How is PAs calculated?

I have been to the baseball-reference site where they have this information but it does not make sense to me. I am hoping someone who has this knowledge will be able to clarify the issue I am having in my mind. I am not suggesting their information is incorrect however I cannot seem to reconcile with their numbers. Does PAs only include ABs+BB+IBB+SH+SF or does it include more or less?

"Plate appearances" is simple. It literally means how many times the batter has come to the plate, no matter the result that ensues.

 

Edit (one exception) : If an inning ends, while batter is up, from a runner getting out (picked off, caught stealing, etc) then that won't count as a PA. The plate appearance has to "finish" (ie. hit, strikeout, walk, ground or fly out, sac fly, etc etc etc) to count.

IBB's are included in BB so remove that. Then include HBP and Reached by Defensive Interference and you have your PA's.

When I removed the IBBs from the total it agreed with their PAs - Didn't know the BBs included the IBBs. Thanks.

An interesting quirk, Tyler Colvin leads the league in this the past couple years an it isn't even close.
