What they could have done is just start Oliver and have Redmond start in the second inning. What if we have a lead and Redmond pitches into the 7th they use Oliver over Santos, Delabar, and McGowan.

 

Problem is, with the Rays in the middle of the wildcard-race, not using your best(relatively speaking) guy to start the game and giving a nod to a retiring veteran wouldn't really be respecting the race. Could you imagine the shitstorm that would rain on Toronto by MLB if the Rays won, the other teams lost and it's because they put up 3 or more runs on Oliver in the first inning?

That aside, I wouldn't care if he pitched, but obviously they can't do it with this game being so important, as you mentioned.

He really should have made the request during the O's series...I liked him throughout his career and if I were there today I'd give him a nice applause but he's probably not the kind of guy that deserves a special start.
