They are not going to non tender him , They will send him down to AAA . He has options hell he should have been sent down in July

And waste over $600k and use a roster spot? That won't happen. If not non tendered, he'll get removed from the 40 and out righted. He'll declare himself a free agent and the Jays will get stuck with a few hundred K to pay. What's the point?

I just don't think the Jays give up on him quite yet so i think he gets sent down . I am with you on Ruiz , I firmly believe AA overpays and locks him up for 2 years

Here's the truth:

1. AA isn't going anywhere, not in the next year or two anyway. You might as well accept that, whether you like what he's done so far or not.

2. He has invested too much of Rogers' money, and traded away too many prospects to back off from what he has for a major league team right now. He is not going to tear this team down and start all over, not right now.

3. He will make another push for glory in 2014/2015 by acquiring more major league talent, in hopes of making this team in to a contender in that time frame. This will probably involve a free agent signing or two and a trade that might see another top prospect or two going away.

This plan might work at it might not, but that's what he's going to do. We all need to hope that upgrading at catcher is a top priority and that he does it. (for the record I say JPA is gone this off season - AA is slow to dump players but he has shown with Snider and Bonifacio that he is willing to cut ties eventually)

4. To be a winner in 2014 we need at least a couple of tweaks, some luck, better health, and some step-up or comeback performances by at least a couple of members of the starting pitching staff. (I'd like it to be Brandon Morrow and Kyle Drabek personally)

That's it. After the next two years, we have either had:

A) A successful run, team does well, makes money, in which case he (hopefully) starts selectively trading aging/expensive players to make the team younger and help maintain success or

B) The disaster continues, attendance starts to fall, in which case either he is fired or he is forced to trade away every player with any trade value in order to rebuild the whole thing

That's more like a jog then a run, if it even happens at all. Three year window ftl.

Just for giggles and turds, anyone think the Indians trade Santana? If we're gonna have an all bat no D catcher, one that could hit would be nice.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets that it is a fait accompli that Brian McCann will be playing for a new team in 2014 due to the presence of Evan Gattis and Christian Bethancourt in Atlanta as well as the Braves' tight budget.

Would be nice if it was ours. He was pretty damn good this year.

I'd welcome McCann in a heartbeat, though he'll likely demand a lot of $ and I'm sure he signs with the Yankees since they need a catcher badly.

Forget about Santana, what about the Brazilian kid that goes by the name of Yan? haha.

Ask them about Masterson and Asdrubal while you have them on the phone.

Seriously

Step 1) Sign Carlos Ruiz , Mccann is the best out there and he would be a huge fit but I,m realistic on who will come here . Overpay and get Ruiz .Strike fast

Step 2) Win the bid for Tanaka and sign him . FA market is just slim and will be overpriced so why will anyone come here . tanaka has no choice if we win the bid

Step 3) Sign a 2nd baseman in the Mark Ellis mode . Nothing great but solid 1 war type

Step 4) Sign Kurt Suzuki , yes overpaying for a back up catcher but we need the depth.

step 5) hope pray

realize that hoping and praying will not help

repeat the hope/prayer process

Then just throw in Bauer and the 'key to the deal' Drew Stubbs and you have the Marlins trade 2.0 haha.

That was my initial thought exactly

But they couldn't afford (or just didn't want maybe) to pay Russel Martin 2 years 17M (what the Pirates gave him), can they afford McCann?

(That modest contract Martin got makes me all the more mad that we didn't sign him)

I think AA will be a lot more open to spending on a C this year.

Just please get our pick protected.

Agree

It may not matter (I don't think Ruiz will get a qualifying offer, and it's irrelevant for Tanaka) but it also might (McCann and Garza, though less likely as targets for AA due to cost, may well get a QO from their teams)

I don't get step 3. Ellis hasn't had an RC+ over 100 for a while and generates his entire WAR contribution from defense. I don't see that as much of an upgrade.

And yes we would have a better catcher and a somewhat capable 2B.

I guarantee you that Arencibia would still be the starter right now, even in Yan Gomes had started the season on the Blue Jays.

Gomes would have played 3rd at the start of the season when Lawrie was out . he then would have caught occasionally when JPA struggled and then when it was obvious JPAisn't a catcher gomes would have slid into the role and JPA would have been sent down .

Only way we salvage this trade is if Rogers suddenly gains spotless control and pitches great . About as likely as Morrow throwing 32 starts and R Romero regaining his 2010/2011 confidence and control

Once AA gets A) and B) done i took the route that he wouldn't have much money left and also who would come here as a free agent . Ellis is barely above replacement level but the lack of good 2nd baseman and the lack of money made me suggest this . i could have suggested trading for Kendrick with a pkg starting with Hutch but man we need every pitcher we have . We could also try and spring Ackley but what do we have to move . I guess if the budget is whatever we want then go pay cano whatever he asks for .

Just wanted to make my post as realistically possible as I could .

I was more saying I would probably just roll with Goins and Izturis (who has been better than Ellis until this abysmal season).

I think it depends on how much AA has to spend and what happens with JJ . A good defensive catcher and tightened defense makes our rotation that much better . That defense was so bad I think the starters began to think they had to K everyone , got trying to make perfect pitches . Tighten up the defense in left ( melky was horrible ) 2nd base ( Bonifacio/Isturis were below replacement level IMO ) and behind the plate ( I don't even need a comment ) and how many more wins do we get . Add that to the gain in offense at all 3 of those positions and some health and we can survive with a replacement to 1 war defensive 2nd baseman. Depth in the rotation if we keep JJ ( Not sure why ) and get Tannaka would be strong but really it all comes down to Morrow and RR . One of them needs to be solid and healthy .

Although this is blatantly apparent, I feel Rogers gets too much flak from this board.

Me too

I'm glad we got Rogers

Gomes might have been better than JPA this year, but at best, going forward, we'd still be looking at getting Ruiz, Piern, or Ruiz, and maybe keeping Gomes as backup for next year. No biggie.

I want Jeff Mathis back as backup on his cheap contract.

f***ing Marlins

Marlins will probably compete next year and we'll still be s***... book it...

Gordon Beckham could possibly be non tendered per Rotoworld. He would be a decent 2B option. Around 90 wRC+ with above average fielding.

Pass as a starter. Could be a decent bench option though.

I'd like to see Buck back actually. He is a 1 - 1.5 WAR player but, he has some pop and is likeable.
