Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I'm out of that game! I have 3 elite hitting prospects and I intend to keep them all. Guerrero, Devers and Torres are all mashing to start the season and at this point I'd probably consider them all untouchable. Take notes. Out of curiosity, have you ever said this and actually ended up keeping those guys?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Thats why I come to you for advise Boxy. I'm good at 1B tho, off-season grabs of Carlos Santana and Jose Abreu, with Rowdy on the farm. Literally just grabbed Rhys because I thought he had a chance to vastly improve his value if he kept hitting outside of Reading. Somehow missed those even though Abreu suxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Out of curiosity, have you ever said this and actually ended up keeping those guys? Ok I totally understand you not giving me the benefit of the doubt, but in non-DDL leagues, yes. I kept Mazara in BORED, I kept Jose Fernandez in FC. I intended to keep Contreras in DDL but I couldn't resist acquiring Andrew Miller. I do tend to keep the ones I view as elite unless an opportunity to acquire an elite MLBer arises. I don't always intend to trade these guys, it's just that I have a serious addiction to trading and a predilection for mortgaging the future for the present. I think each team I manage is within a certain paradigm of contention and I don't manage all my teams the same way. If I own an elite contender, chances are I'm going to try to keep augmenting the core to stay as good as possible throughout the prime of my elite core players. I don't have a problem tearing a team down and rebuilding completely, it just hasn't happened yet in DDL.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I know, was just busting your balls. In other news, I have a pretty decent offer in hand for Moustakas so get yer bids in. I'll be moving him probably tomorrow-ish.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I would bid on Moose but I don't have the pitching depth to trade. I don't even really have a 6th starter.

You need more pitching. What is the right number of starters though? I could run a 9-man rotation out if i really wanted to.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 7 or 8 SP is ideal, 6 RP, and 2-3 bench bats for versatility. overkill IMO. I think 5-6 max is good. If you are running 8 SP, chances are your last guy is doing more harm than good unless you're Silverdumn or something. I'd rather have a better bat or two with 5-6 SP.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 11, 2017 Author Posted April 11, 2017 The real answer is that it depends how good your SP/RP are.

It's good to have volume, but you don't always have to use it. I tend to like to get 1 or 2 aces, an elite bullpen, and then just patch together the rest of the rotation and pick up mid rotation arms when I can. They usually become available throughout the season.

BTS Community Moderator Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 oh has it? Yeah, I'm usually near the top of 20-team leagues in pitching. My biggest problem has been investing in the wrong bats.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 oh has it? I was gonna say. When 10th place seems to be a goal, I can see how he feels that way.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I've always been a fan of the army of SP approach, but starting to think Dinger might be right about an extra bench RP. Most days you have at least one RP not playing, so I think there's good utility in carrying 6 (assuming they're helpful). It also helps if you have a split between SV guys and HLD guys, so when the weekend comes you can play to the categories that are still undecided.

Or do you mean a reliever who has pitched two days in a row?
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 11, 2017 Author Posted April 11, 2017 I also like rostering a 6th RP every year, as long as they have that sweet sweet SP eligibility.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Most days = Monday and Thursday? Or do you mean a reliever who has pitched two days in a row? All of the above. It's pretty easy to check which RPs have gone two days in a row, and unless they're Andrew Miller, they probably won't go 3.

Brad Hand was a deep fantasy godsend last year. Edwin Diaz and Colome also. This year it looks like Raisel Iglesias and maybe Archie Bradley.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I'm still holding out hope for Joe Kelly... but its not looking good
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Tyler Duffey too possibly. +Nicasio. Both those guys probably suck tho. That said, Brad Hand sucked as a starter... so maybe?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Actually Nicasio could be a good RP, I take it back.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Actually Nicasio could be a good RP, I take it back. 12.13 K/9, 3.23 BB/9, 3.03 xFIP in 55.2 IP last year in relief.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 There's not much utility in carrying 7 RPs tho Anybody wanna trade a SP for Koda Glover, Joe Jimenez, or Kevin Siegrist?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 All of the above. It's pretty easy to check which RPs have gone two days in a row, and unless they're Andrew Miller, they probably won't go 3. I do this all the time.
