BTS Community Moderator Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I can't even be pleased about Belt because concussions aren't coo'. Guy's season could be wiped out because of an errant warmup through. s***** luck is s*****.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Catsass, why you selling? Your team had as good a shot as any non-Dinger team to win the championship if you held your playoff spot. Also, sell me Abreu, Gomez, or Puig plz.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 With Oso Blanco back on the field, rent-a-catcher Saltalamacchia is available. Looking for a holds guy, backup MIF, or pick/prospect. I'm sending out a few such offers.

Not really a sell per se, with him acquiring a workhorse 30-something SP in return. He mitigates the injury risk for Lee and probably gets 3-5 extra seasons out of Shields.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Shields and Lee a straight swap? Yes.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 Was the trade Shields straight up for Lee or is there more? Edit: Answered, thanks. I think I prefer Shields as an overall asset. It's slight though.

It's slight though. Coming into the year I would have taken Lee by a landslide, but elbow injuries are scary and he's probably going to retire at the end of this deal. I can see why a team would prefer Shields if they were less concerned about going all in this year and more concerned with sustaining a winning team for the next few years.

Not just this move, but he's weakened his team a bit in 2014 with recent moves, while improving his long-term picture. I'm happy about it, but IMO he underrated his chances at a title this year and has hurt his odds of winning. Yes. I like what you're doing this year, for both you (this year) and the rest of the league (long term). You've assembled a clear favourite capable of steamrolling everyone in the playoffs, BUT you don't look quite like the juggernaut dynasty you looked like before the season. IMO you've increased your chances this year, while also letting the pack a bit closer going forward. Flags fly forever though.

I consider it jumping ship on Lee before he has career ending TJ Surgery. Shields isn't as good as Lee but I should get a couple more years out of him. I didn't like what I saw from Lee's rehab starts. I've been wrong planty of times though. And Vogelsong was just a guy that i had to move to clear a roster spot.

At least the basement dwellers can take solace in knowing that my core should be in significant decline in the next 2-3 years.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I'm trying to build a team that'll be a contender year after year. Most of my best players are under 30, with a bunch still under 25. My only main roster players over 30 are Shields, Gonzalez, and Hamilton. With Hamilton being the oldest at 33.

At least the basement dwellers can take solace in knowing that my core should be in significant decline in the next 2-3 years. Realistically, you have enough talent in place that there's no reason to miss the playoffs or anything barring horrible luck or mismanagement. You just might not run away from the pack indefinitely.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 And I'd sell Abreu to you for the right price....

Yeah I would have said the same thing too. It seems like there's a fine line with older players' trade value. If a player is elite and dependable enough people will almost regard his age as immaterial. Seems like Lee has recently dipped below that level. Shields is my favourite type of fantasy pitcher. An utter ton of above-average innings year after year from a big guy with smooth mechanics and a deep arsenal. Interestingly, his velocity has increased almost every single year of his career (dip from 2010-2011). I love watching him pitch too. This makes sense for you though, Dinger, because the number of elite innings coming from your rotation made Shields' steady arm a little wasted. Cliff Lee can improve your staff's ratios.

I've really started gravitating towards this type of arm and taking fewer chances on upside guys who can't seem to stay healthy.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I like what Cats is doing long term. Hes being patient and setting himself up for continous competing. That being said, I saw him as the 2nd best team behind dinger and I'm thrilled hes made these moves to weaken his 2014 squad.

I can't recommend this approach enough. It's not even costly to do either because other owners are willing to take those chances and don't regard durability as a super-valuable thing. Your stable of Felix, Kuma, Lester is fantastic.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I'd like to see a lineup card for Dingers team, I'm intrigued now from always hearing about it He has got like 6 or 7 top 100 fantasy assets in his starting lineup. The pitching is pretty darn great too.

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 The logic for Cats behind this Lee-Shields swap is the same as the logic behind me trading Anibal to Dinger for Ryu. In the short term it might be a downgrade, but it could be a pretty big plus long term.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 We've been falling behind too often on processing trades, so I've added Boxy as a co-commissioner on Yahoo, PB, and the Google Doc. Hopefully with four Darrells things will get processed in a more timely fashion once again. Boxy, the only thing to note about the Google Doc is that you have to use keyboard commands to copy, cut, and paste. Right clicking to do that s*** doesn't work for some gay reason. Also, since you are the most nubile Darrell in power you now have to save a backup of the Google Doc to your hard drive every few weeks. Oh, and if you exit the Doc too quickly, sometimes your changes don't take.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2014 Author Posted July 22, 2014 Looks like Cargo is hurt again. Jesus Christ. What a nightmare season.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2014 Posted July 22, 2014 I really wanted Lee, but just couldn't believe in the health, and 12+ mo. for TJS if he does retire after this contract is huge. e: Btw, does anyone know if Vogelsong was injured or just yanked after coughing up 11(!) hits in 3 innings? I built an injury opt-out clause into our deal, heh. I think it was just an off day for him. If it makes you feel better, Lee didn't do any better... 12 hit, 6 earned runs, in 5.2 innings.
