Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Phillies will fire manager Charlie Manuel.

The Phillies scheduled a news conference for 2:30 ET Friday but didn't reveal the nature of it. However, Salisbury and others are hearing that Manuel is on the outs. He's presumably being fired, though given that he'll turn 70 before next season, it's possible he might be stepping down and moving on to something else. We'll know for sure shortly.

Manuel out, Amaro stay

Ryno takes over, at least there won't be any show-boating or bat flips in Philly at least. I've never known a super hard working, Hall of Fame player that has made a successful manager (see Pete Rose). At least we know Ruiz won't be back with the Phils.

And yet somehow Gibbons is still employed...

You must not know much about Charlie Manuel if you think he compares favorably to other managers.

I'd bet on Mattingly having a successful managerial career. (Of course his first team has a seemingly limitless payroll so that helps...)

Yep. Phillies fans call him "Chuckles". And they almost universally think he's terrible.

Jays fans on facebook are clamoring for Manuel to replace Gibbons. One guy started a petition.

Holy f*** this is a stupid fanbase.

Because a championship ring means you are automatically a good coach, no matter how stupid your strategies/tactics are, right Randy Carlyle?

Hard to label players as super hardworking or not but I remember Bob Lemon as a manager and a good one. History shows Red Schoendienst was a good one. Frank Robinson was a respected manager, though the winning percentage left much to be desired. Joe Torre, though not in the HoF wasn't far off and was a perennial all-star. And then there's Yogi. Can't forget Yogi Berra!

Frank Robinson was a prick.

Honestly firing him is stupid, regardless of how well of a coach he really is. He's the exact same manager he was the past 5 years, not his fault now that his team is a pile of flaming crap.

So were/are Billy Martin, Dick Williams, Earl Weaver, Bill Virdon, Chuck Tanner, Lou Pinella, Cito Gaston, Jimy Williams, Larry Bowa and on and on. Everyone isn't Gene Mauch or Sparky Anderson.

Fair enough. He really got under my skin though for whatever reason.

Amaro needs the blame shifted away from him.
