Phillies, Chase Utley Agree To Extension

The Phillies and second baseman Chase Utley have reached agreement on a contract extension, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com (on Twitter). The two sides are close on a two-year deal that would be in the high $20MM range with multiple vesting options, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports

Crazy, Rosenthal is saying the 2 high 20 years are between 25 and 30 million. That's insane.

That's over 2 years. He's looking at around 14 million/ year.

Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster I misunderstood that. I thought Amaro had gone further insane

This means Cano is now looking at close to A-Rod money in free agency--he's the only 2B on the market worth anything.

He'll only get 7 years and $160 million. Lol.

The options on this contract are crazy and confusing. He only gets 2 guaranteed years then it's 3 years of options. Depending on how much time he spends on the DL they either pay very well or offer the team cheap buyouts. It's a bit of a gamble for Utley.

MLBTR:

Utley is guaranteed $15MM in 2014 and $10MM in 2015 and has a $2MM buyout on his first option. His 2015 salary will rise to $15MM if he spends no more than 15 days on the disabled list due to a specific knee condition. Each option is valued at $15MM and is triggered if Utley reaches 500 plate appearances in the previous season.

Should Utley fail to reach 500 plate appearances in any season from 2015-17, the following year's vesting option will become a club option worth between $5MM and $11MM. The specific value of those conditional club options would be based on the number of days he spent on the disabled list the previous season. The deal contains a full no-trade clause, though that is essentially a moot point because he will receive 10-and-5 rights later this month.

Hey a Ruben Amaro move I actually don't mind....

Yeah. This is just the type of contract you want as a team for a player like this. If he's playing 150 plus games you're paying him well. If he's on the DL all the time you can dump him for peanuts.

Seems like a good contract to potentially trade, if Utley can stay at least mostly healthy.

Of course, Utley would have to agree to the deal.
