oakville69 Verified Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I was watching Blue Jays Central today, & it seems like Dirk is going out of his way to needle Gregg Zaun. He argued with Zaun about whether or not Lawrie ejection was warranted last night. Zaun agreed with the ejection. He then tried to explain advanced baseball stats of run expectancy of bunting, but then halted the discussion by saying that Gregg zaun's head would explode at any talk of advanced stats. Luckily, Jamie Campbell was there to prevent Zaun from punching Hayhurst. Zaun lifted his hands on 2 occasions as mock disgust. Zaun also said there was no rum in his coke. Does anyone think Hayhurst is purposely trying to needle Zaun for better tv ratings or does Hayhurst have a fundamental disagreement with Zaun over many issues? I like Hayhurst & his insights into baseball.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Important to remember that Zaun was probably the guy who gave Hayhurst s*** for writing his book. Dirk likes to talk about advanced stats, but doesn't really know or apply them very well. I think he does disagree with Zaun on most things, and Zaun is naturally an idiot, but part of him probably enjoys needling him.
Metallijay Verified Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I love it, probably more entertaining then the Jays at this point.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 It's definitely a natural disagreement. You can tell that Dirk has only recently immersed himself into the world of sensible baseball statistics, but that's fine. He's getting better. I really like having him on the airwaves, the pregame and that Baseball Central thing. I don't think it really perturbs Zaun either. He's the competitive jock type, so he probably likes to argue on the air, and in his mind he's always right so it doesn't really matter what Dirk says.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 I don't really care if Hayhurst improperly cites advanced stats right now, because he seems like he's at least trying to get them right, and that in itself is eons better than citing f***ing RBIs or whatever Zaun's version of Runs Created was.

Well Zaun used to do more of that too, but his amount of criticism has dropped precipitously compared to least season, even though the team is worse.

I think he just stopped caring to be honest. He's probably just as jaded as most of us by this point.

This is very true. He was opposed to the Jays bringing up Sean Nolin on Baseball central on Friday morning. & he was right, but he had to backtrack on sportsnet.ca later yesterday before the game. Dirk has a unique perspective on baseball given his minor league career & short stint in the majors. He is a pro Tampa Bay Rays fan & loves how they develop their pitching prospects. I wonder how long Rogers will keep him if he continues to point out weaknesses in AA's philosophy.

Zaun had to keep a low profile after bashing AA last year & saying the prospects weren't being disciplined enough. He also got into trouble for his comments about ugly obese women at Hemingway's bar in Toronto. http://deadspin.com/5969819/gregg-zaun-is-tired-of-seeing-all-these-fat-chicks-in-toronto Edited May 25, 2013 by oakville69 added link
