Don't trade a position player, relievers are near free now!!! - BTS

Yeah but Betances isn't really a reliever, he's a weapon

But David Robertson isn't.

Robertson is no Betances, but he's obviously good. My issue was that a top-25 hitting prospect, another top-100 hitting prospect, and a 2nd round pick is huge value for him in the offseason. I could barely get a top-25 prospect during the season for him.

I didn't get a nibble on Familia all season. I offered him to jaysblue for Mike Fiers and was rejected.

That seems like a bad reject for him.

At the time, Familia was a new closer and a recent jaysblue waiver draft cut. He didn't want to admit his mistake and trade for a closer, even though his bullpen sucked. Now that Familia is established as an elite closer, I wouldn't even consider that trade.

i don't really understand why the Cards are paying Gyorko $33M. 2B, 3B, and SS are already spoken for.

They seem really keen to spend money this year. Sudden, unexplained change in m.o.

Boxy, BP snubbed Blackburn from their Giants Top 10. Please send them a strongly worded email.

Also, I found your next crush:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/card/images/headshot_106898.jpg7. Christopher Shaw, 1B

DOB: 10/20/1993

Height/Weight: 6’4” 260 lbs.

Bats/Throws: L/R

Drafted/Acquired/Bonus: Drafted 31st overall in the 2015 MLB Draft, Boston College; signed for $1.4 million

Previous Ranking(s): No. 46 on top 125 MLB Draft prospects

2015 Stats: .287/.360/.551, 12 HR in 200 plate appearances at short-season Salem-Keizer

Future Tools: 60 power, 50 hit

Role: 45—fringe-average regular at first/bench bat

If you’re looking for power from the left side, Shaw is your man. He’s massive, and his natural strength and ability to transfer that weight allows him to take the ball out to any part of the field. He’s not just a power hitter, though, as he shows patience at the plate, routinely working counts into his favor or drawing walks. The swing can get violent with added length and there’s plenty of swing-and-miss, so he’ll pile up strikeouts.

Shaw played both the outfield and first base at Boston College, but don’t let that fool you; he’s a 20 runner who has no chance of being a professional outfielder (though he does have an above-average throwing arm). That puts a lot of pressure on his bat, and ultimately this is a player who profiles best as either a platoon first baseman/DH or a weapon off the bench.

Bret Sayre’s Fantasy Take: There’s enough potential with the bat here to take Shaw in the first three rounds of dynasty drafts over the next few months, but he’s likely a better bet in on-base leagues than batting average ones. The big lefty could be a .260 hitter with 25-plus homers in time, but let’s wait until he gets to full season ball to get too interested here.

Major League ETA: 2018

Public opinion - is Alex Gordon a significantly better asset than Betances, marginally better, or about the same?

BP is so dumn

I no longer trust their lists and opinions. Still wildly useful for raw scouting data though. The eyewitness reports are great.

Are we talking real life or DDL? In DDL, I'd take Betances by a wide margin.

All of their good prospect guys get poached in short order. Kinda tough for them to continually backfill and still try to put out quality copy on a daily basis.

Dynasty.

Really? wow.

About the same. Could also depend where he signs this offseason.

I always thought Betances was younger then what he actually is. He'll be 28 at the start of the season.

Absolutely, not even close for me. 30+ year old corner outfielder who is really only a strong contributor in OBP vs a RP who can really push your ratios over the top. Betances + a league average starter like Mike Leake is essentially Clayton Kershaw + ~30 holds. It's not hard to find waiver wire guys like David Peralta who can give you Gordon's production in a given year.

Basically, IMO Gordon is overrated in fantasy because he's a WAR darling and RPs are underrated in fantasy because relievers are considered so fungible. Relievers who put up 130 K seasons are exceptionally rare. Corner OFs who give you a sub-.800 OPS and under 30 HR+SB are common.

Posted

So this Shaw guy gets a 50 hit 60 power, no mention of poor platoon splits but somehow he's a platoon guy because he's slow.

Do these guys think at all before they roll out their favourite catch phrases? What kind of .340 obp 25 homer bat is sitting on someone's bench?

And holy f*** it's f***ing almost 2016 and these neanderthals STILL have no rating for eye/patience.

Didn't you hate my Robertson for Eaton trade?

Yes, but that was mostly because of my misperceptions of Eaton. I had him pegged as a guy with zero HR power and marginal SB ability, based on 2014. I didn't expect him to go 14/18 this year.

So, talent evaluation cookie for you. I just wrongly thought Eaton sucked.

Yes, but it is nigh impossible to find breakout relievers on the cheap

You can find breakout relievers, I just proved that with Familia. However, breakout relievers like Betances don't come along every year. The guy has like 50 more Ks than Chapman over the last two seasons.

Yeah, strictly from pitching 54 more innings with a lower K rate.

I think Betances' usage has to raise significant concerns. He's used and abused like essentially no other RP in baseball.

Meh, he came up as a starter and pitched over 100 innings 3 times in his minor league career. Why should I be so concerned with a reliever who throws 85-90 IP per year rather than an ostensibly durable starter who throws 180-200 IP? The guy is built like a power forward. He is used exactly how an elite reliever should be used.
