Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Is anyone still expecting this guy to be a relevant major-leaguer again? Not relevant, but maybe a junk SP we use for mopping up games when injuries hit. I do hope I am wrong though and he comes back and is a solid back of the rotation SP for us for a while.
dmrich28 Verified Member Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I'm sure this past start cost him another 4 or 5 attempts minimum. He won't be anywhere near the majors this year. Can't afford to use him as another experiment if they are going to try and be serious for any kind of playoff run later. Wait till next spring and see...unlesss of course the team flops and has no shot come September
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I was at the game tonight, right behind home plate. I hate to say it but Romero was even worse than his line score indicated. When he missed, he missed badly. And he also had a baserunner picked off at first and two thrown out at the plate (one of which was the wrong call). Gose?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Yeah. He was still taking his swings, but would turn around and make a silly face for a picture or acknowledge a fan who was calling his name. Reyes is the bomb. Kawa-who???

JugglingPitches Verified Member Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Pretty sure Romero is done. But I also thought that about Lind and I was wrong about him (so far anyway).
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Pretty sure Romero is done. But I also thought that about Lind and I was wrong about him (so far anyway). It wouldn't be so painful if we weren't now paying him 7.5M a year to pitch for the Bisons. If he were a cheap contract you'd let him go and see if he ever gets it together. But the $$$ are such a waste and might prevent you from signing or extending someone else. And it's all wasted if he never has a positive impact on the big league club again.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 For the record, I'm not blaming JPR for signing that contract. At the time it made all the sense in the world. Any GM would have done the same.

I thought the salary dipped if you weren't in the big leagues but I guess it depends on what type of contract he signed. Either way...hugely disappointing. To go from ace to the weak link on the AAA staff is a tough fall. I have to say though, he was very entitled and was a sour puss when he didn't make the team out of Spring Training. He's done nothing to prove management wrong thus far. Probably good for him to be eating some humble pie, and who knows...maybe he'll put it together and not take it for granted this time. Really hope he does.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I know you can do this with any draft, but it's more interesting and prescient since JP Ricciardi has actually said he regretted drafting Ricky. Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I think the Mariners are probably angrier than the Jays are about that draft...

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I think the Mariners are probably angrier than the Jays are about that draft... Why? Cause they could have chosen among like 4 franchise cornerstone players instead of a guy who no longer even plays baseball?

oakville69 Verified Member Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Pretty sure Romero is done. But I also thought that about Lind and I was wrong about him (so far anyway). I disagree. The Jays have numerous examples of players that have been DFA'd & come back better. Lind & Edwin were both DFA'd. Bautista was a nobody in 2008. Cecil was demoted to the minors last year. Romero could be a emergency starter later this year.

Romero could be a legitimate callup if JJ continues on and off the DL or in Wang has bad outings.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Even if Romero never pitches for us again, he still was solid here for us 3 years. Just by going off common sense, thats above average for a top 10 draft pick.
oakville69 Verified Member Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Romero could be a legitimate callup if JJ continues on and off the DL or in Wang has bad outings. Agreed. Josh Johnson, Wang & even Rogers could end up blowing up. We will probably need Romero,Morrow & Happ this year. Could Hutch or Drabek be ready by September?

And... Tulo...
Metallijay Verified Member Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 What a huge boost it would be to have romero to come back and pitch like the all star he was....Doubtfull but would make this rotation a lot better,

Hutch? Romero? Morrow? We flounder and stay out of contention unless someone steps up. The rotation is inadequate as it is.

Totally agree, hopefully morrow can come back too but I don't have much faith in him, that or a trade but with all the teams looking for pitching I just think the jays will get outbid.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 30, 2013 Posted June 30, 2013 Didn't AA give Romero his extension? Not sure. But Ricciardi drafted him obviously, and publicly stated that he wished he hadn't. How's that supposed to affect a player? You should never say that.
