Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 JPA doesn't compete with anyone, he's already a winner. legend in his own lunch time. Time is an illusion, lunch time, doubly so... /HHGTTG
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Yeah, when some players are back in the mix it will be different. I just meant for now, hitting JPA 5th really isn't terrible managing.. it's an indictment of the current state of the lineup.
Clownthopoulos Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 since we traded d'arnaud its OBVIOUS that AA has faith in JPA he wont let his ego be bruised and demote him, AA knows that he has no catcher now that he traded travis better get use to JPA folks cause unless AA gets canned we aint seeing someone else
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 A sub .250 OBP shouldn't be anywhere near the lineup. Unfortunately you have Lawrie, Boni, and Izzy sitting there too.... Kawa and his .280 SLG only makes sense at the #9 hole. Only Rasmus would be his comp with the band of misfits in the lineup the last few days.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I'm sick of hearing about OBP, can't understand why people think it's the be all end all of stats
Clownthopoulos Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 i still think JP is a great catcher offensively how many catchers can hit 30 home runs in a year?
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I'm sick of hearing about OBP, can't understand why people think it's the be all end all of stats Because if you are getting on base, you are not making outs.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I'm sick of hearing about OBP, can't understand why people think it's the be all end all of stats Would you prefer to hear about his sub .300 wOBA, .225 BA, 55-2 K:BB or 0.2 WAR (through 46 games) instead?
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Would you prefer to hear about his sub .300 wOBA, .225 BA, 55-2 K:BB or 0.2 WAR (through 46 games) instead? I'd prefer to hear about what better option we have than Arencibia
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Your really really dumn. You wrote that already, tell me what other option we have than Arencibia
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Is this a real life post? Who else would you play?
bzapple Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I really thought JPA might draw a walk against Strop there. My heart was racing.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Obviously Josh Thole. But even if Thole didn't exist, lack of an in house replacement is a stupid justification for playing for him. He's about as good a catcher as Munenori Kawasaki is a shortstop. That is to say, he's replacement-level, maybe a touch above. If as an organization you can't come up with better than replacement-level talent, you're doing it wrong. Last offseason alone we watched as David Ross and Russell Martin signed elsewhere - both are huge upgrades on Arencibia. The guy who hit .234, 1 HR in the NL last year? That guy? He didn't win a gold glove - if you were a GM, would you trade Arencibia for Thole?
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Thole plays slightly better D (doesn't throw real well), hit for about the same average and a OBP maybe under .300. I'll take the clutch hitting, higher HR and RBI totals.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I will hop on the troll side and say if Thole is going to come up and put up .230/.290/.320 or something.. I would rather stick with JPA. Need the xbh in the lineup.. even if he moves to the back end of the lineup.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Thole only had 27 BB last year, I consider a HR the equivalent of 4 walks
IronLadle Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 lol A walk is only one base a HR is 4 bases
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Well.. I guess ideally I'd like to see him come up as the 2nd C and show 2012 was a thing of the past before taking JPA out of the picture.
Nox Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Thole only had 27 BB last year, I consider a HR the equivalent of 4 walks oh my
sachmo55 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Thole's career wOBA is 0.295, and Steamer has him at 0.302. If he's going to be in that range he's easily better than JP. Serious question would be, who would be the backup to hit lefties?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 the ceeb with 4 rbi's tonight hatters gonna hat
sachmo55 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Thole only had 27 BB last year, I consider a HR the equivalent of 4 walks 2.978
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Thole only had 27 BB last year, I consider a HR the equivalent of 4 walks What is this sorcery?
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 2.978 Where did you get that number? I got 2.708
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Ideally we don't rely on him at all because we have a valid starter. But a platoon between JPA and Thole is the best way to use the players we do have. Yeah, an upgrade a C would have been good.. but I mean really, when you have a $120m team that goes bust, the worse move they made wasn't sticking with a C somewhere between a starter and replacement level who makes $500k/year. He cant be Public Enemy #1
sachmo55 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Where did you get that number? I got 2.708 I have no idea if I did it right I took fangraph's wOBA values for walks and HR's: 0.691 & 2.058 2.058/0.691 = 2.978
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Yeah, an upgrade a C would have been good.. but I mean really, when you have a $120m team that goes bust, the worse move they made wasn't sticking with a C somewhere between a starter and replacement level who makes $500k/year. He cant be Public Enemy #1 Well yeah the starting pitching is the main problem and they should all be ashamed of their performance so far but the JPA/Rasmus/Lawrie/Bonafacio axis of underachievement aren't exactly helping things much.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I have no idea if I did it right I took fangraph's wOBA values for walks and HR's: 0.691 & 2.058 2.058/0.691 = 2.978 Oh okay yeah we just used slightly different wOBA values. I figured that was the case since our numbers were pretty similar.
