Arkadium Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I love Arencibia. You can't pick your favourite players - they just happen. Always liked him, always will. He's not the best catcher in the world, but he's not the worst. I definitely prefer seeing him than most of the catchers I've had to deal with in my life for the Jays. Please elaborate, WHY?
Hawkguy Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Please elaborate, WHY? Why you don't pick your favourite players (at least I don't). They just happen. I don't really know how to elaborate. It just happens. Same way with teams. Montreal Canadiens - I picked up from my dad. Same with the Blue Jays. As for every other sport? I have no idea - it just happened. In Soccer, I like the Wolverhampton Wanderers. Why? Who knows. Same with Football - I like the Philadelphia Eagles and again, I have no clue why. Same reason I have no clue why Pat Borders and Todd Stottlemyre were my first favourite players (and Kelly Gruber, but I usually keep that to myself, lol). Or why Patrice Brisebois and Pierre Turgeon are my favourite hockey players of all-time.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Here's some interesting tidbits on catching around baseball. http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding/_/position/c/sort/catcherERA/order/false Love him or hate him JP Arencibia has done a good job with our pitchers--a 3.79 CERA, middle of the pack(for starting catchers).(Russel Martin of the Pirates is #1, followed by Yadier Molina of the Cardinals). Keep in mind about the bad April--things have improved since then. Matt Wieters, who we just saw, has a 4.69 CERA, especially with the bad pitchers he has to catch. And here's a sign Boston is in trouble--Jarrod Saltalamacchia is one of the worst catchers in baseball, with a 4.24 CERA..unfortunately, his defensive caddy, David Ross and his 3.08 CERA, isn't due back anytime soon(concussion)--and considering this is his 2nd concussion of the year, you've got to wonder if he ends up retiring like Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. Don't expect Ryan Lavarnway to help either--he's not much better.. but it's a SSS. Chris Ianetta of the Angels is near the bottom as well. However, is CERA even accurate in measuring success for pitchers? JPA >>> Posey??? Reported
flafson Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 You guys are too harsh, can't you just say that you don't agree with that "metric"? I think it's safe to say that the only way we will get an upgrade for JP is if we develop one ourselves. And by the way, i like JP even though he has his problems.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Can we just ban this f***ing idiot? So someone makes a post you disagree with and you call for a ban?
Caper Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Jp has turned josh johnson into a low end starter so far.... Calling 95% of pitchers away it this level when the pitcher throws 96 MPH is pure retard. Throw to the same location at this level 85% of the time any major league club will hit you. JP and OP = idiots. Get f***ing real...... Yes, it was all JP. Come on man.... you're smarter then that.

What happens is this... there is BTS who believes he can build a perpetual world series contender from behind his computer... and then there are a lot of people who want to suck his dick.... As soon as he called for the ban... the rest of the lemmings just fall in place. The initial post wanted to make the argument that JPA is not the worst catcher that ever existed.... apparently such talk is against the religion of the board. I don't know if I agree with the post. I would have liked to have seen a discussion about it. Many people on the board know a lot... a reasoned discussion would have been great.

digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Let me retry this. Looking at dWAR, Arencibia still has a 0.1 dWAR--that's still better than Wieters(-0.2) and Salty(0.0). Good defensive catchers don't grow on trees. Not everyone can be Russell Martin or Yadier Molina, or even Salvador Perez(0.9). Chris Stewart has a 0.3 dWAR, Jose Lobaton of the Rays has a 0.2 dWAR(explains why he's seeing more playing time.)
Caper Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 That's the problem there isn't much point in CERA as it's flawed with both the pitchers you're catching and the relevance of pitch framing. There's a study done by Fast and others that debunk it. I'm not sure if it's gospel, but my eyes sure as f*** tell me that JPA is a brutal catcher and the numbers from the study suggest it. Wasn't there an article earlier showing JPA to not be a bad pitch framer. I know they have spoken on the broadcasts about the better job he has done.... I know I see a better target then he has given earlier.

digiblader Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Wow, Ianetta sucks! When is MS going to give Conger the everyday job?? Ditto for Carlos Santana..explains why we're seeing a lot of Yan Gomes. And Boston's really going to miss David Ross.. look at the team's performance since his concussions.
Auldphartt Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Regardless of the CERA foolishness, JPA's defense hasn't seemed quite as horrible this year, or have I just gotten accustomed to his crappiness?
Metallijay Verified Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I wonder how it really feels like being the villiage idiot like High85?

He is still pretty bad...........did you see his non attempt to stop 2 balls in the dirt from johnson yesterday?

There really aren't any great defensive stats for catchers. At least you're trying?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 You're saying we shouldn't respond to a troll post with rational discussion on the merits of cERA? http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pyw4pp0KO08/TMs-upxYq2I/AAAAAAAABoc/9Hl-rDYPmBo/s1600/Don__t_feed_the_Troll.jpg Not *to them,* lol.
