No evidence to back this up? Hits are more important. I've been watching baseball long enough to know this. Come on man, at least try.

To everyone who disagrees, I just think it's plain that hits are more important and necessary compared to the nearly irrelevant walk. Just my opinion. Sorry for voicing it.

Walks are good bro. Walks mean you took a lot of pitches in your at bat showing good plate discipline, and you got the pitchers pitch count up to get to the pen faster. And you are getting on base.

Walks = Singles

Are singles overrated too?

NO obviously not. Singles test the whole team, pitchers and fielders. Walks=only test pitchers,

I think they are important. But I would agree..... they are overrated.

Yeah they probably are a bit overrated. And batting average is probably equally underrated. But both are very important.

Yeah, a groundball single up the middle is a huge test to the team.

TEsts pitcher, catcher, middle infielders, outfielders, yes you proved my point. Thank you.

Example: Kawasaki. He walks a lot, but can't hit. Not all that valuable. I guess you need a mix of the two.

Single > walk

Yeah, but then there's Arencibia who can't walk or get on base for s***. What's his value?

What does JPA have to do with this? Oh yeah, I forgot it's a rule around here to attack him at every given opportunity. My bad I won't forget next time.

A weak single up the middle proves nothing of the middle infielders, seeing as it was lucky for the ball to make it through a hole. Also, if you're going there, a walk on a wild pitch tests pitcher, infielders, outfielders, catchers AND the baserunner.

None. But he can't hit and I think OP is talking about is saying being able to hit is more important.

So the most specific extreme example of a walk=the least strenuous single? sounds good to me!

Singles are on average a little better than walks because baserunners can advance in non force situations.

The value in walks comes from A) putting another runner on base and B) avoiding an out all without actually having to get a hit.

Posted
JPA has to do with this because he can't take a walk. He doesn't get on base, and his value is s***.

Whatever, batting average>OBP anyway

This was what I was trying to say to Angrioter, thank you

Not really, changing your argument again I guess..

Wow, I didn't know having a different position as the people on this board made me a "troll." Sorry for the new opinion guys!!!!!

Yeah, teams are thrilled to see the end of Dickey, Johnson, and Buehrle, so that they can see the soft tossing Cecil, Delabar, and Janssen.

Taking pitches only works if the whole team buys into it, so that you can see weak middle relievers, as opposed to the setup man and the closer.

Having one or two guys taking pitches doesn't really help out that much. If you have an entire team constructed around the philosophy of taking pitches and you work over their entire bullpen in the first game of a four game series, it pays dividends.
