Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I'm increasingly of the opinion that the best strategy in this league is repeatedly consolidating lesser picks/prospects/players into high-end talent. Gather depth, trade it for desirable pieces. Rinse. Repeat. Without a doubt that is the best strategy. Any young prospect will always be overvalued in our league.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Oh yeah, I guess I have a 3rd philosophy (to what BTS said): Always be the 1 in a 2-for-1. This is always my strategy in fantasy. However, it's even more effective in 10-12 team leagues where there's usually some kind of value on waivers.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Without a doubt that is the best strategy. Any young prospect will always be overvalued in our league. Market value on prospects has fluctuated in this league. It has fluctuated throughout the year and I will probably fluctuate from year to year as well. I wouldn't assume they will alway be overvalued. They might be but certainly not always overvalued to the same extent. Some of the trades that happened early in this league's history may never be repeated.

A 2nd Leg to Stanton receives: Matt Holliday Hiroki Kuroda Northof49 Fanclub receives: Pick #16 Carlos Correa
TRM Verified Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I feel like you're going to regret this at some point. Almost certainly.

Gather depth, trade it for desirable pieces. Rinse. Repeat. That's my whole gig lol. I don't plan on ever promoting and sticking with a prospect unless I get into an obvious rebuilding situation. Anything decent I end up with in the June draft will likely be flipped for a dependable starting pitcher.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I feel like you're going to regret this at some point. I think I will regret the Shields trade as soon as mid-season.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I'm in full on prospect hoarding mode. If nothing else they make good currency.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 One of the most rewarding parts of a dynasty league is promoting a prospect to your pro team IMO. I'm very close to experiencing this for the first time. I still might end up dealing Castellanos before I promote him though.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 One of the most rewarding parts of a dynasty league is promoting a prospect to your pro team IMO. I don't know how rewarding it is when you're just doing it because you're out of room. I guess I'll find out soon.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 The biggest issue for me is trading prospects. I have had offers this offseason on guys like Lindor, Alfaro, and Crawford. The thing is I have a hard time trading these guys because I am over valuing them.

And one of the most disappointing things in a dynasty is when you finally accept that a stud prospect you've been dreaming on for 2 years is just a guy.

You just accept that you might be sacrificing the long term and don't dwell at it. It's much harder to move prospects in challenge type trades although those are utlimately more fun, rewarding.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 That's why I'm so glad this is a 20 team league, at least there's a reasonable chance you can use just another guy. Which affords you some patience... One of the things that makes trading prospects tempting is to simply pass on whatever decisions may need to be made about a guy's viability to someone else.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I think I will regret the Shields trade as soon as mid-season. You better... my rotation was/is god awful without Shields.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 So whats up with that Spanky guy these days? Both picks have been pretty drawn out.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 One of the most rewarding parts of a dynasty league is promoting a prospect to your pro team IMO. In the FC league, promoting Shelby Miller and Julio Teheran this season was an amazing feeling. Also promoting Daniel Hudson back in 2010 as well. When you draft your own guy and they make it to the Show, you can't help but cheer. I drafted Miller, Matt Davidson and Daniel Hudson in 2009, and Teheran in 2010.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 26, 2014 Author Posted February 26, 2014 1/4 done in about 6 days. Meh. Would be nice to have a better pace, but what can you do.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I just perused the league, and a couple observations. 1. It is offensive how much better Dingers team is then everyone else. I know the season hasn't started yet, and anything can happen (especially in a H2H playoffs), but he's gotta be the runaway favourite and anything less than a championship would be a disappointment for him. 2. Giving the defending champ a first week matchup with Boxy is either borderline criminal, or the beginning of a hilarious tradition we should continue for the remainder of the existence of the league. 3. Monte Cristo division is abysmal. 4. War Puigs are gonna challenge in the Turkey Bacon Club. Heck of a three horse race shaping up there. Being the whipping boy sucks ass.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Yeah the draft shouldn't take this long.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I get that people are busy with work/school and can't always check the forum or their email, but I can't understand seeing someone online on the ProBoard when they are on the clock, and then they leave without making a pick.

Sometimes people pop onto proboards on their phone from work/school, but it's not as easy on a mobile browser to check Yahoo and see who's available. But yeah, people should realize that we're basically in the 22nd round of a 25 round draft at this point. No need to sleep on a pick, or think about something for more than 10 minutes. Pick your flier and pop him, fellas. Let's go!

At this point, don't we all have 2-3 guys that we're targeting for our next pick?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I would think so. I probably won't have to consult the yahoo database for the remainder of the draft. The Yahoo app has been nicely updated, I'm sure you can get it on just about any smartphone.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I can't believe you've done this. ^ this guy has a very confused erection
