Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2019 Posted April 22, 2019 The Leafs played a good third. Honestly thought they would have tied it. Babcock needs to take some blame for that. He pulls the goalie and Boston scores seconds after. When there's a minute left, you do what you gotta do. With two minutes left, at least wait until your team has full control of the puck in the offensive end before pulling your goalie. As far as the naysayers...stupid. The only relevance to what happens in Boston is what happened last year. Any previous years the roster was entirely different. Well at least for Toronto, not Boston since all their top players are 400 year old dirty bastards who can't get employment with any other NHL team so they are stuck playing with the scummiest team in the league. Logically, I agree completely. Emotionally...it's like being hurt in past relationships...you take that s*** with you. Does it mean your next relationship will fail and you'll get hurt? No...but it's hard to just forget and ignore the hurt and disappointment from the past. Sometimes it's hard to let yourself completely believe and it's easier to expect things to fall apart.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2019 Posted April 22, 2019 I did not see that coming. Hertl with a shorty to win it in double OT to send it to Game 7.

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 So long, Nashville. Washington is going to a game 7 against Carolina. We could quite realistically end up in a scenario where the top seed left after the first round is the New York f***ing Islanders. Lol NHL.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 They will be gone tonight, but I'll give San Jose and Golden State as close enough Thanks Hurl, for saving my crappy bet on the Sharks. Could use another shot of that tonight plus if you guarantee a lock on Boston too.

Okay, I kind of follow. But these playoffs are entertaining, much better than NBA first round. I guess the whole lol thing will be for the finals...GS versus Raps/Giannis/Boston compared to two jobber NHL teams. I have to press this into my memory bank for next year. Bet all the dogs in the first round, indiscriminately. I haven't been nearly aggressive enough. I was looking at CBJ when it was +350 or something and thought to myself damn that's a good price but no way can it happen....can it? The only problem is next year people will probably have a long memory and the best you can get is +200.

Hey, if you want to live in a world where Columbus plays Colorado in the finals, that's your prerogative. I want to see the best teams square off - not a slew of mediocre teams that got hot at the right time. Agreed on the betting. Kicking myself now that I didn't place a few bucks on at least a couple of dogs. Ah well.

The other side to your argument is that everyone has a chance once you get into the playoffs. Is it more or less fun knowing that it doesn't matter, your team is getting crushed in the first round cause they're going up against Golden State, Houston, or Milwaukee? NHL playoffs cater more to the 16 fanbases.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 Am I alone on this? You're not alone. The salary cap has made the level of talent in the NHL extremely flat, and there's so much parity that teams with rosters that are expected to be terrible can actually be elite (see Vegas and the Islanders the last couple of years). It would be like watching baseball and every year there are several 2019 Giants and Blue Jays that win 97 games. If you prefer that success feel like the outcome of years of careful planning and good decisions, and not like something you luck into, the current state of the NHL isn't very fun. When success is easy to obtain, it becomes cheapened, and the cap combined with the absurd standings have cheapened success. Winning in hockey isn't necessarily the outcome of deliberately outcompeting the other 30 front offices over an extended period of time.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 The best teams should've played like the best teams then. I'm on this side. With the sad fact that even with all the randomness, a Canadian team still hasn't won the Cup in something like 86 years. The NHL screwed up in making Vegas far too competitive. It should have introduced Seattle and Vegas at the same time so that the two teams competed with each other for players, rather than giving Vegas free reign to negotiate from a position of power with all 30 teams in the league. But other than that, it's not the NHL's fault that CBJ knocked off Tampa.

The Occam's Razor response to this would be that no NHL FO has been smart enough to figure out how to be a consistent winner in the post-Vegas NHL. There are always loopholes to exploit, especially in a salary cap world, not in spite of it. That, and well, I mean, the Penguins did just go on a pretty nice run. Hawks, Kings too. The World Series winner has been WAY more random this decade than the Stanley Cup winner. Remember the Royals made it that one year? Of course we all do. But this board consistently sucks the dicks of the Rays FO for...reasons. If the MLB had 16 playoff teams instead of 10 it would be even more random especially with one-game-and-done formats. Seriously I don't get the complaint...okay I do, but not in the context of this MLB team board when the data suggests the NHL is better off than baseball when it comes to the best team/front office winning, this fluky year be damned.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 Game 7 vs Boston... Will this be the usual game that casual fans jump off the band wagon and don't follow hockey until April of next year.. Or will this be where the Leaf's get the monkey off their back and keep casual fans into May! Baby steps... Stay tuned sports fans.. Da Da Da Daaaaaaaaaa!
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 Andersen should have held it for the face off.

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Me too Spank. Gotta hand it to the Bruins u know, seems like they always want it worse. Leafs don't have the killer instinct.... And they have Jake Gardiner. -2 so far tonight. Want to see a real team close out a series. Check out the Raptors right now.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 Remember guys, even 3-goal deficits in the 3rd period of game 7 aren't insurmountable. This is far from over.
