theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I really think we should start Gose in CF and move Rasmus to left. Or maybe do a 3-way platoon with those two and Pillar between the 2 positions. I think that if Gose is given regular playing time he will be a valuable MLB player with his D and speed. He doesn't need to hit much at all to have a very positive contribution. I also think he will respond much better playing in the MLB than being sent to AAA again. I think his confidence plays a big role in his performance, as we've seen a bit this year. He's still young and working with CM is a good thing. This fills the hole in LF and then we can spend our money/assets on C, DH, SP or maybe 2B (See Goins thread lol). I don't think we have that much money to spend and I really don't want to ravish the farm again and I think this is the easiest position to fill in-house.

theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 You can't hit at the Major League level unless you have a Major League hit tool, and Gose has yet to show he does. And any amount of work with CM isn't going to change that. Let him be a fourth outfielder who plays sparingly against righties and if he responds well then slowly increase his playing time. If you give him the job outright you could very well end up with an Arencibia/Izturis situation. The difference is Gose is an excellent defender, has an amazing arm and great speed.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 The difference is Gose is an excellent defender, has an amazing arm and great speed. The tools every 4th OF possesses. Seeing as the Jays are contractually obligated to Melky and they'd get nothing via trade this upcoming off season. I'd like to see Gose start out the 2014 season as the 4th OF. Allow Melky if healthy to play regularly build his value up and the Jays move him in June/July. Then slide Gose into CF and move Rasmus to LF.
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 OP... this is the second time you said ravish the farm..the proper word is ravage Ravish is also a word that means a similar thing.
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Except for that one year in vegas where everyone hits he has never hit anywhere....most prospects who still can't hit at 22 or 23 will never hit in the major leagues. He will be a good 4th outfielder who can be a defensive sub and a pinch runner..that's it.
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 So we should start Goins and Gose. What could possibly go wrong? I feel more safe with starting Gose, but this is about money/assets and if we can't get a 2B then Goins might be the answer, but thats for another thread.

Ok that works too, I'm just getting really tired of having terrible defense around the field. Gose in CF and Rasmus in LF would be excellent compared to Melky and Rasmus. I don't think every 4th OF has the tools Gose does. Just look at Rajai, he's a great 4th OF, but he doesn't have near the arm or D that Gose has.
frizzer1 Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Ravish is also a word that means a similar thing. From Grammarist To ravage is to bring heavy destruction, to devastate, or to pillage. The meaning of ravaging is straightforward, as it descends literally from this main sense of ravage. Ravishing is trickier. Ravish has two main meanings: (1) to abduct and rape, and (2) to enrapture. Ravishing extends from the positive second sense—it means, essentially, very attractive—and is generally not associated with the negative first sense, so it is unfit as a synonym of rape. Meanwhile, the form is best confined to its participial adjective sense. As a verb—e.g., he was ravishing her—it is easily misinterpreted.

Ok so its a weird word, it still fits here as I was trying to emphasize how badly AA screwed the farm. tr.v. rav·ished, rav·ish·ing, rav·ish·es. 1. To seize and carry away by force.

If Gose could put up a slash line of 260/320/370 in FT duties, I'd be more than happy if he was pencilled in as the starting CF. For me its not worrying about how he's not going to be great with the bat. It's about maximizing his defence, base running and speed and expecting numbers he's typically put up in the minors in very age relative environments. If he can't put up those numbers at the plate, then yes move him to a 4th OF role. Sad thing is Bautista's declining hard offensively and defensively in RF. And I'm not a fan of Melky remaining with the team beyond 2014. So there's 2 other OF slots we're going to need replacements for and there's nothing in the system coming.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I don't think every 4th OF has the tools Gose does. Just look at Rajai, he's a great 4th OF, but he doesn't have near the arm or D that Gose has. Rajai's actually an inadequate 4thOF. He's limited to being a solid LF defensive replacement. Putting him in CF is a pinch or emergency situation and shouldn't be relied on. And as you stated his arm is weak. That coupled with shaky defence makes RF even less desirable to slot him. And Rajai's hitting is only good against lefties (25-30%) of all innings pitched.

As for Gose he's somewhere between 4th OF and starting CF. We just need to see if he can hit.

theblujay Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 If he could have something close to his line last year in AAA it would be great. (.286/.366/.419) and the year before that in AA he was even better. Of course this year he wasn't near as good, but I really think that has to do with attitude and confidence problem more than ability.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 Saying he's declining hard is a hyperbole. His bat is essentially the same as last year (139 wRC+ to 133) while his OF defense has improved. 3 DRS to 4 and 2.0 UZR/150 to 7.7. That's not a defensive decline. I've been disappointed with Bautista's defence since he showed up here. As much as he's a player who works his ass off to improve, he's very pedestrian & improvises poorly in the OF and is often in poor position to make catches he's moving back on. He's turning 33 soon and as players age, they aren't getting better. Sorry, he isn't what he is from a few years ago....and those were his later prime years...... I know I can't wait for his retirement party. Nothing like keeping players around for old times sake, loyalty and memories. Oh wait Jays fans make fun of the Yankees and Jeter for the same s***. But it's the Jays and Bautista, so its okay.

He was probably watching Melky bumblef*** his way around LF and got pissed when Alex was rocketing numerous s*** RP's and spot starters to the majors to make up for the mentally fragile pitching staff and running with a depleted bench and inadequate player in Davis get significant playing time.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 It's not like Bautista is a liability lol. He's still a great hitter Lets not use the word great. He's a good, smart hitter. You ever have a look at aging curves? I know Jose started out late in a baseball player's life, but life in the early to mid-30's the curve isn't kind on hitters.

How about a team of Ryan Goins at second, Anthony Gose in CF, Andy Laroche at first and Jim Negrych manning short? I'd say we're practically home free for the WS title.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I'd have no issue with Gose being our starting CF (in a platoon as he shouldn't face lefties) but not moving Rasmus to LF to do it. If Rasmus had huge trade value (at this point I don't think he's got as much trade value as real value so it's most likely a moot point) then you deal him, and go with the strong D, light hitting CF. Not to mention the only way that Melky isn't the LF next year is if he's not healthy enough to do so.

Not only is aging not kinder on late bloomers, they actually tend to flame out more quickly. I'm not saying this to be a debby downer but just to point out that any assumption that he will last longer because he took a long time to get good is faulty. This also holds true for Encarnacion.

If we can get good value for Rasmus in a trade than that might be a good option too. Maybe Rasmus for a SP or C. Its too bad we have Melky for next year, I don't really want him starting unless he's much better.

And I agree 100% with that view. So trading him would actually hurt us, more than help.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 8, 2013 Posted September 8, 2013 I'd rather see Gose in 2014 as the 4th outfielder, replacing Davis essentially. Davis will likely want a 2 year deal worth $4-$5 million/per season and I'm sure they'll be a team out there who needs a CF will sign him for about that and promise him 400-500 AB.
