April 6 Jeremy Jeffress designated for assignment after pitching ONE inning on April 5.

April 8 Dave Bush designated for assignment after pitching THREE innings on April 7.

April 12 Dave Bush designated for assignment after pitching a total of THREE and a THIRD innings on April 9-11.

April 27th Aaron Laffey designated for assignment after pitching TWO and TWO-THIRDS innings on April 26th.

April 28th Brad Lincoln optioned to Buffalo, after pitching a total of TWO innings on April 25-26.

May 3rd Justin Germano designated for assignment after pitching TWO innings on May 1st.

May 9th Edgar Gonzalez designated for assignment after pitching FOUR and a THIRD on May 8th.

The consistent pattern that we are seeing, is relief pitchers coming up, getting one opportunity, and then getting demoted, if it's a poor outing.

Now, in some instances, it was the right decision, but the frequent DFA'ing following a single poor outing means that either:

A) The Blue Jays management is giving up too early on their relief pitchers.

B) The Blue Jays lack the assessment tools to determine whether or not a player is ready to come up to MLB.

But there's a bigger problem, than occasionally losing out on a guy who could be marginally useful.

Imagine you have a high-pressure sales job, and that the number of sales you make isn't always under your direct control.

Now imagine that you have a boss looking over your shoulder, who's going to fire you if you don't make a sale in the first thirty minutes.

Does this create a comfortable working environment that puts you at ease, and lets you focus on the task at hand?

Probably not.

We need to give these fringe relievers their best opportunity to succeed and that means, when we decide to bring a guy up, we tell him either:

a) You're here only to fill in, until X player comes back.

or

B) You're here for two weeks, regardless of your success. After that we'll re-evaluate.

No more of this: "You messed up. You're fired."

AA acts like he's a Greek restaurant owner firing every waitress that breaks a plate.

I'll let greater minds pick apart the moves but the Jays starting pitching can barely go 5 innings and they're throwing the most pitches in the league. It's like an assembly line of pitchers . Hasn't our bullpen been the one bright spot?

This has nothing to do with being reactionary or giving up on guys too early. These pitchers would have been sent down again even if they threw 5 no-hit innings. We have 2 starters on the DL and two more that probably should be, and basically no one is going deep into the game. This is simply trying to prevent the entire pen from going on the DL too from being overworked. We haven't risked losing anyone that remotely matters in these moves (with the possible exception of Jeffress, and we got away with with that). Laffey would be nice right now, but there wasn't room to carry him at the time.

The only thing I don't like about these moves are if it causes bad feelings by the players towards the organization. If they were signed or picked up and told that this is likely what would happen, then there's no issue at all.

Moves like these started since last year, the Happ deal, the Snider deal, Thames deal (not saying they were really bad) those looked like indicators to AA panicking, now the same thing is happening...on a much more radical scale.

when you don't have players with options, signing and DFA'ing a series of vets can be a very effective tool to save your pen. However when you do it after they pitch such short outings it just doesn't work. Edgar Gonzalez couldn't go again for at least 5 days anyway so I didn't mind how he was used (however having to come in without being ready sucks for a guy that has been starting). Honestly I would have kept him out there until he went 6 innings at least. That's how you use a vet and DFA. Not like how some were used. It's almost like he built the team, looked at the starting roster and said "okay" I'm done here. I know I've been repetitive on the roster management stuff but AA is useless at it.

and having several pitchers with options is a way to turn a 12 man pitching staff into 14 or 15 if used properly. I suppose having so many injuries makes it less manageable too.
