Nah, Gardiner is a chokejob.

 

And keeping JVR and trading for Plekanec were big mistakes. Instead of gaining a 1st and 3rd for JVR, a 2nd is lost for useless Plekanec.

 

A choker is someone who performs admirably during the regular season then f***s it all up when it counts. Gardiner's defensive play has always been a nightmare. He just did what he's always done... Just on a grander scale.

But I will say it was kinda surprising how invisible Matthews was.

 

Matthews was useless. I was not impressed.

 

Marner was fantastic.

Matthews isn't Sidney Crosby. I felt bad for the guy, to see him playing with Brown and Hyman all series.

 

I think he got one shift with Nylander and surprise surprise they both looked great for that shift.

 

Marner looked a bit better but his linemates were just a lot better at hockey.

 

One of the reasons the Bergeron-Marchand-Pastrnak line is so scary is because they are all great.

Oh f*** off Jim. You poison the main forum with your constant build for the future rhetoric now you're doing it here too. The difference being in the NHL you can just say collect draft picks instead of having to come up with prospect trade scenarios.

 

The Leafs were in year one of a 4-5 year window where they have a realistic shot of winning. Last year was a bit of a fluke and they beat expectations so they obviously wanted to build on that. They were early season favourites to win the Cup but in the end the team finished exactly where I would have expected 18 months ago. It's very reasonable for the team to try to build now. They don't need to hoard draft picks which will contribute three years from now, if that.

 

The team is in desperate need of at least one and preferably two lock-down defensemen to be serious Cup contenders. That needs to be priority number one in the off-season and if they have to gut their draft picks to do it, they should do it.

There are excellent d-man prospects on the Marlies. One of them was called up (Dermott) and may be a 1st pairing d-man as soon as next season.

I agree that I'd rather have the Leafs set up than most teams at this point...but hockey has shown time and time again that there is no such thing as a sure thing. If the Leafs totally fell apart next year it wouldn't surprise me any more than them making a run to the finals. Essentially hockey makes zero sense to me.

 

As for Matthews it's about now that I expect the report that he was playing with a broken tibula, fibula, heart and several STI's and the Leaf fans will feel relief.

If it's a dynasty route, it's a pretty stupid and ineffective dynasty route. None of your suggestions about trading good players for picks or prospects make any sense.

He likely was playing injured. He also was keyed on by the Bruins and had Chara up his ass almost every shift. And why Marner had a good series, the Bruins did not key on him / let him have space.

 

Another reason why the Leafs signing Tavares (no loss of draft picks required) in the offseason makes sense. Stanley Cup winners tend to have two elite centremen. Hard to defend against both. They have the cap room - no JVR, no Bozie.

It does. Winnipeg's April is like Nashville's December. I'm a hockey elitist and only cities with fans who suffer through cold winters deserve good hockey teams. No matter how freaking lovable that Nashville crowd is. Plus those jerseys are the ugliest f***ing eyesores since 1980's Pirates uniforms. Yellow does not need to be the dominant colour on a sports jersey with the possible exception of the LA Lakers. Go away Nashville.
