 2011 and nine games in 2012, but his ERA rose each year and the Blue Jays moved him full-time to the bullpen in 2013.

He thrived in relief, striking out 70 in 60.2 innings with a 2.82 ERA before finishing the season on the disabled list.

The Blue Jays will prioritize starting pitching this off-season after finishing 29th in MLB with a rotation ERA of 4.81.

“Right now we have volume,” Anthopoulos said on the final day of the regular season. “The question is ‘is the quality of that volume enough’ and that’s something that has to still be determined. We know we’re not good enough right now.”

Dustin McGowan has told the Blue Jays that he would like to start, and the team remains open to the possibility of stretching the right-hander out next spring. However, the Blue Jays haven’t fully committed to making McGowan a starter, as their first priority is keeping him healthy.

Anthopoulos also noted that the Blue Jays have not considered moving Brandon Morrow to the bullpen or reached a decision about Josh Johnson’s future with the team.

Morrow is so frustrating but at least before 2013 he managed to make most of his starts. And it wasn't an arm injury that shut him down for 2012. I'd give him more rope.

Cecil lost his rotation gig because of ineffectiveness, not injury, so is a different case. Maybe stretch him out a bit in Spring and see if the velocity stays afloat in longer outings.

Trade Janssen/Santos, Morrow and McGowan to the pen.......Enough is enough

This is sort of OT, but they need to stop putting middle relievers into all star games when there are starters much more deservering

This is just AA posturing for the off season, let other teams know how close Cecil was to being a starter so when they talk trades AA can say Cecil is a swing man and more valuable.

Cecil, Jansen, and pillar for a half decent catcher.....

I agreeCecil could be a candidate but how many more tries does Morrow get? He can't last.

At best Cecil would likely become a league average starter. I'll take my chances with Morrow, he has ace upside even with the potential health risks.

I'd rather see McGowan given another shot over Cecil TBH.

The most unimpressive batting champion I could find:

Pete Runnels (1960) - .320 .401 .394 .795

Jays have little hope without Morrow making 30 starts as the ace. In other words Jays have little hope. Currently Jays have a 3and a 4th starter and a whole pile of 6,7 and 8 th starters . Cecil isn't a one of two so what would be the point. I would trade him while his value is high.

Jaysblue,s suggestion of Cecil and Janssen/Santos to the Snakes for a salary dump guy like Cahill gets you another 3 .Then for f***s sake add a defensive catcher .

Then as hurl said

Hope and pray !! Realize that won't likely work so

Hope and pray more .

I am torn I am a huge Morrow fan I love what this guy has. You can't deny that this guy is injury prone. I think you spot Morrow in as a 4-5 guy so that you are not relying on him at the top of the rotation then trade Janssen/Santos (if the price is right) and you got guys like Cecil and McGowan as backend bullpen guys. We are very deep at bullpen right now why would you not deal one of the big boys. SHOULD HAVE LIKELY BEEN DONE AT THE DEADLINE.

You're unable to stay two minutes f***ing to a woman in the same way that Morrow can't start 33 games in the bigs

Are you trying to say I can't last 2 minutes with a woman? If so, I'm afraid your badly mistaken. Give me a dozen beer and a few lines of coke and I'll go all night. ;)

Just get a bunch of back-end starters with upside so that losing Morrow for two months isn't so impactful. That's the real problem: when Morrow gets hurt Ramon Ortiz gets to come in and blow a slew of games. Not so if you have (GD's favourite) Scott Baker, or the like, waiting in the wings.

Not sure about favorite but I think he'll make some team very happy this year, he'd be a nice form of insurance on Morrow.
