Miami Marlins front office takes backseat to owner Jeffrey Loria

According to sources, owner Jeffrey Loria is making all baseball decisions, which rankles president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest and president David Samson.

PHILADELPHIA -- As poorly as things have gone for the Marlins on the field, a behind-the-scenes rift between team owner Jeffrey Loria and a few of his top front office executives is creating added tension in the waning days of a dismal season.

Sources said Loria is now making most — if not all — of the baseball decisions, which is fueling speculation that president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest and team president David Samson could be ousted after the season.

“He has marginalized the front office,” said a major-league source, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity. “The front office isn’t making decisions. Loria makes them all.”

Beinfest, who has served under Loria for 13 years and is under contract through the 2015 season, was rumored to be on the hot seat last season, too, but ended up keeping his job.

Efforts to reach Loria were unsuccessful, and a Marlins spokesman issued this statement: “For over a decade, the Marlins have maintained an official policy of not commenting on personnel during the season.”

Anyone think MLB tries to intervene in Miami???

Not sure what they can do but they despise this organization and owner.

Are there any other owners that control the team as much as Loria does?

In the NFL yes (Cowboys) and NBA (Kings, Mavericks)

Not in Major League Baseball

Moreno is very hands on in LA for the Angels, though I'm not sure it approaches this alleged degree of tyranny in Miami

Mark Cuban does have a lot of influence, but from reading interviews with him (he actually speaks pretty candidly) he allows his basketball people to do their jobs to find talent and he just says yes and no about spending money. He likes to be hands-on, but he isn't nearly as cray-cray as Loria. I think he's part of the Sith.

If he really is making all baseball decisions would that mean that the Marlins owner is a better GM than ours?

The truth hurts.
