IBTrini Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I have been to the baseball-reference site where they have this information but it does not make sense to me. I am hoping someone who has this knowledge will be able to clarify the issue I am having in my mind. I am not suggesting their information is incorrect however I cannot seem to reconcile with their numbers. Does PAs only include ABs+BB+IBB+SH+SF or does it include more or less? G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 "Plate appearances" is simple. It literally means how many times the batter has come to the plate, no matter the result that ensues. Edit (one exception) : If an inning ends, while batter is up, from a runner getting out (picked off, caught stealing, etc) then that won't count as a PA. The plate appearance has to "finish" (ie. hit, strikeout, walk, ground or fly out, sac fly, etc etc etc) to count. It's calculating what are considered "at bats" that's complicated
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Does PAs only include ABs+BB+IBB+SH+SF or does it include more or less? IBB's are included in BB so remove that. Then include HBP and Reached by Defensive Interference and you have your PA's.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_appearance PA = AB + BB + HBP + SH + SF + Times Reached on Defensive Interference
IBTrini Verified Member Posted June 10, 2013 Author Posted June 10, 2013 (edited) IBB's are included in BB so remove that. Then include HBP and Reached by Defensive Interference and you have your PA's. When I removed the IBBs from the total it agreed with their PAs - Didn't know the BBs included the IBBs. Thanks. Edited June 10, 2013 by IBTrini I was using HBP just missed adding it in the original post.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 Reached by Defensive Interference An interesting quirk, Tyler Colvin leads the league in this the past couple years an it isn't even close. Edit: Or I may be thinking of catcher interference lol.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
