Just read several pages of info on the lawsuit. What jumped out is that since 2012 MLB has been operating without a constitution, though working within the spirit of their expired one. If a judge happens to rule that the lack of an actual constitution is a legal loophole, all territorial rights of MLB clubs are void, at least for a brief window.

MLB can not enact a new constitution during the suit. Forget how interested the Oakland A's and the City of San Jose are. The most interested party may be Tampa Bay Rays Ownership. Such a ruling would be followed by a Rays to the NYC area move in under 24 hours. The Meadowlands would get their New Jersey club and the Yankees and Mets could do nothing to stop it.

Of course they wouldn't move within 24 hours. They'd get a legal deal done that fast.

You laugh and while such a ruling isn't probable, check the info before laughing too hard.

Wow! Thats new info, the Tampa Rays becoming the New York Rays. I like the ideal, both Florida teams can't and never could draw flys. So they should move. Are most Floridians senile? Why don't they draw down there? Any ways for 49 years Oakland could never draw many people because Oakland is where the poor people live, and lots of criminal activity, hense people in San Francisco never would support Oakland, even the many years when they had a good team. San Jose is a different city which is why the Giants want to see the A's stay in a dangerous area. I say let them move to Vancouver or Montreal, at least with the latter they could do no worse than the A's in Oakland since 1964.

It's not new that Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg, a Mets season tickets holder and New Yorker would like to move the Rays to Northern New Jersey.

OK if they move to New Jersey, that would be kool, but for Gods sake don't call them New Jersey, the rest of America won't accept that name, it sounds like a weak college team on the east coast. Thats why the New York Jets and Giants are still called NEW YORK, it has a much more respectble sound.

3 New York teams is overkill. New Jersey would be fine. There is nothing wrong with the New Jersey Devils.

The Jets and Giants were New York teams who happened to relocate to a stadium across the river. If the Rays happened to end up in Jersey, they'd be the New Jersey something's. A ballpark just south west of the football stadium would become their likely home.

The USFL football nickname was very popular. New Jersey Generals would get a lot of support.

I'm originally from the US, maby you have to be a American to understand the psychology of what I'm talking about,,. Because New York is the biggest city in the greatest country in the world (sorry thats what they taught us in school), there could be five teams in the AL, and call it the New York Division, we'd accept that. In fact that would be great. But I still say the Vancouver Rays sounds so much better than the New Jersey Rays.......(Montreal had their chance), I remember when the FLORIDA MARLINS and the COLORADO ROCKIES joined MLB, I thought P U, the two worst names that they could be. For many years the Denver Bears was a popular tripple A team,(a very good MLB name), we'll since then Florida switched to Miami, the Colorado Rockies along with Arizona Diamondbacks stink up the image of the NL west IMO. Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers sound OK.

On one hand you like Denver Bears but on the other hate Marlins? Miami Marlins is South Florida's old historical baseball nickname going back over half a century.

kirk , what happened when The A,s transferred their territorial rights (to San Jose ) to the Giants . They did this when San Fran built AT&T park . Did they sell San Jose for huge $$$ or WTF did they do . Lets face it the A,s brought this on themselves .

As For the Rays . They would move to New York in a heartbeat if they could but it won't happen even though New York area could better support 3 teams than tampa support 1

The Oakland A's are also defendants in this suit. It is San Jose suing. Clearly the A's are hoping that MLB and the city cut a deal out of court though. This is the likely outcome and Sternberg and his Rays will still be screwed.

But to answer your question, the A's got nothing. In 1990 San Jose was handed to the Giants in an agreement to create territorial rights. This was done because the Giants were looking at moving there and were desperate to get out of Candlestick. The A's owner at the time did what was best for baseball. He was also friends with the Giants owner. The entire deal was a kindness of heart and for the better of the game thing. In today's business world that is hard to imagine but that's how it went down.

The Giants never moved to San Jose and this was never an issue until the A's wanted to relocate and the Giants said, "Hang on a minute here."

Just to add-- if 23 of 30 owners vote to take away the Giants rights to the territory, the A's can just move. A vote has not been called for because Athletics ownership don't think they have the votes. This voting process could work for the Rays in the future. There has to be a few owners out there who wouldn't mind seeing the spending power of the Yankees and Mets cut into.

Sternberg might be able to get 23 votes. He'd have at least 1 from Oakland but lose 1 from San Francisco. He could probably also count on Toronto, Boston, Baltimore, Atlanta, Miami, Washington, and his own vote. Philly would be on the fence. That's 8 yes, 3 no, a big maybe and 18 question marks.

I think the biggest question in all of this is "If the Rays move from St. Petersburg, will anyone in St. Petersburg notice?"

Is there anyone left in St. Pete's with a job? How about cable? Not many!

The solution? CUT FOOD STAMPS! If poor people wanted to eat, they should have thought of that before they became poor! /aynrand

I believe that in Florida you now have to have kids to get food stamps. You need to pass a drug test to get welfare. Unemployment is over 12% and in St. Pete's it's around 15%.

I don't know much about law, so it will be interesting to see what happens. San Jose was so confident of getting the A's that they went and built a brand new stadium for the A's to play in. The problem is greed on the San Frans peoples, (city council etc), BTW over the past ten years San Jose has become the second largest city in California, after LA, San Diego is third now, and SF who for so many years was # 2 in California has become # 4th largest city in California. So you can see why they want to keep the San Jose market. But Oakland has been talking about moving off and on for 40 years, if the courts decide in favor of the Giants, Oakland should move to Akron or Vancouver. Bud Selig said there will not be any more expansion for over 20 years. So who else but those rich people in Montreal who wants to bring a team back to Montreal, again, who else in the USA can give them compitition, Akron, but then the Cleveland Indians will cry FOUL BALL. I think the A's is Montreals best chance. But that would create 6 teams in the AL East, so Toronto would have to move to the NL........theres more but I like the sound of the Blue Jays being in the NL East. The Braves could be moved to another division, or....... another NL team joining the AL, the Nats back to the AL and setting up a rivalry with Baltimore....only 30 miles away from Washington.
