SpeedyGose Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 In 399 plate appearances last season, Bautista had 59 walks. That's one more than Arencibia has had in his entire MLB career, spanning 1058 plate appearances. JPs response "So i dont walk as much as one of the best in the bigs #getadayjobloser"
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Gausman pretty much walks no one, but I'm at the game and it seems like every time I am, JPA makes me look foolish (this year's opener being the exception). So I'm going to predict a walk tonight.

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 I'm interested to see who has a worse walk rate at the end of the season: Arencibia or Salvador Perez. Perez's walk rate has dropped from 4.4% in 2011 to 3.9% in 2012 to 2.0% this season. Unlike Arencibia, however, he actually can hit for average, so his OBP isn't horrendous. And Perez actually knows how to catch.

"he sperr it wong, you no wok. lol "
kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 And Perez actually knows how to catch. Quite true. He's the kind of catcher with a poor walk rate that you can actually live with.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 And Perez actually knows how to catch. There is lots to be concerned with Perez so far this year though. His contact rates are way down and with his inability to take a walk his contact rates carried him and he's been having troubles relaying the signs as coaching staff has complained about him calling incorrect pitches. He's sell high candidate for KC.
JohnnyLonghorn Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Lol both are horrendous but at least Perez Ks at half the rate and provides you stellar defence to boot. Defence >>> HRs for the most important defensive player on the field. Yesterday on the Fan590 they were saying Molina saved the Rays something like 100+ runs last year on his defence alone, mostly attributed to his exceptional pitch framing abilities.

I'd love for JPA to hit Homerz. start with the 2 Homerz in the booth so that we wouldn't have to live with Buck and Tabler. no way they survive a JPA swing unless they make themselves look like ball four off the plate. we all know that's a swing and a miss.

I wonder if JPA and Janssen are having a competition to see who can post the highest k/bb ratio. So far JPA is winning. He's a winner at everything

In 89 plate appearance, AL pitchers have walked twice (same as JPA in 163 ABs) NL pitchers are walking in 3% of their plate appearances and barely striking out more than JPA (36.3% vs 33.7%) How is this even possible?

Bamptonio Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Let's say it's been exactly 1 month since JPA walked last. That means that 9 861 547 people have been born and 3 506 328 people have died since JPA was able to watch 4 balls go by in a single plate appearance. Here's another one: The Blue Jays have 1711 PA's, 350 K's, and 140 BB's. JPA has 163, 55, and 2 respectively. Math tells us that he has 9.5% of the PA's, 15% of the K's, and 1.4% of the walks. Basically he has about 160% of the K's and 15% of the walks he should have based on the amount of PA's he's seen relative to the team. Brutal.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 The funny thing is, he must of had 20 or so counts where he had 3 balls. He's had TWENTY SIX three ball counts and TWO walks. I don't even know how that's possible unless you're actually TRYING not to walk...which I think is actually the case. IMO, JP is trying to stick it to the man and stat geeks (who don't understand the game) everywhere by refusing to walk. He's basically a 27 year old child. As a comparison, Vernon Wells has a fairly average walk rate. He's had 26 three ball counts and walked 14 times.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Even more bizarre, in those 26 PAs where he has accrued three balls, his line is .125/.192/.208. More evidence that he's simply determined to not take a walk.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 A couple games ago he had a 3-0 count. I thought we were finally going to see a walk. He battled back, lengthened his swing, and eventually was able to strike out. It was a close call.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 The fact shouldn't be lost that the Jays suck so bad that you really have no choice but bat him 5th some nights as GOD AWFUL (and he is bad) as he is. Gose Bats Edwin Lind JPA Lawrie Rasmus Izzy Kawa I mean, Rasmus has the better stick and gets on base more but he's a K machine himself and so is it worth hitting 2 LHB in a row (if Lind 4th, Rasmus 5th)?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Melky Bautista Rasmus Edwin Lind Lawrie JPA Kamikaze Izzy that's probably what I'd like.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Never has a player in the history of baseball struck out more than 100 times and walked less than 10 times in a single season. Could this clown actually accomplish this? Pull the plug already and call up Thole. Thole leaves a lot to be desired defensively as well but no one can be worse than JPA at this point. At least Thole can draw a walk.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Melky Bautista Rasmus Edwin Lind Lawrie JPA Kamikaze Izzy that's probably what I'd like. Maybe. I'm not a big Rasmus guy though. He's inching towards his .225/.290/.400 mean. Not a place for a #3 guy
